Two huge Cardinal issues: Terrible at bats with runners on and weak defense.
Kid in Springfield who drove in 75 runs in 100 starts on a lousy team, more walks than strikeouts and an .880-plus OPS and he’s a Gold Glover. He got one game. He’s going to move runners, drive in runs, get walks and make plays. Don’t see why he doesn’t get a longer look than four at bats and one game.August 27, 2020 at 7:57 pm #137195bccran
ParticipantUnfortunately, a pretty boring team that’s hard to watch.

Participantwell pitching wasnt bad today but not good enough at times. Offense was just mediocre at best. Outside of goldy, nobody is really consistent. Miller has had his moments but when we just need simple contact, he cant do it. Overall watching this offense is like pulling teeth. But there is tomorrow.
August 27, 2020 at 8:05 pm #137197Agree Willie. I understand that this club was built on pitching and defense. However, I was hopeful the front office would provide at least a league average offense. To this point, the offense has proven to rank just above the bottom quartile of the NL.
August 27, 2020 at 8:13 pm #137200Bummer.
But we’re just tired. Shildt is playing the long game. It’s the tortoise and the hair. We are the tortoise.
I like this team, and I foresee October baseball.

ParticipantOkay, Tinky. Good attitude. What outside of pitching do you like about this team?
August 27, 2020 at 8:23 pm #137204
stlcard25ParticipantTo go 2-3 in 5 home games against the Royals and Pirates is horrid. I was expecting at least 4-1. You can’t play this badly against the dregs of the schedule and hope that you can make it up when you play real teams.
August 27, 2020 at 9:00 pm #137214Pathetic again and this is a .500 team at best but when you do nothing to help the offense this is the result.
Fits with the entire MLB debacle for the year.
August 27, 2020 at 9:28 pm #137215Could have been worse…….if the cubbies had swept us. So as it is, we only lose one measly game tonight to our arch rivals. I know it is what it is, but you just know if these two games today had been slated to go the traditional 9 frames instead of 7, we split and maybe even sweep this twin bill. I remain bullish in regards to our youngsters. Yes, bumps will be encountered along the way, but I still think we’re in for quite a ride this season.
August 27, 2020 at 9:51 pm #137217I was hopeful the front office would provide at least a league average offense.
This team will finish near .500 with this lineup because of pitching, back into the playoffs and the front office will pat themselves on the and do the same old nothing this coming off season because the team made the playoffs. Wash, rinse repeat.
August 27, 2020 at 10:00 pm #137219Pugs, I love your attitude and agree that this season may be special, in a good way, at the end.

ParticipantWe have the makings of a middle of the order with Goldy, DeJong, and Carlson. They need to be clutch.
Can’t have AAA player Schrock at the plate with runners in scoring position in a key late inning situation with DeJong available on the bench. That didn’t make any sense.

Or even subbing for O’Neill. I think that one really speaks volumes as to how the organization thinks of him. Which is too bad, as I think he is due to have a change in luck before long. That change may need to happen with another team.
August 28, 2020 at 8:55 am #137234I know of a few college teams here in the SEC who could beat the Pirates on a regular basis. Getting swept by them at home is ridiculous.
The Cardinals are weird sometimes though. We might turn around and sweep the Indians this weekend. You never know about baseball.
August 28, 2020 at 10:08 am #137243bc, in addition to pitching I like the way Goldy, Yadi, Miller, and DeJong are swinging the bat. Carlson is struggling at the plate, but I believe he will get better, and he has been great in the field.
Our team OBP is .341, third highest in MLB. For the most part I like our approach at the plate, i.e., taking the ball to the opposite field when it’s pitched that way, moving runners over, aggressive base running (Bader especially), etc. We do need more clutch hitting with runners in scoring position though. Hopefully that will come. Obviously, we could use another big bat in the middle of the order to go along with DeJong and Goldy, but I doubt we’ll trade for anybody. Maybe Carlson can fill that void by the end of the year.
I don’t agree with every move Shildt makes, but overall I think he’s a plus manager. If we can just get into the playoffs, which I think we can, I believe we have a decent chance of making some noise in October.
August 28, 2020 at 10:20 am #137245Bad day for Miller in both phases of the game. What I do not understand about him is that pitchers seem to usually start him off with a fastball on the outer half of the plate, and he never jumps on it. From what I saw of him in those games in Chicago, he has great power the other way. He has been taking that ball on the outer half that he should be putting in play to the left side of the field. Then he is swinging at stuff down and in, that you usually are not going to be able to do much with.
Carlson is playing what should be his AAA year at the major league level. He will eventually get there, but is obviously over-matched at this point. He is frustrated as some pitches he swings at you can tell he is thinking “Man, I should have crushed that ball”. Pitches at this level have a bit more movement on them.
Speaking of Miller, we have two of them of course. Whatever happened to the old system where when you had two guys with the same last name, they would put their first name initial on the back of the uniform. Like we had “L Smith” and “O Smith” in the ’80s. I liked that – thought it was cool. We should have an “A Miller” and “B Miller”. Somewhere along the line the first name initial was dropped. Boring….
August 28, 2020 at 10:30 am #137250Yesterday's 29th man for the #stlcards, RHP Seth Elledge, was returned to the Springfield alternate camp after the twin bill. The 24-year old did not pitch in either loss to the Pirates. pic.twitter.com/FSJ9B3iWcu

ParticipantWatching Carlson is a work in process. He’s got great plate presence for a youngster, and is going to be a fine player. As he matures, a Goldy-Carlson-DeJong MOTO is going to be fine. Can’t wait for Gorman to get here as well. It will be a special MOTO. Best in years.
August 28, 2020 at 10:39 am #137256I was just on JOCK 98.7 Radio in Springfield this morning and was asked if Gorman is losing a year of development. I agreed. He is down in Summer Camp, facing the same few pitchers over and over. In an ideal year, he would have followed Carlson’s basic model. Have a strong season in Double-A, get some late-season Triple-A experience and be at least close to helping out in the majors in early 2021. As it is, I can’t see him with St. Louis until later in 2021 at the very best. But that is one reality of what COVID caused.
August 28, 2020 at 10:52 am #137259bccran
ParticipantI’ll take the latter part of 2021 for Carlson. That’ll be fine. It would really help if high ceiling O’Neill started coming on strong this year and next, though. Settle into the MOTO. He’s a teaser right now.
August 28, 2020 at 11:33 am #137263Yeah, COVID has possibly stunted the growth some of both Carlson and Gorman. I would have preferred Dylan at AAA all year, with him joining the big club in ’21 and Gorman basically taking his spot in Memphis’ order. Then Gorman ticketed for 2022 with the Cardinals.
As it is we had to rush Carlson probably a half-season to season early. That is especially disheartening in this age of limited player control, as he might end up doing the Pujols thing and jump after the shiniest object put in front of him later in the decade, although unlike Albert he should be in his prime production years.
August 28, 2020 at 11:53 am #137264I would imagine that Winter ball will have more players available. Both MLB players who played a shortened season, and minor leaguers/prospects trying to shake off the rust will play.
Also hope MLB has a fall league with full teams of prospects.
August 28, 2020 at 12:38 pm #137267I hope you are right, C27. But unless the virus is under control, those winter leagues may not play, either. And even if they do, unless they change their rules, they only allow a few non-natives per team. They also fire them at will.
As far as the AFL goes, in a normal year, we would already be talking about the schedule and the players invited. Every week there is no news decreases my level of optimism the AFL will be played in 2020.
My realistic hope is reduced to an instructional camp.
