Cardinals really need to stop hitting Contreras in the #5 slot.
He had a good couple games so he’s righted the ship and turned things around. I haven’t looked at the P-D site, but I’m sure somebody gushed about it.
June 21, 2023 at 5:02 pm #225239A golden chance in the 7th and nobody can get the ball out of the infield.
A good chance in the 8th and Goldy fists a popup to the SS and Nudie Bar grounds out to 2nd.
Pitiful……..
June 21, 2023 at 5:05 pm #225240True Rat, it is pitiful. Players used to play pepper from a young age right on up. Bat control was second nature.
June 21, 2023 at 5:13 pm #225241You can blame all those, “No Pepper Allowed” signs…Do any of the ballparks have those anymore? I know they were once prominently displayed at Busch Memorial and on countless chain link backstops located at fields where we practiced and played as kids.
June 21, 2023 at 5:15 pm #2252423-0 Nationals as head to the 9th.
You can chalk this one up in the loss column.
We are now nine (9) games behind Cincinnati.
Pitiful
June 21, 2023 at 5:19 pm #225243But, but, but, we righted the shop and turned it around. I guess it ran aground.
June 21, 2023 at 5:23 pm #2252443-0 Nationals the final.
Couldn’t even score one run.
I keep asking the same question – is it the hitting coach??? Or do the players just suck???
June 21, 2023 at 5:24 pm #2252459 games out of the division, 10 games out of the 2nd WC spot.
June 21, 2023 at 5:30 pm #225247Last I checked, they still had those “No pepper” signs at Wrigley, TD. I just arrived back from a grueling day down at the ole’ salt mines and it didn’t appear that I missed much. I think the only exciting drama this afternoon was waiting to see if Rat opted for the fresh organic strawberries or the creamy PF ( that’s “Prairie Farms” to the layman) Brazilian bean vanilla ice cream for lunch? This loss was just a minor blip in the whole scheme of things. This team is poised to do some damage…..
whether it be the Nats, cubbies or Yanks……though the Bronx Bombers are going to be out for a dose of revenge for us royally spanking them 3 consecutive games in St. Louis last year.June 21, 2023 at 5:45 pm #225250See there, Pugs? You can’t even play pepper at Wrigley…No wonder the Cubbies are so lousy.
June 21, 2023 at 5:55 pm #225252Tough to sweep a series, although teams seem to do it to us without a lot of problems.
Nice to win two straight series. We will see if this is the start of better things, or just a poor team being able to take advantage of a couple of other poor teams.
Still think the batting order could be better. I like Noot’s potential more as a get on and scoot around the bases guy than a drive ‘em in guy. And I like Goldy more as a drive ‘em in guy than a get on and have others drive ‘em in guy.
June 21, 2023 at 5:57 pm #225253Oh, and on the pepper skills, my dad taught me pepper as a young kid. Great way to develop eye-hand coordination and working on quick reflexes.
June 21, 2023 at 6:24 pm #225256What are we going to do with Gorman?
He’s pitiful anymore.
Can he be sent to Memphis? Or perhaps to Zimbabwe?
June 21, 2023 at 6:55 pm #225259Can he be sent to Memphis?
I suggested that the other day and got some push back. I guess you can’t send out Babe Ruth. We are in last place, we can live with the automatic out. Its the kind of thing losing teams do.
The announcers were harping on his defense again today. I guess its their job. A lot of middle infield types have a good glove. His left side arm is better than some. But the point is, so what? No hit middle infielders are avaiable every winter.
June 21, 2023 at 7:07 pm #225261I think Gorman has to play and you have to live through the down times. He has a live bat and can really turn on a pitch, but is young and still learning.
Let him get the reps and in time the slumps will be shorter and shorter. With us likely going nowhere in October, this is the time to play the younger, talented guys.

ParticipantI have to agree with bicyclemike. Let him work it out or not. At worst, he might fetch something good in a deal.
June 21, 2023 at 9:17 pm #225271Another disappointing loss against a bad team. Would have been nice to have reeled off 5 in a row and at this point I’m not sure if 4 in row constitutes a winning streak. This team needs at least 7 in a row for me to get excited about anything termed a winning streak and it’s looking more and more like this edition isn’t capable of sustaining something like that.
June 21, 2023 at 11:05 pm #2252734 in a row is fine if it is followed by 1 loss in a row and then some more wins. If we lose the next few we are back where we started. And besides, we are as far behind as ever right now, because other teams have hot streaks too. We have to be hotter than everybody else in the Division. The six game homestand after the London trip is huge, and the teams coming to town are not pushovers.
June 22, 2023 at 2:31 am #225274I just don’t see Gorman as a high average guy. Might be a little dated but for him I think just hitting .250 would be a huge help for him Numbers wise and confidence wise. He also K’s a ton and I don’t think that is really going away either.
At this point he has nothing left to prove in the minors. You might not play him as much now that Noot is back. Unfortunately matchups don’t seem to be helping either but you try and put him in a place to succeed without taking too many AB’s away but I think you need to take a couple days worth for now.
June 22, 2023 at 2:35 am #225275They’ve won 2 series in a row. Right now you take that. However I get worried that when they do lose a series they’ll get back in a funk. They need to reverse that a bit.
Starters and bullpen really need to hunker down. It’s too inconsistent at this point to say you’ll get 3 straight quality starts in a row followed by 3 good showings from the pen . I mean today you had a good showing from the starters and pen. It can’t always be about them. In a game like today you need to scratch together a couple runs and they couldn’t do it.
June 22, 2023 at 3:23 am #225276Well, I wake up this morning to find the Cardinals’ bubble has burst. Reality has returned.
It’s really, really hard to win baseball games if you don’t score any runs. It must be Marmol’s fault!
June 22, 2023 at 5:27 am #225278It’s hard to score runs and win baseball games when your best hitter isn’t in the lineup. But I guess 12 games under .500 means a day off is ok for a young player. He needed a nap.
