The fact that Murphy and Harper are in their walk years is more of a reason for the Nationals to be sellers not a reason to go for it. What they could get for those 2 compared to what we could get for Holland and Norris is night and day.
A large market team with a generational player who is about to leave is not going to sell. They are going to go for it. I’m not saying they will be successful but that is what they will do.
The Nats also benefit a bit from media bias because most “experts” assume the Braves and Phillies will wilt while they assume the Cubs will go on a tear like last year. That is why the Nats and Cards are viewed differently.
July 3, 2018 at 9:58 am #58946I would also add that I don’t have any bias against Pham. I’m just not optimistic about his future and I think we should see what we can get for him while he can. Plus, I’d really like to see what Bader can do in CF and O’Neill can do in RF.

Only a total Phammite thinks he was one of the top 5-10 players in MLB last season.Total nonsense.
2017 ranks for Pham overall in MLB:
OPS+ 11th
OPS 16th
BA 17thMaybe you were right that he technically wasn’t top 10, he was #11. But I think that goes more to show that your jaded view of him is clouding the reality of what he was last year.
Of the 10 players that had a better OPS+, Pham had a better BA than 4 of them. He had more SB than 9 of them (8 by more than 10 SBs). 8 of them had more HRs, which goes to show that a lot of their OPS was HR driven.
He was also one of the top LFs defensively, if you rely on the metrics.

stlcard25ParticipantTo take it a step further, I said “year,” not season.
May 5, 2017 (when Pham was called back up) to May 5, 2018:
.310/.417/.524 (155 wRC+). That’s 8th in the league. Adding in his plus defense during that time and he’s at about 8 WAR for the year. How many players were above that in that span?

ParticipantI’ve said this before…. Pham’s recent slide isn’t this club’s biggest problem by a long shot.
July 3, 2018 at 10:43 am #58962It may not be the biggest problem but it has made the offense pretty weak. It will be nice if Carpenter, Ozuna and Pham gets it going at the same time. That’s when opposing teams will be very scared.
July 3, 2018 at 10:48 am #58965To also look at only WAR for 2017, Pham ranked 11th (tied with Kris Bryant).
July 3, 2018 at 10:56 am #58967The offense was already weak…it seems about the same to me…Carp and Ozuna rise while Pham and Gyorko fade
Yadi stays pretty solid, but that lost month pushed us down a bit…but Munoz helped ease a bit of that along with Pena… DeJong being out is a killer…JMart has been solid for the most part and Wong and Fowler have been consistently down
so at the moment:
Carp +
Ozuna +
Pham –
Gyorko –
Yadi =
JMart =
Wong –
Fowler –Munoz, Bader, Pena, Oneill, Garcia all have had ups and downs in their limited time…so = for all of them
Getting another + offensive direction from DeJong and maybe Pham coming around…maybe not to 2017 height level but at least directionally up from this big slump is a fine projection…should provide us with a bump to the offense
add in Wong getting back to .210-.220 hopefully and Gyorko at least coming back around a little…as well as maybe a at added and the offense shoudl be just fine
July 3, 2018 at 3:38 pm #58987I admit i don`t like Pham.I have always said that Pham is nothing more than a average player who had a “career” partial season LAST YEAR.THere has never been any outstanding skill of his that has made me change my mind.I think Bader can put up the same numbers as Pham and can play defense better and steal just as many bases.Plus Bader is 6 years younger without the injury/eye issues/bad attitude.Since Fowler is virtually untradeable ( please Mo get Fowler gone soon).Pham is the logical choice to trade IMHO.
