Well this is not looking good. Think Bader should have thrown to second and not home.
Cardinal defense has not been as good this year as the 2019 version.
Major meltdown from Gallegos and Helsley. I thought Gallegos should use his breaking ball more. Now maybe we know why he has not been using it as much.
What in the world happened? I had something else work on and had to leave, but thought the Cards had it in hand. You can’t blow leads to junk teams like the Tigers. Just can’t do it. Helsley has been bad since he came back. Gallegos was due for some regression. Still, 5 runs to lose it is unacceptable.
That makes 3 games the Cards have lost where at some point very late they were 92% or better to win the game. Twice they’ve lost after holding a 3-run lead in the next-to-last inning, and once with a 2-run lead in the final frame. I have often seen entire 162-game Cardinal seasons where those three things did not happen.
It feels like the worst baserunning and worst bullpenning keep happening only when it matters the very most. And it feels that way because that’s exactly the way it is. Between the managerial malfeasance and unsightly fundamentals, I’m done with this team for the year. See you all next season.
Groin injury for Gallegos. He had no known issues coming in. Shildt did not ask him exactly on which pitch it occurred. Imaging planned to tell them severity.
Shildt also said that if Bader hadn’t thrown home to allow the runners to move up, he would have pitched to Cabrera, rather than walking him intentionally. Called it a “whole different scenario.”
yea Bader should have thrown it so it could have been cut off though in the end, im not sure it would have mattered. Bullpen just didnt get it done. People talk like the tigers are bad. Record wise they are right there with the cardinals and play in a lot tougher division in my eyes. I think its time for bader to sit again this time cause hes actually struggling and we have some other guys hitting, kind of surprised he played second game. Pitchers have went from just feeding him offspeed pitches since hes not as wild on those now to pitching him up in the zone which he just cant seem to lay off. If he was taught to get on top of the ball he would be able to hit those but they dont teach that now. A couple days off to study film might help him.
Within a matter of minutes we go from cruising to a sweep to losing a shocking game and possibly losing our closer. All you can do is shake your head. Wow.
No comment on the OF performance in this game. Especially the 0 for 7 with 4 Ks and the misplayed throw to home on the 7th. Reyes continues to look good! Same with Gant. Two positive aspects!

A few days ago, I asked and was told he is in Springfield and is playing catch. He would need pens then simulated games before returning, so it does not seem he is close.
Really hope Gallegos can recover before end of season but groin injuries can take time depending on severity. I had the feeling in the 6th inning that the Cardinals were on cruise control and felt that something bad was around the corner. It was. Still, as much as I criticize Carp he seems to come through when needed. But DH and spot 3B starts is about as much as I see for his future.
The tough thing is we seem to be in this pattern of winning big and losing close. We are a +17 in run differential. Yesterday we outscored Detroit 15-8, yet only split.
This indicates that we should end up with a better record than we have now. Our pythagorean is 21-16. But there are those years where teams either greatly over or under-achieve. One of the most glaring examples of that is the 1984 New York Mets. Take a look at their actual record against their pythagorean sometime.
