I don’t like the minors season being pushed back, but the players won’t miss a ton of development with the alternate camp being a thing again. Now, if they still aren’t playing games in June/July, that’s a different story.
This morning, #stlcards President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak fielded questions about the return of the alternate camp for April 2021, while cautioning not to read too much into what is hoped to be a "30-day experience". (free) https://t.co/BxQOebNwIRpic.twitter.com/0pBOJ6htQP
That is a reasonable alternative, but one MLB as a group discarded. With no alternate camp, if a home injury occurs, the replacement would have to be dispatched from Jupiter to St. Louis. Could turn into a two-day gap, not to mention exposure to commercial airlines, etc. Is a quarantine required when the replacement is brought into the team bubble? On the other hand, same-day replacements are possible with alternate camp nearby. A simple car drive for a safe one bubble to another move.
5 man táxi squad should aliviate need for next day replacement. Teams often have had AAA teams on the opposite Coast from where they are at w/o the táxi squad and always survived.
