People sound as if they think there is one idealized standard set of criteria against which every position players is to be measured, apples to apples. That is nonsense and reeks of a fantasy ball approach imposed upon brick and mortar baseball. There are 7 defensive positions besides the battery, each with its requirements and role within the whole defense. There are 9 slots in the batting order, with various requirements. A leadoff hitter is a very different thing than a cleanup hitter, and a good one of either would likely suck at the other, and a team needs an effective example of each. A first baseman needs certain abilities and a center fielder needs others. Lack of a ML caliber left side arm is a factor for some positions and not for others. A player needs to be measured against the sets of criteria which applies to defensive and offensive roles which he might reasonably be able and called upon to fill.
