I asked Shildt if the #stlcards were concerned Génesis Cabrera was tipping pitches and he, directly, said “yes.” Said the Pirates had three hits on pitches out of the zone and were hitting every single pitch.

ParticipantYou can talk about the manager all you want, but these players are pros, and it’s up to them to produce. For instance, Matt Carpenter’s play is abysmal. He’s choked off by the shift. So bunt the ball the other way on a consistent basis. The one time he tried it he got a double. Eventually it will get them out of the shift. And demand that he never, never argue with an umpire after a called 3rd strike. It’s only a sign of his own frustration. Paul DeJong? Demand that he hits the ball where it’s pitched. Stop trying to jack the ball out of the park.

bccran, I used to feel this way too, but I’ve changed my thinking some. For older guys like us, it seems like it’s the obvious thing for guys like Bader (due to his speed) and Carp (due to the shift) to do to raise their OBP. Maybe it’s self fulfilling prophecy, but if you “never” do it, then maybe you aren’t capable of doing it. Time is a finite resource, so the more they work on bunting, the less time they have for perfecting that precisely calibrated launch angle swing that they’ve mastered so well.
It’s still worthy of criticism, but it is more of a player development flaw than an in-game tactical flaw.
August 27, 2021 at 11:01 am #170877That was a good comment scotty mad and I especially thought about whether Clapp would be any better than Shildt. Bob Reed I think it was mentioned Clapp positively and noted he won a MiLB title not too long ago.
My thinking is Clapp wouldn’t be where he is if he was not every bit the yes man Shildt is. Same with Warner. Either might be better at the day to day aspect of managing pitchers and constructing a lineup. But there is something bad wrong with the organization which has turned it from a productive developer of serviceable players to a wasteland which seems to invariably get the least out of players. I hope DeWit knows the solution is going to take new blood.
August 27, 2021 at 11:59 am #17088080% of the pitching rotation was injured for most of the season and that killed the bullpen.
When was the last time we didn’t lose more starters to the DL than not?

ParticipantI can’t ever remember a time when we lost 4 of our top 5 starters.
August 27, 2021 at 2:40 pm #170890I notice Bader’s bat is MIA again.

Too bad they saw it and we didn’t, until it was too late at least. Maybe get Maddux new glasses.
