Rom through 4 at 74 pitches. 5 Ks so far and 1 BB. 4 H, 1 R. He has another clean inning in the 4th.

I feel like John Lithgow’s character on The Day After.

Another K for Walker. He has stunk after the AS break. Something like .210, 70 OPS+. Well over 100 PAs.

Phillies led off the 5th with a double, like we did in the first. Then Schwarber advanced the runner to 3rd and Turner hit a sac fly to drive him in. I hope our guys were taking notes. Rom through 5, 2-0, 92 pitches. He’s doing OK, so common sense would say let him go out in the 6th and keep an eye on him. We need guys who can go at least 6, so let him try.

Nolan Ryan Nola has retired 17 of the last 18 Cardinals. We have one hit and one walk through 6. 8 Ks.

Rom out there for the 6th and starts out with a strike out. So then here comes Ollie to pull him. Jeesh. Rom ought to throw the ball into the stands instead of handing it to him. Jacob Barnes into the game. I hung in to see how Rom did, so I’m off. Good luck.

Going into the 9th with just one hit! The offense has the day off I guess.

Rom pitched way, way better and against a good team that is fighting for playoff position.

Don’t know what to say about the offense…. it’s just – disappeared, lol.

Well the upside we got 2 hits! The down side we only got 2 hits! Lost by only 3 and not 13 ! All that money batting at the plate the 9th inning with a free runner by walk. And we couldn’t even get one in? Against the big bird Kimbrel? Man I would be ashamed. Give Mo some of his money back. We were totally outclassed this weekend. Oh well we will win one again soon.

I see from the box score we had the tying runners on 2nd and third with one out in the 9th and the middle of our order up. Bronze Bust Arenado and Contract Boy Contreras accomplished what I would have standing in, which is nothing. It is the story of our offense this year. If there is a large run differential in the game, then we can hit with RISP. If the score is tight, we can’t. Some thing all year. We can’t even advance a runner. Just horrible execution of fundamental baseball skills. I think also failure to maintain situational awareness, and have a grasp of what action the situation calls for. Failures of player development, game prep and coaching. Also absense of leadership in the clubhouse and on the top step. Whatever acquisitions Mo makes over winter are not likely to address all that. I think decisions need to be made above his pay grade.

Cardinals only pushed 3 runs across HP in the 3 game series in PHI, but I’ve been reduced to focusing on hits of which they managed only 10 of them in the entire series.

Today presents another new low for the season at 19 under with only 5 days remaining until the much anticipated month of September when we can expect this team to really hit stride…I can hardly contain myself as I imagine submerging to depths that have only been inhabited by species that are indigenous to the Mariana Trench.

Yeah BB, we will be in September this coming Friday. Ollie told us we will benefit in that month from the lousy play in May. What he forgot was, we needed to find something that would help us in June, July and August!

I am convinced that if anybody is going to get fired, it will be after the season. With that in mind, the only thing of significance that could happen in September is somebody getting hurt. In other words, its going to be a dark and gloomy month.

The Springfield Cardinals were down by 8 today going into the bottom of the 9th and scored 9 runs. That means all 4 farm system teams won today.

Not counting the Rookie League or the Dominican team (both of which were atrocious offensively and in their W-L record) the rest of our minor league teams have been much better this year than in recent years. I believe their records range from 9 games over .500 to 2 games under. Record isn’t a great indicator of talent either way since minor league teams aren’t really always trying to do everything to win, but it is still nice to see improvement.

    Here are some specifics.

This year, the four full-season teams in aggregate are currently 11 games over .500 with a .511 winning percentage.

The last year the four full-season teams finished at .511 or better was 2018 (.534). It was also the last year they finished at .500 or better.

Given the offense scored 3 runs in 27 innings this weekend, I think they took the whole weekend off. Just bad.

I didn’t watch the game. I did follow on Gameday as I was doing other things.

With that caveat, I saw that Marmol commented after the game that the players were competing hard (my paraphrase I’m not looking up the quote).

I have been out there mostly alone in defending Marmol. Mainly because I don’t think he has a lot of choices. There is way more wrong with this team that is out of his control.

Nevertheless, I heard that and my first thought was to be skeptical. I just don’t see how this talented offense can be competing hard and be this bad.

Let’s be honest, when you are this far out of contention, there has to be the thought of not injuring yourself in pursuit of futility. In some part of my brain I can see the reasonableness of that.

I guess what I am saying is that I think Marmol is likely bullsh*tting us and I am not sure I blame him. PR still matters.

Then again maybe they are competing hard and they are just that bad.

    Well said Marilyn.

He might actually believe they are competing hard and not understand that in saying so he would be saying they are just that bad.

Well if you look at our current roster from 1 to 26 it is obvious that winning games is not the highest priority of the organization. They are giving borderline guys an opportunity to impress for 2024. There will be no September miracle. Marmol’s comment earlier in the year was just coach speak and you guys know it. What was he supposed to say? “I stink, the front office stinks, and the players stink. This season is only going to get worse.” It would have been the truth but not likely to please the bosses.

There are 11 guys currently on the IL including two starting pitchers, the closer, 1-2 starting outfielders (depending on how you label Carlson) and one starting infielder. This is after they traded away two starting pitchers and the former closer.

I am not defending the poor play, but as noted, this isn’t the team they started with.

The pen is especially questionable with Naile, Lawrence, Suarez, Pallante, VerHagen and Barnes. All except Pallante and VerHagen came off the scrap heap. King was a throw-in and Gallegos is leaking oil, leaving Romero as the last man standing. So Edmundo Sosa fetched the most reliable pen arm… Of every name there, only one, Pallante, is home-grown.

IMO, not enough is being said about the need for a total pen makeover along with the rotation for 2024.
