I don’t understand taking Flaherty out after 41 pitches? Unless trainers or Schildt saw something they didn’t like?
He was really laboring plus this was his first outing in several weeks.

It would really be nice to get into that Cub bullpen today. Not only impact them today but for the next several days.
Would have been another run if they had correctly challenged the leadoff double. O’Neill is on 2nd with one out.
Watching the game with the Cubs broadcasters on, and they are also surprised the Cards did not challenge. They said he was definitely safe, and commented that you do not lose anything from a challenge so why not do it? 7 inning game too, so even more important.
Gut check time. The #stlcards have 11 more innings to get through today. They cannot afford to burn through two starting pitchers in the first three innings.

Gomber gets out of it by the skin of his teeth. That’s two dodged bullets in a row, both of which were their own fault.

You are right Brian. We need guys who can give us innings.
The Cards have managed to go through two pitchers while the Cubs get a bad start that ends up outlasting the Cards duo. Not good for the second game.
Yeah, we need to be getting 4 innings from these starters in DHs. This business of burning through 4-5 pitchers in a 7 inning game is ridiculous. Got to be phasing out the “opener” mentality.
Okay, we have done enough here. Let’s save it for game 2. Frustrating to lose a game by 1 run and 3 runs, then win by 8. Let’s hope the late game does not end up 2-1 or something like that (unless it is in our favor).
Well, the offense has looked much better today. Let’s hope there are enough arms to get through both games.
Question: Do the Cardinals have a position player who can toss an inning or two in an emergency situation (ala Whitey using Oquendo or TLR using Aaron Miles)?
The Cubs have pitching issues, too. Pretty amazing the Cards managed to beat Hendricks what seems like a week ago.

Dunno. On the broadcast, they speculated that by getting Gant out of there, maybe be could come back in G2.
Hopefully Sanchez is our last pitcher for game 1. Need someone ready for game 2. No idea what to expect out of Oviedo. I have high hopes for him in the future but did not expect him to be starting in August of 2020.
I dont see us running out of pitchers with 17 (12 relievers). We could easily run out of quality pitchers though.

Interesting speculation. But the real question of course, is why on earth waste Gant with a 5-run lead and the bases empty? I’ll bet dollars to doughnuts they’ll wish they had him available for game 2.
And no, we do NOT want to use a reliever in both ends of a doubleheader. Stupid, stupid idea. Particularly with the 3-batter minimum. And most particularly with Gant, who we may recall was overused by Shildt early last year, and so useless in the second half and September that he was left off the playoff roster.
Shildt deserves credit for bringing in Gomber to face Happ very early in the game. Full marks for that move. But his usage of Gant, both today and two days ago verges on managerial malfeasance.
