Cardinals Minor League Notebook – June 7, 2022

The St. Louis Cardinals system went 0-2 on Monday. The Florida Complex League and Dominican Summer League began their seasons. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day is Lizandro Espinoza, who went 3-for-4 with a walk, a run scored and a stolen base.

FCL Cardinals 3 at FCL Astros Blue 4

The Cardinals (0-1) fell late to the Astros (1-0) on Monday at The Ballpark of the Palm Beaches. Starter Benjamin Arias tossed three innings with an unearned run surrendered. The right hander gave up five hits, two walks and struck out one.

The Cardinals scored all three of their runs in the first inning. Jeremy Ramos plated one with a single. Carlos Linarez brought in one and Felix Taveras singled to drive in one more to take a 3-0 lead.

Alejandro Cervantes threw two hitless innings with two strikeouts. Edwin Nunez pitched two scoreless innings with a walk given up. Augusto Calderon yielded three runs, two on wild pitches, with one hit and two walks surrendered in 1/3 of an inning. Omar Sanchez tossed the final 2/3 of an inning with a hit charged.

Lizandro Espinoza had three of the six Cardinal hits. He went 3-for-4 with a walk and a run scored. The Cardinals went 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position and struck out 13 times.

The Cardinals came out running in their first game. Luis Pino, Ramos, Taveras and Espinoza all stole a bag.

Tuesday’s game: vs. FCL Astros Blue, RHP Yonael Dominguez vs. TBA 11:00 CT

DSL Cardinals 3, DSL Nationals 10

The Cardinals (0-1) were wholloped by the Nationals (1-0) on Monday. Starter Darlin Saladin surrendered four runs, one earned, in three innings. The right-hander yielded four hits, two walks and received the loss. Miguel Martinez tossed two innings with four runs given up on three hits and a walk. The 19-year-old fanned three.

The three Cardinal runs came in the fourth through sixth innings. Yordalin Pena hit a solo shot in the fourth. Maycol Justo drove in one in the fifth and Jose Suarez blasted a solo homer in the sixth. By the end of the sixth inning, the score was 8-3.

Samuel Fabian and Junior Chirinos closed out the final four innings. Fabian threw two scoreless innings with three walks yielded and two strikeouts. Chirinos pitched two innings with two runs, one earned, given up on two hits and one strikeout.

Suarez went 2-for-4 with a home run. The right fielder had two of the five Cardinal hits. The lineup went 1-for-5 with runners in scoring position and struck out six times.

The Cardinals committed three errors, two from shortstop Jonathan Mejia. Pena recorded an outfield assist.
