An anomaly in today’s box score. Their pitcher Sims is credited with 2 earned runs against, but our batters are only credited with 1 RBI.
If the WP had been scored a PB, would it still be an earned run against the pitcher without a corresponding RBI?
No, I don’t believe so BB. A PB is essentially an error on the catcher so no run would have been earned.
I see that Libby pitches tomorrow. I guess that explains why he didn’t relieve yesterday. So glad we got the win today with positional starters being able to rest.
No ER charged to the pitcher if the run scored as a direct result of a PB. A run scored as a result of a WP is charged to the pitcher as an ER. However it’s my understanding, and I could very well be wrong, that if there’s some question to if the run would have scored even without the presence of a PB, the scorer can make his own judgement after he goes back over the entire half inning and determines the run would have scored anyway without the presense of the PB and charge the pitcher with an ER. Now, I’m really confused…Haha!
Good to see Mikolas getting better. Weaver can be real good at times, as he had some good starts with Arizona as well. But he is frustratingly inconsistent.
Glad Libby is getting another start.
I hadn’t kept up with Weaver since he’s been gone, but I checked before today’s game and it looked like other than his first season with AZ. he’s been getting pounded, Bikemike. He looked good today, but he really didn’t have too many dangerous hitters to face. Fortunate to get the W with that line-up.
I mentioned this when it occured, but it looked like Donovan was as frustrated by the lackluster sort of performance by Yepez in LF as a lot of people on here are. He didn’t look too happy on that 9th inning RBI base hit from Fairchild.
Yepez and Burly have both been kind of unimpressive in the field, but I don’t think Burly has ever looked like he was unwilling to hustle or have his head in the game. Somebody will be first to go when guys start coming back.
While Burleson certainly isn’t the picture of sleek and swift out there in LF, I haven’t noticed him looking anywhere too near to remarkably bad in the OF. My primary concern with him right now is his bat. For a short stretch he seemed like he was going to gain a genuine foothold and then he tapered back off. And yeah, I’ve never seen a glimpse of a lack of hustle from him. In any event, Donovan seemed to make it entirely clear that he feels that in a 1 run game in the 9th inning, the LF’er should have no problem remembering where to throw the baseball.
They don’t have that game winning RBI stat anymore and I think that’s a shame. But if they did, I’d have to guess that Gorman would be close to the top in the NL this season. I remember K. Hernandez used to be at or near the top in that category quite a bit.
Yepez is just so nonchalant about everything these days. He just doesn’t need to play the field except maybe 1B. He’s so frustrating to watch.
Burleson does try hard. He takes decent routes. He makes the right throws to bases. He is just slow. And a little awkward. That makes him kind of bad but not unplayable if he could hit well. I am fairly confident that he will learn to hit well. He does a lot of things right. He just needs to keep learning which he can’t do if he never plays. So I’m ok with his occasional starts in LF. It probably hurts us in the short run but might make him and us better in the long run. So I’m ok with being patient with him. But Yepez really is unplayable in the outfield. His range is so limited and he makes lots of poor decisions in his routes.
Yeah, the only item Yepez brings is occasional power. I’ll also say that he can also wade through quite a few PA’s in which he looks really bad in the box, so I don’t feel he provides the potential to generate enough offensive production to have him around simply as a RH option at DH.
I have noticed Mercado look very nonchalant with some catches. I didn’t see his error the other day so can’t speak to that. It catches up with you.
Good thing for Oli that we won with that lineup. He’d be getting torched for 5+ pages if we had lost.
Mikolas gets all the credit.That E-9 charged to him yesterday in the 1st inning was a textbook “Das Boot” type E on an easy bouncing ball that had been hit to RF for a single. He simply took his eye off it as he was thinking making a throw to 3B to possibly catch the existing baserunner from advancing 1B to 3B. And although it didn’t have any bearing on the outcome of a lopsided 10-3 final, it led directly to an early run for CIN. In any event, he’s 9 for 24, so he gets a pass…Haha! I hope I’m wrong, but I suspect it won’t be too awfully long before the party’s over for Oscar.
Haha! You ain’t kidding, jj! It turned out to be an ingenious tactic put into practice by the Redbird field manager in the area of psychological inspiration and motivation… Miles looked at the line-up card and realized he’d have to work a masterpiece to earn a W.
There is some evidence that opponents are catching on to Mercado. The dude has yet to take a walk. There is no reason to do anything but nibble at the black. If you miss, he will probably swing anyway. He is good at putting it in play though. That is a valuable attribute. But he won’t BABiP .470 forever.
Speaking of the dreaded E’s, little Eddie committed a real bad looking Das Boot E-4 today in the 1st inning. Turned out it didn’t end up inflicting any torment, but it looked really bad. He hasn’t seemed to be as solid with the mitt as I’m accustomed to seeing from him this season. I attribute some of that to the constant shuffling to different sides of the middle IF, but I’d feel better if he’d tighten things up a little. At any rate, players sometimes seem to go on hot and cold streaks with the glove just like they do with the bat and I’m confident he’ll return to form. I hope so anyway.
Yeah, I noticed that right away, Bling, in regards to the absence of a solitary BB after 24 PA’s in 9 games.
Well, this is good…SF wins in a 5-0 final over MIL. I sure wouldn’t have thought the Brewers would have shutout the Astos for 2 consecutive games, but it just shows to go ya’ that you can never be sure where the help’s going to come from.
I’ll be happy when and if we can grind this deficit down to under 5 back. And if we can make up enough ground to get to within 3, that can create a scenario in which the world can change over the course of a weekend series if the stars are aligned and the gears in the box mesh just right.
Boy, you ain’t kidding, ZTR. That’s one of the primary reasons I almost spun a main bearing when I saw this afternoon’s line-up. I mean, the way the first third of this season’s unfolded, how can you possibly justify the luxury of sitting three of your best bats? It turned out okay, but they only scored 2 runs today and 1 of them was a gift. Can’t afford to lose any games with your best players sitting in the dugout at this stage.
Now I’ve got to worry about Cleveland, which I know nothing about. I’m simply going to look on the sunny side and be thankful that J. Thome, M. Ramirez, A. Belle, J. Lofton, E. Murray and C. Baerga aren’t going to be there…How’d you like to face all those guys 4 or 5 times in one game? Talk about some savage and scary Indians…
