St. Louis Cardinals release

The St. Louis Cardinals today (Friday, July 5) announced their selections for Minor League Player and Pitcher of the Month for June, with Palm Beach Cardinals (A) outfielder Chase Davis and Springfield Cardinals (AA) left-handed starting pitcher Quinn Mathews taking home the honors.

Chase Davis

Davis, 22, led all qualified Cardinals minor leaguers in OPS (1.147), on-base pct. (.464), slugging pct. (.683), extra-base hits (12) and RBI (23), while also ranking among the leaders in batting average (.333, 4th), home runs (5, T3rd), walks (17, 2nd), runs (16, 5th), and total bases (43, T5th).  The left-handed batter reached safely in 18 of his 20 games played and recorded an RBI in 13 games, including a season-high 5 RBI vs. St. Lucie on June 28.  It is Davis’ first career organizational Minor League Player of the Month award selection.

“In June, Chase led the league in on-base percentage, slugging and OPS, hitting five home runs in 20 games, helping the Palm Beach Cardinals win the first half of the FSL East Division and a playoff berth,” said Cardinals Assistant GM & Director of Player Development Gary LaRocque.

The 6’1, Sacramento native was selected in the 1st round (21st overall) of the 2023 MLB Draft following his junior year out of Arizona, where he finished his career with the third-most home runs in school history.  He is currently rated as the 6th best prospect in the Cardinals organization by Baseball America, and leads Palm Beach on the season with 24 XBH and 40 RBI.  Davis was also recognized as the Florida State League Player of the Week from June 10-16.

Quinn Mathews

Mathews, 23, posted a 3-0 record with a 2.10 ERA (7 ER/30.0 IP), 0.80 WHIP with 37 strikeouts and just 15 hits allowed across five starts.  He made four consecutive quality starts at High-A Peoria to begin the month before being promoted to Double-A Springfield where he allowed just one hit over 5.1 innings in a no-decision on June 30.  He also tallied his third double-digit strikeout performance of the season, punching out 11 (with no walks) versus South Bend on June 16.  The 6’4”, southpaw was named to the National League All-Star Futures Game roster on July 2.

“Before Quinn’s promotion to Springfield in late June, his month was highlighted by four quality starts in Peoria, 24.2 innings, seven earned runs, six walks and 34 strikeouts,” stated LaRocque.

Ranked as the 98th overall prospect by Baseball America in its latest midseason update, Mathews was selected in the 4th round of the 2023 MLB Draft out of Stanford, where he was named the 2023 Pac-12 Pitcher of the Year and ranked second in Division I with 158 strikeouts.  Overall this season, Mathews is 6-2 in 14 starts across three different levels with a 2.03 ERA, 0.78 WHIP and 113 strikeouts (2nd-most in MiLB).

After also being selected in April of this year, Mathews becomes the third pitcher ever to take home Cardinals Minor League Pitcher of the Month honors twice in his first professional season, joining left-hander Rick Ankiel (May & June 1998) and right-hander Max Rajcic (June & August 2023).

Brian Walton’s take

Congratulations to the winners. In The Cardinal Nation’s earlier analysis and announcements, Davis was also our choice as the June Pitcher of the Month.

However, Mathews and his 2.10 ERA did not make our list of finalists. The lefty is clearly the system’s hottest prospect, ranked third in our monthly organizational rankings. Yet, others performed better. Specifically, five other qualifying pitchers registered ERAs under 2.00 in June, including our selection, Keiverson Ramirez, at 1.00.

Non-finalist pitchers with June ERAs comparable to Mathews are Michael McGreevy (Memphis) at 2.12, Ian Bedell (Springfield) at 2.20 and Ixan Henderson (Palm Beach) at 2.38. Had we raised our ERA bar above 2.00, this trio would have been considered alongside Mathews.
