I’m guessing that we would have read something, but I wonder what the delay is in announcing the signing of Luis Miguel Leon? It’s been two months since word leaked…

Maybe Leon will be signing when the new signing period starts in January? I really don’t know, but just a guess. Maybe Brian has heard something…..

Despite their terrible records in both the FCL & DSL leagues, are there any real glimmers of light or reasons for optimism (hope) amongst the individual players? I’m asking those who follow this closer than I do (i.e. merely looking at the box scores & cringing)…

For DSL its slim pickins. Hitting wise just Pena and Junco. Pitching wise just Bautitsta.

The Cardinals need to invest way more into their international infrastructure

BHCard, I totally agree with you! The international market is where you can pick up high end talent even though you don’t have lower draft picks (until they start an International draft). I know the Cards have a presence in the DR, and have invested money there, but not aware of other involvement in Latin America. Would love to see them invest more there!

Gronky – It’s been really ugly for both of those teams. Our DSL team has as close to zero offense as you can get. I like Yordalin Peña. He’s been cold lately though. But he’s a talented enough outfielder that we should see him stateside at some point. They do have several decent pitchers who could also come over. Ynfante is probably the one with the most talent to keep your eye on. As for our FCL team, they’ve been a little better lately if you ignore today and yesterday. But overall, they’ve been fairly bad at both pitching and hitting as a whole. We have a few prospects there and several other players of interest, but almost none of those really qualifies as having a good season.

Don’t worry too much about the record. The focus isn’t really on winning games. But do worry about how many players they are developing into good players and who are advancing up. And right now that last part looks pretty ugly. I’m actually a little nervous about our MLB offense long term because we don’t have as much depth now as we had a couple years back. Fortunately, we have a core there that could be around for a while. But where there’s now a lack of great position players, we have filled that hole with a pipeline of more promising pitchers. Most of them are above the Rookie league teams.

Herrera and Bernal, both catching prospects, are from Panama. So the Cardinals apparently have a scout down there. I don’t know of any pitchers from Panama, though. Also, they have a connection in Venezuela. But it’s my understanding that they don’t actually send scouts there because it’s too dangerous.

Speaking of Ivan Herrera, the Cardinals do not list him in their Top 30. I wonder why that is?

I think it was Brian mentioned a cut off of 45 days spent on the active roster for that list.

Thank you jnevel & all others for the insights! I couldn’t agree more that the Cards need to start making the international market a viable, annual source of talent. An extra 5-10 million per year in Latin American infrastructure would be money far better spent than the annual 5 million to a middle reliever at the MLB level. I realize that the international market is highly volatile & the Cards are pretty much risk averse, but the Orioles, who largely ignored the international market until like 3 years ago (& can’t have that many long standing relationships), already have a better talent pipeline than the Cards…

If you look back to last year on this thread, you will see this name listed as a potential signing for the Cardinals. That never happened, and he wasn’t heard from until now. Wonder why that didn’t work out?
