St. Louis Cardinals press release
The St. Louis Cardinals announced today (Thursday) the signing of Zach Jackson, their sixth round draft pick from the 2017 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
Jackson is a 6-foot-3, 215 lb. catcher out of Winter Haven (Fla.) High School. After moving from Haines City (Fla.) High School, the backstop batted .441 with nine home runs and 26 RBI in 95 plate appearances as a senior. He originally signed a letter of intent to attend the University of Florida.
The team also announced they have agreed to terms with Jim Voyles (38th Round), a right-handed pitcher from Florida State University. The 6-foot-7, 205 lb. senior reliever was recently pitching for the Seminoles in the College World Series.
The Cardinals have until July 7 at 4:00 p.m. CT, to sign their selections from the 2017 MLB First-Year Player Draft.
Brian Walton’s take
Jackson’s agreement, for $400,000, is $156,500 over the slot value for the pick of $243,500. To date, this is the highest over-slot amount the Cardinals have given any of their 2017 draftees. Overall, the club has about $400,000 potential excess budget to use on convincing others to sign. Full draft class financial details can be found at The Cardinal Nation’s members message board ($).
Jackson’s initial team assignment has not been announced, but he will likely join Voyles at the rookie-level Gulf Coast League.
In addition to these two, fourth rounder Kramer Robertson tweeted out a photo of him signing his Cardinals contract on Wednesday evening. The LSU senior shortstop reportedly agreed to a $150,000 bonus, with the excess making up about $275,000 of the above-mentioned $400,000 cushion.
Look for the Cardinals to announce Robertson’s signing once he passes his physical.
Not including Robertson, the Cardinals have officially announced the signing of 31 of their 38 2017 draftees.
