Since Mikolas got a five game suspension and 2 starters are about to be traded I guess Hudson and Liberatore will move into the starting rotation?
Should be epic.
Remember that starters pitch every fifth day. So even if Mikolas loses his appeal, his next start could be delayed by just one day – and he will be well-rested, having pitched so briefly on Thursday. It is not a huge slap on the wrist to a starting pitcher.
Yeah I know but getting tossed in the first basically skipped that start and then 5 games even with no days off does delay his next regular start by a day. With Flaherty and Montgomery likely gone I think there will be an odd start in there to give to someone. Who knows? Maybe Mo will get a starting pitcher back that is ML ready?
The Cubs are now a winning baseball team, thanks to us. We can only hope the Nooter smacks three potatoes today to bring a little joy back to Mudville.
An interesting graphic on the Cubs broadcast last night. In comparing the two teams offense they showed OPB, home runs, and runs scored per game. Each team has about the same amount of runs per game, the Cubs a tad higher, and the same OBP. But our club had hit 28 more home runs than them.
That shows we just do not make our hits count for much relative to them. I think some of that is due to poor lineup construction for our club.
They also showed starting and relieving ERAs, which Chicago is better than us in both. But we all know that just watching the games.
Waino makes me sad. Even the situations like his last start where he all but had the W in the bag somehow slipped away from the team. Part of me hopes he gets to #200 ASAP and then slips off into retirement mid season. It’s no fun to watch him pitch poorly.
Mike an interesting stat would be how many RBIs driven in by way of home run divided by number of homers. My perception is we are abnormally good at hitting homers when they will do the least amount of good.
The Cardinals have a beautiful opportunity here and I pray that they view it as such. In the vast majority of these situations where a team is riding as high as a kite and have just literally plucked victory out of the jaws of defeat, compliments of what cub fans may now forever refer to as “The Catch”, they keep on a rolling and will certainly win and most likely sweep their series. The Cardinals have a golden opportunity here to destroy their arch rivals sky high momentum and in turn hurt their chances for post season play. The Redbirds can transform what is shaping up as an epically disastrous and embarrassing series vs the cubs into one that is palatable and gives their fans hope for a better tomorrow sooner rather than later. The Cardinals just need to not go out their with their heads down and allow these hated rivals to continue to abuse them in their own ballpark. Just go out there with extreme focus and have a bunch of fun by beating the tar out of these guys.
Pugs mentioned I should comment a bit on the big sports collectors show. I am flying back later today, although the show runs through Sunday. I attended yesterday and Thursday.
These shows a are getting bigger every year. The hobby is booming, with a lot more kids and younger folks being involved than in the past.
Picked up some nice vintage cards and memorabilia (“vintage” in the collector’s market is basically pre-1980s, and even ‘70s is not always true “vintage”).
In addition to some bulk items picked up a Mantle card, a Mays, and a Ted Williams. There was this cool unique item I passed on, but seriously considered it. It was supposedly a game used (navy blue, so early ‘60s vintage) that had belonged to Bill White, but it was not certified “game used”. Inside the hat was White’s signature and an inscription, “given to John Roseboro.” Really unique – thought the guy had it overpriced though since it was not authenticated.
Whether you are a casual collector or serious about it, you would find something there. Just be prepared to be in crowds. Oh, and met Mike Schmidt and Jim Kaat for autographs.
Alright, let’s see if our club can make a series out of this. Five straight losses to the baby bears is unacceptable. Ollie should be ashamed (and fired while we are at it!)
Sweet report, BicycleMike. Without the proper provenance, I think you made the correct call on refraining from your game used Bill White uni. Out of curiosity, how much were they asking for it. My guess would be $650. And what did Jimmy Kaat have to say……super nice guy!
That Bill White item was a cap – the guy wanted $250 for it. I felt it should be more like $125 – at least that is all I would have spent on it – maybe $150. Still a cool item and would have looked good in one of my displays. I was hesitant since there was no certification, and was more interested in some other items. Probably should have pulled the trigger on it though, and then see about getting it PSA/DNA certified.
I told Kaat that all these years later I still can’t understand Billy Martin not using him in the 1969 AL playoffs. Kaat replied with kind of a wry smile, “I don’t think he wanted to win the series.”
Quick little trivia question that I know BicycleMike would know without looking. This ex-Cardinal hurler from Lacoochee, Florida, coined the baseball term “chin music”. Who am I?
John Roseboro was the catcher on that 1969 ALCS Twins team. My dad blamed him for losing the series for the Twins. Why? because dad was a big Harmon Killebrew fan for whatever reason. Game 1 was tied in extra innings. An Oriole laid down a bunt and the runner on third scored the winning run. The bunt went out toward 3rd, but not too far. Neither Killebrew nor Roseboro got to it, and some commentators suggested Killebrew had been caught flat footed. Dad would have none of that and blamed Roseboro for the game 1 loss and the series going down hill from there.
I might have guessed that Jim Kaat was on that team, but never in a million years that Martin managed it.
Think about a game where Martin is in one dugout and Weaver in the other. They don’t have baseball like that any more. I wouldn’t want to be an umpire.
The mention of Jim Kaat brings back many baseball memories, foremost of which may be how I imagined the sense of satisfaction and happiness he must have felt when he finally attained being part of a WS Championship team at 43 years of age, 23 years after he had emerged into the Big Leagues in ’59. Whitey used him plenty during the Redbird’s ’82 run to a NL Pennant and WS Championship, and I watched him work from my seat at Busch Memorial on several occasions that season. He appeared in 62 games in which he collected 75 innings of work and put a 5-3 W/L record into the books along with 2 saves. And although he posted a somewhat pedestrian 4.08 ERA that season, he seemed to always have the ability to record an out when one was sorely needed. At any rate, I always felt comfortable watching the big lefty walk from the BP area located down the RF line and over to the mound and then seeing Herzog hand him the baseball.

The Doppler Radar shows a big pile of green stuff still in the area around game time. Expect this one to at least be delayed.
Anybody got the scoop? It’s just about time for 1st pitch. Is there going to be a delay?
UPDATE: Yahoo Sports/MLB says there is a delay. Doppler Radar doesn’t look all that great. This might take a while. Then again, who knows.
With the Rangers adding Max may y’all can send that rain down this way with him. It’s dry as the desert the Cardinals are slowly walking through.
It’s presently 73 degrees under very rainy conditions in the greater St. Louis metropolitan area, Rat. However, we should experience a drying out period commencing at 8:22pm (cst) this evening. Winds are swirling out of the north-northwest at a 12 mph clip, with our barometric pressure sitting at 30 inHg, dew point at 70 degrees and a sweltering humidity of 93%. Translation……. it’s a coin flip as to if they want to wait until around 9:15-9:30pm to get tonight’s scheduled game under way or to just play 2 tomorrow? Flip a coin, Rat……just not one of your 2 headed ones.
