Cardinals Minor League Notebook – May 12, 2024

On Saturday, the St. Louis Cardinals system went 3-2. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Palm Beach RH Jose Davila, tossed six scoreless innings on three hits. Other standouts include Andre Pallante, Thomas Saggese, Mike Antico and Brody Moore.

Memphis 3, Norfolk 2

The Memphis Redbirds (19-18) edged the Norfolk Tides (19-19, BAL) 3-2 on Saturday at AutoZone Park.  Starter Andre Pallante threw five innings, allowing one run on four hits while walking two and striking out two.

The Tides struck first in the top of the third with a groundout into a double play that brought home a run.

Thomas Saggese responded with a bomb to left field that tied the game at one apiece.

The Redbirds took the lead in the sixth with Nick Raposo’s RBI single to left field.

Memphis added an insurance run in the seventh with Luken Baker’s blast to center.

An eighth-inning sacrifice fly yielded by reliever Ryan Loutos allowed the Tides to bring the game within one, but they could not capitalize further.

In his Memphis debut, Alex Cornwell earned the win, pitching two innings, allowing no runs on one hit while walking and striking out one.  Loutos earned his fourth save, throwing two innings, yielding one run on one hit while walking two and striking out one.  The Cardinals gave up two runs on six hits while walking five and striking out four.

Baker went 1-for-3, a homer, a walk, an RBI, and scored once.  Saggese was 2-for-4 with a home run, an RBI, and a run scored.  Alfonso Rivas III was 2-for-4 with a run scored.  Springfield totaled three runs on 12 hits with three walks and four strikeouts while going 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position.

Sunday’s game: vs. Norfolk, RHP Adam Kloffenstein (0-4, 5.35) vs. Cade Povich LHP (3-1, 1.11) 1:05 CT.

Springfield 5 at NW Arkansas 6 (11 innings)

The Springfield Cardinals (20-11) lost a close one to the NW Arkansas Naturals (15-15, KCR) 6-5 in 11 innings on Saturday at Arvest Ballpark.  Starter Ian Bedell threw five innings, allowing five runs on seven hits while walking two and striking out six.

Mike Antico drove one deep on the game’s third pitch to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.

The Cardinals added another run in the top of the third with R.J. Yeager’s RBI single.

The Naturals came back in the bottom of the third with a sacrifice fly, an RBI fielder choice, and a three-run bomb.

Springfield cut the deficit to one in the fourth with Jeremy Rivas’s RBI single and Jacob Buchberger’s RBI groundout.

Matt Lloyd’s sacrifice fly in the eighth tied the game at five.

Matt Svanson came in to pitch the 11th and allowed an RBI walk off single.

Ryan Shreve threw three innings, allowing no runs on three hits while striking out four.  Andre Granillo pitched two innings, yielding no runs and no hits while walking one and striking out four.  Svanson took his first loss this season, pitching 1/3 of an inning, giving up one run, none earned, on one hit while striking out one.  The Cardinals allowed six runs, five earned on 11 hits while walking three and striking out 15.

Antico went 2-for-5 with a homer, a double, an RBI, and two runs scored.  Rivas was 1-for-4 with a walk, an RBI, and scored once.  Buchberger went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.  Springfield totaled five runs on nine hits with three walks and eight strikeouts.

Sunday’s game: at NW Arkansas, RHP Tink Hence (3-1, 3.60) vs. Noah Cameron LHP (2-1, 2.97) 2:05 CT.

Peoria 6 at Beloit 3

The Peoria Chiefs (11-21) defeated the Beloit Sky Carp (17-14, MIA) 6-3 on Saturday at ABC Supply Stadium.  Starter Brycen Mautz pitched four innings, allowing two runs on two hits while walking three and striking out six.

The Chiefs opened the scoring in the first with Leonardo Bernal’s bases-loaded hit by pitch, and they added insurance when the opposing pitcher balked in a run.  Brody Moore’s three-RBI double cleared the bases and William Sullivan’s RBI single drove in Moore to make it 6-0.

The Sky Carp pulled closer in the third with a two-RBI double. A solo home run from Beloit in the sixth made the score 6-3.

Dionys Rodriguez earned his first win this season, pitching three innings while allowing one run on two hits while striking out four.  Nathaneal Heredia threw two innings, giving up no runs on one hit while walking two and striking out two to earn his first save this season.  Peoria yielded three runs on five hits while walking five and striking out 12.

Moore went 1-for-3 with a double, a walk, three RBI, and a run scored.  Bernal was 2-for-3 with a double, an HBP, an RBI, and scored once.  Sullivan went 1-for-4 with an RBI.  The Chiefs totaled six runs on five hits with three walks. Leadoff man Zach Levenson went 0-for-5 with four of Peoria’s 17 strikeouts.

Joshua Baez stole his 11th base this season while Bernal was caught stealing and Dakota Harris was picked off.

Sunday’s game: at Beloit, LHP Cooper Hjerpe (0-1, 5.28) vs. Alex Williams RHP (1-1, 7.00) 1:05 CT.

Palm Beach 2 at Jupiter 0

The Palm Beach Cardinals (18-14) shut out the Jupiter Hammerheads (20-12, MIA) on Saturday at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.  Starter Jose Davila earned his second win this season, throwing six innings, and allowing no runs on three hits while walking two and striking out two.

The Cardinals struck first in the sixth with Kade Kretzschmar’s sacrifice fly that drove in Johnfrank Salazar.

Palm Beach added an insurance run when the opposing pitcher balked in the eighth to allow Sammy Hernandez to score.

Miguel Villarroel went 3-for-3 with a walk.  Kretzschmar was 1-for-2 with an RBI and an HBP.  Salazar hit 1-for-4 with a run scored.  The Cardinals totaled two runs on five hits with two walks and 11 strikeouts.

Gustavo Rodriguez earned his third save this season, pitching three innings, and allowing no runs on three hits while striking out two.  Palm Beach gave up no runs on six hits while walking two and striking out four.

Sunday’s game: at Jupiter, RH Chen-Wei Lin (2-2, 1.65) vs. Jake Brooks RHP (3-0, 1.04) 11:00 CT.

FCL Cardinals 0 at FCL Houston 2

The Florida Complex League Cardinals (4-3) were shut out on one hit by the Astros (1-4, HOU) 2-0 on Saturday at CACTI Park of the Palm Beaches Complex.  Starter Hunter Kublick took his first loss this season, pitching four innings, allowing two runs on two hits while walking none and striking out six.

Kublick allowed a two-run homer in the third which represented the only and winning runs.

Hunter Hayes threw two innings, allowing no runs and no hits while walking one and striking out two.  Samuel Fabian pitched two innings, giving up no runs on a hit while striking out four.  The Cardinals yielded two runs on five hits while walking one and striking out 12.

Jonathan Mejia went 1-1 with the only hit tallied by the Cardinals in Saturday’s game, but he was replaced in the bottom of the second.  Felix Taveras went 0-for-3 with a walk and was the only player with more than one at-bat who did not strike out.  The Cardinals totaled one hit with three walks and 14 strikeouts.

Taveras stole his second bag this season, and in the field, Kublick and Arfeni Batista committed a throwing error.

Sunday and Monday are off days for the FCL Cardinals.
