that is the average number of strikeouts through 5 games. Simply amazes me how many wasted outs this team has each game. Really starting to think I owe John Mabry an apologize, it is clear that it wasn’t his approach at the plate.
Maybe. Or maybe just set everything else aside until a player finds his groove. Then, try paying more attention to launch angle and just making contact. It’s easier said than done. But that’s why we’re paying Shildty and his crew big money. This team is made up of highly talented position players and pitchers. I think they’re going to break out of what’s wrong at any time.
I thought Jeff Albert was brought in to focus the hitters on making contact. So far his results have been abysmal.
Focus on launch angle vs. just making contact?
I know the game has changed, but this is spot on. However, just horrible results with this. Would love to see guys look opposite field and cut down on the big swing when needed.
There was a recent retrosimba piece on Harry Caray and it linked the box score to our 14 inning opening day loss to the Pirates in 1969.
The marathon took all of 3 hours and 19 minutes to play, about what a typical 9 inning game takes today, and the Redbirds struck out only 3 times. Bob Gibson and friends struck out 12 Bucs, and walked none, but still lost.
I still recall listening to that one as kid , and being disappointed. I kind of sensed the season would not be the same as the previous two, with the sudden trade of Orlando Cepeda, and rumors of discontent on the club.
well to be fair to the new hitting coach, its hard to fix the way these guys have been hitting in just a short time. the cardinals have set their season strikeout records by their batters over each of the last 4 years I believe or something like that. one of the ways to get players to focus on contact is to have more hit and runs or even bunting more. of course you need to practice those things first to do them in a game. im hopeful the team will get better but its hard to reverse things as soon as we would like. can only take it one game at a time.
Even Goldschmidt has struck out 9 times already. Since we are his new team, I think the trying too hard might apply to him now, but he has to cut down on the K’s which I believe he will do.
I haven’t seen this kind of strike out rate since my senior high dances back in the day…..good ole’ Pugs did connect every blue moon or so though.
I wonder how much of the early strikeouts are due to random bad luck, how much is due to the hitters adjusting to Jeff Albert, and how much is due to bad approach/contact skills? For example, I would expect Carpenter and Goldschmidt to improve due to their track record, but Ozuna might not (or take much longer to do so) if he is injured. Guys like Bader and DeJong have always struggled with strikeouts, so they may not improve much. On the other hand, they are still young so maybe they will? I think it’s still too early to overreact but it’s definitely something to monitor.
