Question: Prior to the 2019 draft there was a player eligible for the 2019 draft who had previously been named as a possible first overall for the 2020 draft. Who was that player?

    Answer: Our own Trejyn Fletcher

I knew hardly anything about this kid until today. Derrick Goold wrote a piece for the Post-Dispatch today about future outfielders in the organization and Fletcher is one of them.

    VEB posted this yesterday:

The Cardinals were among the teams who cut players Thursday. As of Friday, May 29, the club had not yet announced which players were released. Most likely these players are “non-prospect” minor leaguers – players who filled depth positions for minor league clubs but were not expected to develop into major leaguers.

We will make some mistakes as will most of the teams. That is how guys like Brebbia make it to the show. They were either cut or not drafted. With fewer spots more mistakes will be made.

Sounds like a cheap way to keep a few of the higher end players slightly fresh for next season. I would be interested to follow along, although I doubt there will be any TV. I guess Brian would be making a visit to one or the other league to see how things were going for us.

Frankly I see no reason the GCL season couldn’t be played. Dress half your kids each day and use common sense

So there won’t be a minor league season, but maybe there will be ball at Hammons Field.

MM3, it looks like you were sort of right. Nothing about collegiate leagues, but affiliated players can play in indy ball.

“MLB has told its teams that affiliated minor league players cannot be prevented from playing independent league baseball as long as their contracts are suspended because of the national emergency. Indy ball clubs expect to have some players come play. ($)”

The only downside I can see is that the affiliated guys will take jobs from the non-affiliated guys. Fewer leagues are playing, as well…

P.S. I wonder if players can double dip with their indy ball pay plus the $400 per week from their MLB team or would they have to give the latter up?

I asked the author of the BA article and he thinks the answer is yes. I hope teams comply.

Looks like the MiLB season will officially be cancelled Tuesday.

Cooper updated his earlier comment. Players cannot play without permission, which is how it has been all along. The difference in 2020 is that MLB teams may be more inclined to approve.

Indy league teams, especially East Coast ones, are finding it difficult if not impossible to play in 2020.

MiLB committees are nice and all, but the decision on whether there will be any minor league camps or instructional leagues rest solely with the MLB owners.
