I looked up Ozzie Smith’s rookie year and he had 3.1 bWAR, mostly due to defense. Ozzie was 23 and Masyn will be a year younger than that in 2024.
So he is being given a lot of responsibility for someone that young – starting shortstop on a club expected to win, “or else!”. It seems a little odd that management has handed down this “win or else” edict for next year and are bringing in veteran pitchers and going with the vets at catcher, first and third. I would think you would install Edman as next year’s shortstop, with the plan being to have Winn take over in ’25. Go with Carlson in center, with possibly Scott taking over in ’25.
At any rate, I think Winn will end up on the positive side on defense next year, if he lasts the year out in the big leagues. His offense will probably take a few years to get untracked. But it won’t surprise me to see a few 5 and 6 WARs from him once he hits the mid-to-late 20s in age.
