Euro, thanks for doing the leg work. I still wonder if Carpenter’s declining defense is accurately reflected in career stats, but they are what they are. Based on this, 667’s algebra is correct.

(Am I making another debatable assumption in saying “declining” defense?)

Brian, another thing is as a grabbed the numbers, it was eye catching that Gyorko’s rating at 3B this year is currently at 31.2, compared to his much lower career number listed above. So his ascending proficiency at 3B would further support slotting him there. A lot of ways to slice and dice this.

Another factor I mentioned above that should be taken into account in a purely mathematical/theoretical analysis is the weighted average or expected distribution of fielding chances for both positions in a particular game. That of course would vary by opponent, starting pitcher, etc.

And if Gyorko is getting better at third while Carpenter is getting worse, that gap increases even faster.

Flaherty looking strong after 6. He has 88 pitches. Score 4-1.

Lyons and Hicks take care of the 7th. 4-1 still.

Hicks 2 outs on 3 pitches. I’m sending him back out for the 8th, but I’m also not the manager.

Regarding Fowler’s knee, I just heard “negative” and “day-to-day” from the Pirates’ TV broadcaster. I assume he was talking about x-rays.

    BHC, seems like a no-brainer.

Hicks handles the 8th, still 4-1.

I would never wish injury on anyone, but at this point, we might have been better off if Fowler had been placed on the DL. It would have removed the temptation for Matheny to put him in the lineup. Dexter could use the time away kind of like Holland. Alas, it sounds like day to day.

Norris closes out the 4-1 win for Flaherty and the Cards. The team stops their three-game losing skid and ties the series at one game apiece. St. Louis is now 27-22.

Great work by Hicks and Norris. Do we have confidence in anyone else in the bullpen currently? Maybe Gant can become our 7th inning guy.

Norris with the no-drama save. Pretty much a boring win at PNC. I’ll take it. Flaherty’s stock is going up.

Nice game by the pitchers today and enough offense.
