Good question in a murky area. Here is the full list of moves for Naughton:
3/25 Optioned out
4/22 Recalled
5/2 Optioned out
5/3 Recalled for Matz bereavement
5/6 Matz off bereavement, Wainwright onto COVID IL (assumption is that Naughton went from covering for Matz to covering for Waino)
5/14 Optioned out
5/17 Recalled 27th man DH
5/18 Optioned out
So spring training was Option 1, but that doesn’t count against the five since the new rule started 5/2. Starting 5/2, an option period is 15 days for pitchers, but that option period was interrupted at least twice for Naughton, once for the bereavement replacement and again for the 27th man. Or a third time, depending on how covering for Waino’s COVID is counted (if that is what happened).
My interpretation is that just one option against the five has been used do far.
