The Amazing Mookie — what a name. We need a guy named Mookie. That might be better than a Manny — whatya think 1td?
And no gscott, it’s not that Mookie played multiple positions in some games. He played multiple positions during some plays. That’s how good he is. I bet he pulls off the hit-the-same-ball-you-pitched trick better than Bugs Bunny. Yep, I hope Mo is working on getting us a Mookie.
And timeout for trivia — who was “Mookie” named after? Talking about the nickname. Also, what is the 3-letter monogram (initials) of his legal name. No cheating here. Mo will never land a Mookie if you cheat. That’d be the one case where it’d be the poster’s fault instead of Mo’s.
Betts was a guy that I really hoped the Cards would take a swing at when the Red Sox were willing to trade him a few years back. Of course they wouldn’t trade Flaherty, Reyes, Carlson, O’Neill, etc then and we all know how that turned out.
Also, it shows how badly the defense fell off from 2022 to 2023. That was nearly as big an issue as the bad pitching, and maybe the two were pretty intertwined after all.
A Mookie would possibly be as good as a Manny if it weren’t for former NY Met, Mookie Wilson…I’ll never ever be able to vouch for any former player who played for the Mets in the mid ’80’s. But hey, the Cardinals once had Mookie’s step son Preston Wilson, who was a component of the ’06 WS championship edition…That oughta’ be close enough. In any event, Mannys always seem to vault a team over the top. Manny Motter is a case in point…I hope Johnny can persuade him to bring his multiple talents back to the Redbirds next season. He and the current Cardinal manager are obviously going places together…
Haha!…I had no idea, so I had to look it up, Euro. The monogram is impressive and fitting! I was also able to see that his mom was his first little league coach. I thought that was pretty neat. We need her in place of the current Cardinal manager…In any case, I know better than to post the answers and take a chance on hobbling Johnny in his quest to locate and sign an all important Mookie or Manny. There has to one out there somewhere…
1td, I know some of your tendencies and figured you’d say something like that about Wilson and the Mets!
And stlcard makes a good point about the D and pitching being intertwined, especially with the lack of power pitchers. Given that backdrop, it felt like early on it was a strategic mistake to sacrifice the OF defense for more slug, especially when the slug wasn’t all that sluggy.

This year’s team fell off in every possible way. Last year we had two winners, Arenado and Edman. The year before also two, Goldschmidt and O’Neal. There were two in 2020 also.
I do not dispute the results, but I believe there is a voting awards bias in favor of players on good teams and against those on bad teams, making it harder for the latter even if a particular individual is good. Not specific to these awards. Just a general perception.

I recall decades ago an ACC basketball coach justifying why a couple of his players got all-conference awards over some other players many fans thought were better. That team won the championship and the coach said “to the victor go the spoils.” It does make sense that the awards would be overweight to the better teams. Better players, better teams — that’s usually how it works.
However, in this case it’s kind of the opposite. If you take the team records of the 10 winners and combine them, you get a losing record of 800-820. Or looking at it another way, only 4 of the 10 winners were on teams that made the watered down playoffs.

That pretty much ruined the Gold Glove award as far as I’m concerned.
Nolan Arenado is the lone #STLCards finalist for a Silver Slugger award this year. He has won the award five times, including last season.

It seems as though our unheralded prospects perform well, while the highly ranked guys usually don’t get to the expected levels. It’s an odd phenomenon.
