LHP Carlos Martínez (4-9, 6.38) vs. RHP Germán Marquez (7-6, 3.62)
BSM // KMOX
Also BSSW+ in Oklahoma and Arkansas and BSSO in TN, KY and MSJuly 4, 2021 at 12:02 am #165514Why is Martinez still in the starting rotation?
Sane reason Carpenter is still wasting a roster spot?
July 4, 2021 at 12:19 am #165515How does Schildt and Alvarez still have a job?
Coors Field, a day game, and Carlos Martinez pitching… it doesn’t get much scarier than that.. Of course, the manager will leave him in as long as he can since he only likes to pull people who give 0 or 1 run thru 5.
July 4, 2021 at 12:35 am #165516I meant Albert not Alvarez…
July 4, 2021 at 12:59 am #165517My prediction for today’s game Cardinals 1 —- Rockies 7, going to the 2nd inning
July 4, 2021 at 7:06 am #165520Carlos looked good last time out against the dreadful DBs but terrible the two times before that. Marquez has been lights out recently. It could get ugly early.
July 4, 2021 at 7:25 am #165521“Why is Martinez still in the starting rotation?”
What’s the alternative?
July 4, 2021 at 8:34 am #165522The Cardinals have become regular visitors to the pitching scrapheap for relievers so – why not load up on a couple of starters?
Who knows? Maybe they find the Roy Hobbs of pitching.
July 4, 2021 at 8:46 am #165523They did find LeBlanc and getting some mileage so it is not impossible.
July 4, 2021 at 9:00 am #165527I would really rather they pick up younger pitchers instead of older ones though, LeBlanc is certainly only a placeholder type guy to use to ‘get through’ 2021 and is not on any way, shape, or form a part of the organization’s future.
July 4, 2021 at 11:10 am #165539Carpenter got two atbats last night and struck out both times.
How much longer is he going to hang on?
Any chance he simply walks away, perhaps at the ASB?
July 4, 2021 at 11:27 am #165540I agree with the comments of some posters who have basically thrown in the towel on this season. It started out promising, but too many injuries and too many position players not hitting up to expectations have resulted in a mediocre club. That combined with Milwaukee running away from the crowd, and the division looks to be settled.
Things could turn around – it has happened. But the odds are not favorable by any means. There is really no reason to play Matt Carpenter at this point, as he will not be part of the future. But then I am not sure anyone is available in the high minors to audition.
We are in a seller’s situation. We should shop just about everyone other than Carlson, O’Neill, Reyes and Flaherty. Teams value bullpen help for a pennant push, so the most marketable guys are likely Cabrera and Gallegos. We might be able to make a nice deal to get some young, upside guys for either of them. Martinez is an obvious candidate to move as well, but I doubt he would bring much back.
Whoa – news flash. The lineup just came through, and Matt Carpenter is hitting 4th!! What!!??
This one will likely be embarrassing. Marquez is good, Martinez is not so good. Looks to be a 10-2 Rockies winner.
July 4, 2021 at 11:33 am #165542But then I am not sure anyone is available in the high minors to audition.
Kramer Robertson is the obvious choice to take Carpenter’s position, but it seems as though they are intent on letting Carpenter play out the year.

I find it funny that everyone complains about our bullpen this year, but wants to trade away the bullpen pieces that have been most effective. What do we do for a bullpen next year?
July 4, 2021 at 11:34 am #165543Continuing a bit – Kim is another guy who could bring some value back. Wainwright might be one as well, but that would be a public relations issue as well – same with Yadi. Management would need to discuss the situation with each guy first before consider moving them.
Despite having to deal with appeasing the fan base, dealing either of them could be a smart move for both parties. Waino and Yadi would get back into a pennant race, and maybe we get some guys to help in the coming years – perhaps even a stud.
July 4, 2021 at 11:39 am #1655451. Dylan Carlson (S) LF .261
2. Paul Goldschmidt (R) 1B .256
3. Nolan Arenado (R) 3B .265
4. Matt Carpenter (L) 2B .167
5. Tommy Edman (S) RF .264
6. Harrison Bader (R) CF .212
7. Paul DeJong (R) SS .175
8. Andrew Knizner (R) C .193
9. Carlos Martinez (R) P .087YIKES !
July 4, 2021 at 11:50 am #165546Almost everybody got a hit last night. Not to be negative I also believe we must build now towards next year.Personally I would like to see Sosa bunting every once in a while to get some confidence. DeJong has occasional power but really needs to focus more on making contact. Can’t swing out of your socks every time and hit anything. We really do have some guys that could do much more.Martinez can be wild at times but also quite good when hes on.Just have to have a quick hook when he gets 2 guys on. It seems to un-nerve him. Lets split it today!
July 4, 2021 at 12:00 pm #165547Man oh man, that is one horrible lineup. Terrible construction. What on earth is going through Shildt’s mind?????
July 4, 2021 at 12:04 pm #165548With that lineup Schilt is trying to get fired. Four through six is a complete joke.
July 4, 2021 at 12:08 pm #165549Yeah but watch the Cards score 8 runs today to solidify the decision.
Sunday line up today I guess but it’s still a joke.
July 4, 2021 at 12:11 pm #165550Yep, after today we have to start playing real teams again. The Giants are very good. The Cubs have struggled recently but they have owned us this year.
The stretch of 13 games vs. Detroit, Pittsburgh, Arizona and Colorado which loomed as a chance for the #stlcards to get right and make up some ground ends today.
They have lost ground. With a win today, they finish that stretch 6-7.
Happy Fourth!

July 4, 2021 at 12:24 pm #165551That might be the worst 4-9 I’ve ever seen in a Cardinal lineup. I think I’ll continue to pass on watching them play for a while longer.
While I wouldn’t trade Cabrera, I’d consider a trade of Gallegos. He’s the best trade chip we have and he’ll be 30 next year so it might make sense to cash in while his value is high.

ParticipantI don’t like this lineup at all. I know with oneil getting hurt again, it creates problems. Why couldn’t we put sosa in there so we don’t have two guys that have really been dismal in there. Oneil getting hurt is becoming an issue as well. I’m not sure this season can get any worse.
July 4, 2021 at 1:28 pm #165556It can always get worse – don’t temp it.
July 4, 2021 at 2:50 pm #165562So funny they actually scored some runs with this lineup. Wonders never cease.
July 4, 2021 at 2:52 pm #165563Number 4 batter and number 6 batter making waves today. Shildt’s looking like a genius so far.
