Weird play in Anaheim last night. Tied 6-6 in the top of the 9th. Rays with 1st and 3rd and nobody out. Anaheim turns a 6-4-3-2 triple play to get out of the inning unscathed.First time ever the Angels have hit a grand slam and turned a triple play in the same game.

Will Mikolas plunk Alonso for tossing Winn’s ball up into the crowd? Now that he’s apologized I doubt if he does. Besides, we can’t afford to lose Mikolas to suspension again as we make that charge for the playoffs.

Fortunately, Winn’s first ML hit ball that Alonso heaved into the stands, fell into the hands of a nice person, as it appeared that they readily surrendered the ball. First off, these guys like Alonso need to be more careful when throwing balls into the stands from a long distance. One of these times a fan is going to sustain a head injury. Depending on the severity of the injury, the offending player will be facing one whale of a lawsuit for intentionally whipping a ball into the stands. And the fan whom nicely gave up Winn’s ball last night. Just out of curiosity, you wonder how much Cardinal merchandise and or money they could have received if they had held out giving up their unexpected windfall, complications of that numbskull Mets 1st baseman? With Winn having the potential of becoming a great player one day, I would think it would be fairly substantial. My guess is that this person could have fetched $5000 cash, Cardinal season tickets for 2025( I doubt any knowledgeable Cardinal fan is thinking that the team will have this mess cleaned up as early as next year), an autographed Winn jersey and a picture of themselves handing this prized ball over to a smiling Masyn Winn.I know these guys are paid professionals but the injuries continue to pile up.
I’d like to see a lot less of guys like Goldschmidt, Arenado, and Mikolas for the rest of the year.
These guys have nothing to prove for next season.
Fans buy tickets to see certain players so they have to play some but can their workload be reduced?
It certainly can be reduced, Z. Management is not concerned one iota whether this team wins games over these next 5 weeks. But of course players want to win each and every game, no matter how significant. And the coaching staff lives may very depend on winning, so we know where they stand. Management rules, so as far as position players go, besides Arenado, who is accruing some nice numbers again this year, we will be seeing a lot less of the Goldy and other mainstays for the remainder of the year.
Yeah, they could rest all of these established Big League guys and use the opportunity to ramp up the activity of the under assistant west coast promo men and their expertise in creating the sort of hype that was brought to bear with the debut of last night’s SS. They can use the same tactics with the remainder of the new faces. That type of strategy not only puts live beings in the seats for this season’s meaningless contests, but also provides a glimmer of hope for those willing to spend their money on tickets for next season. At any rate, even though I’m not at all certain that this new little SS with the funny looking hairdo will save us, I say go ahead and have him situated on the field for every game possible and save Manny Motter’s strength and stamina for ’24…
Back in the 1980’s the Dodgers were fighting for a division crown. At the end of the season the lost 2 of 3 to their arch rival giants.
The other team, Atlanta, was playing an opponent that played a bunch of 4A players. The Braves swept their series and the Dodgers cried ‘foul’an autographed Winn jersey and a picture of themselves handing this prized ball over to a smiling Masyn Winn.
If it was me, I’d ask for autographed pictures of Willie McGee and Jose Oquendo. Possibly the last two guys in the orgnization who would remember the real Cardinal way and who know what they are doing. I’d also like a chance to wish the youngster good luck.
Taking a gander at the out-of-town scoreboard:
The Cubs down Kansas City today. 6-4 the final at Wrigley. Bellhopper a couple of homeruns for the Cubs.
Toronto and Cincinnati are currently tied. It’s 0-0 in the top of the 1st at Crosley Field.
Pittsburgh and Minnesota are scoreless early on at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome.
And the Brewers lead the Rangers 2-1 in the 5th down in Arlington.
I’ve always found it really odd that Jose Oquendo never seemed to be at the top of either Billy Jr. or Johnny’s list as a potential Redbird field manager. It simply doesn’t stand up to reason. I’ve been led to believe that he was more than interested in being situated on the top step of the dugout, but for one reason or another they thought both Shildt and the current whiz-kid were better choices that Oquendo, who I feel has more baseball knowledge in his worn down cleats than the current Cardinal manager. In regards to Willie McGee, it’s my view that he would never consider taking the job even if it were ever taken under consideration or offered up.

SS Masyn Winn RI agree about Willie. I thinks he just wants to enjoy still being in the game, and stay out of the spotlight, as he always did. The thing I don’t get about Oquendo is why he never managed for somebody else either. It seems like he should have gotten the chance.
Yeah, Willie’s too smart to take on all of those headaches. He’s always impressed me as the sort of person who possesses the type of genuine wisdom that dictates that peace of mind and ease of heart are treasures that no amount of gold or fame could ever eclipse. Furthermore, he strikes me as a guy who runs from the spotlight as quick as he could once burn down the 1B line while hitting from the left side…Haha! I genuinely think he completed that sprint quicker than did Bake McBride, and anyone who ever sat in a cheap seat from up top and watched him go first to home on an extra base hit knows that he accelerated in a manner that could be termed vicious. Willie was one heck of a baseball player and has alway impressed me as an even better human being.
At a time of year when the buzz would normally be about the prospects for the Redbirds being in the thick of Big League post-season baseball action, you just know that it’s been a really lousy season for Cardinal baseball when a leading article’s headline in the local StL. paper reads, “Five high school softball players to watch this fall”…
LOL 1TD. Not much to cheer about in this clunker tonight. One dinger by Nado. 2 gift runs for the Mets from us. Lindor hits every ab. May be better just to walk him.
Senga looks like a nice pick up for the Mets. They signed him for $15m per year for five years with a sixth year option. Coming 8th tonight, he has started 22 games, tossed 122 innings, 1.28 WHIP and 3.30 ERA. The
Redbirds could use two or three pitchers like him.I have been out of town for a couple of days for a family reunion, just checking in for scores and to see what people are saying.
What I will say is, “Is this one lousy ball club or what?!” The Mets, not exactly a powerhouse these days, more like the Stengel teams than those of Davey Johnson, are kicking our butts this series!
