One of my sons doesn’t have cable and he does have MLB.TV and a VPN which he says allows him to get around all the blackouts. I am thinking of going that route and ditching cable.

Can’t vouch for the quality of this article, but might be worth your read.

Also, if you are a student (with ID.me login) or military (with GovX.com login), you get about $50 off the MLB.tv annual subscription price. Not sure of the exact details, but you don’t have to be currently active military to get the discount. I got it for 2021 and left the military in 2004.

Hey Euro Dandy. We are going to expect to start seeing you before and during game threads real soon here, instead of after. You’re missed.
Cardinal In France too, but he has a good excuse being in the south of France.

Thanks for the blackout info, Euro!

Thanks for the PBP Pugs. We had a memorial service of a friends wife to attend while the game was going and my mood has been picked up by reading your commentary.

Nice win, guys…and thanks for covering the game, Pugs. It’s always a good day when your pitching staff shuts the other team out. Hopefully the Cards can finish off a sweep tomorrow.

You’re very welcome, gentlemen (JJ & stlcard25). Always a fun time with you guys when I can hop on these game threads. My absolute dream would be to give real live audio PBP for these game threads. When you’re an extremely slow typist such as myself, it’s difficult to convey what’s happening out there into just a few words. Too bad about your friend’s wife, JJ. Hopefully there were no small children directly affected. Bring out the brooms tomorrow gang.

Not to be a downer but the competition other than Milwaukee isn’t exactly top tier. Still doing what needs to be done. Not seeing a change in the young bats. How many years before it becomes long enough of a trial? Dejong should of lost his job 2 years ago. Bader you can live with but wouldn’t take much to upgrade there. O’Neill isn’t a lock by no means but seems to be the only of the three with an improved bat the last three years.

I am liking the way Edman is digging in with his lower half. May have even added some weight there. I wish Carlson had more lower half in his swing. He seems very upright at times.

Carlson got lucky hitting it through the shift tonight. Can’t count on that. I like the way Dickerson hit it past 3rd near the bag, you don’t see a lefty do that much.

Speaking of O’Neill, at the start of the season I heard quite a bit about a contract extension. But nothing of late. Do you think the Cards are waiting to see how he handles this hitting slump before proceeding further?

Edman has been pretty consistent. Hasn’t hit below .250 in his short career. He’s a gamer. Carlson hasn’t figured it out yet. He looks so comfortable at the plate and in the field. He is still just 23. I feel like he will bust out and have a really good year. He’s got to get past these 3-4 game slumps with no hits. Become a more consistent hitter. I think O’Neill is the key for this team to contend. If he backslides gonna be a tough year. If he continues his progress gonna be a heckuva player.

Good game today. I liked the aggressiveness on the bases. Hudson pitched well. Sure it’s the reds but you still have to go out and do it. A good confidence boost for him anyway. let’s go for the sweep tomorrow

“Is Votto officially the worst contract in baseball?”

“Worst contract has to be Upton isn’t it? Like 28 mil and was told to GTFOH by LAA management.”

Two solid nominees, gentlemen. Though in fairness it must be noted that Votto had a very nice bounceback season in 2021: 36 homers and 99 ribbies in just 129 games. And although this has no bearing on his contract value, he also topped 2,000 career knocks, which probably clinched an eventual spot in the Hall Of Fame.

My selection, however, would be Nationals lefty Patrick Corbin. Since the start of 2020 he’s been cumulatively below replacement level, at a cost of roughly $30MM so far and another $20MM by the end of this season. And then over the next two years he’ll be paid another $60 million(!) to apparently be quite dreadful. (His ERA is a whisker under 6.00 for his last 45 starts.)

Nice contract bust nominee in the person of Patrick Corbin, Bobby. Your mention of Joey Votto’s possible HoF induction is one worth contemplating. That’s a tough one for me. Right now I see him sitting atop the Cooperstown fence, not teetering moreso on one side vs the other.

Keuchels 3/55.5mil may be underwater before seasons end. CWS likely keep him under 160 IP this season to avoid his 2023 20mil club option from automatically vesting.

Hudson with a GmSc of 70 saturday, matching Mikolas 70 as the rotations highest this season. Matz has a 69 and Wainwright a 68.

Hudson recorded 20 outs and faced 23 total batters, facing the top 5 Cindy batters a third time. Many of Hudsons four walks and HBP were erased on the basepaths.

Dakota got the “right the ship” start he needed. His season GmSc average is now 51.

Of course there is Trevos Bauer and his contract

That is my pick too CC. The Dodgers are paying Bauer $35M per year to be on administrative leave.

Eric Hosmer and Wil Myers have been bad contracts too. The Padres tried to offload both this past offseason but there were no takers. Hosmer has picked it up a little lately though.

Another candidate is Robinson Cano. He is being paid $24M per year by the Mets/Mariners to do very little.
And David Price is being paid $32M per year by the Dodgers/Red Sox to be a mop up guy.

Thanks for the shout out, Pugs! It was a great day to be at the ballpark, even though I was surrounded by Reds fans! There was a large contingency of vocal Cardinal fans above the Cards dugout! We had pretty good shaded seats on the first base side on the second level. Reds fans were rooting for their team, but I heard several complaints about their FO not giving the team much of a chance this year. (of course, having several key players on the IL didn’t help much, either)

One big takeaway was the wind! Generally blowing in from right field all game, but there were times later in the game that I saw the flags in center field change direction. Within a 10-15 second stretch the flags changed from blowing to LF, then straight towards home, and then blowing out to right! It was weird! With the wind constantly blowing in, balls would have to be hit really hard to make it over the fence. None did!

Hudson’s outing was good, but he seemed to be trying to get hitters to go outside the strike zone, resulting in too many walks. Watching the game, I was surprised that his pitch count wasn’t much higher than it really was!

Defense looked good except for Edman’s airmail in the first. I was impressed by Bader’s arm when he gunned down the runner at third. He really had some zip on that throw!

Arenado looked like he needs a day off! Really seems like he isn’t seeing the ball well at the plate.

PDJ has lost his confidence at the plate. Timing seems to be a tick off. Playing solid defense, tho.

Fun note: When Pujols came in to bat, the Cardinal faithful cheered, and maybe some of the Reds fans, but I heard a lot of boos as well! Really hoped he would launch one for us, but it wasn’t to be!

Overall a very fun time. Pugs did a great PBP online! The result was what we were looking for, even if I would have liked to see them score a few more runs! And thanks for the info on VPN’s. Trying to make that work for me with MLB.TV here in Western Indiana!

Sounds like you had a ball in the Queen City, CardsFan64. Thanks for sharing your experience. You made mention of the howling erratic winds. I think they have markedly intensified in many, if not most, locations here in the US. I’ve noticed a big change these last couple of years way up here in Wisconsin. Our weather patterns are changing, and not for the good. Since Rat lives in Indiana too, you two should take in a Cards-Reds game sometime. I think stlcard25 might live there also. If you went to a game with those two yahoos, it would be an experience you’d never forget.
