Cardinals Minor League Notebook – June 23, 2024

The St. Louis Cardinals system was 2-3 on Saturday. The Palm Beach game originally scheduled for Friday, June 21 has been postponed and the game originally scheduled for Saturday, June 22 has been canceled. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day is Springfield 1B Matt Lloyd, who hit 2-for-3 with two walks, three RBI, and two runs scored.  Other standouts include Nick Dunn, Ian Bedell, Alex Cornwell, Dakota Harris, Jonathan Mejia, and Rainiel Rodriguez.

Memphis 1, Jacksonville 3

The Memphis Redbirds (38-36) fell to the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (34-40, MIA) 3-1 on Saturday at AutoZone Park.  Starter Ian Bedell threw five innings, allowing one run on four hits while walking two and striking out three in his Triple-A debut.

The Jumbo Shrimp struck first in the second with a solo home run to left-center field.

The Redbirds tied the game in the fifth with Nick Dunn’s solo moonshot to right field.

Packy Naughton replaced Bedell in the sixth, and in the seventh, he allowed a fielder’s choice that allowed a run to score and a sacrifice fly.

Naughton took his first loss this season, throwing two innings, and yielding two runs on two hits while striking out one.  Chris Roycroft threw two scoreless innings, giving up a walk while striking out one.  Memphis allowed three runs on six hits while walking three and striking out five.

Dunn went 2-for- 4 with a homer, a double, an RBI, and a run scored.  Matt Koperniak was 3-for-4 with a double.  Victor Scott II hit 1-for-4 with a walk.  The Redbirds totaled one run on eight hits with three walks and six strikeouts while hitting 0-for-14 with runners in scoring position and stranding 10 men on base.

Sunday’s game: vs. Jacksonville, LHP Nick Raquet (0-3, 4.84) vs. Valente Bellozo RHP (1-2, 5.66) 1:05 CT.

Springfield 5 at Corpus Christi 0

The Springfield Cardinals (36-32) shut out the Corpus Christi Hooks (26-42, HOU) on Saturday at Whataburger Field.  Starter Alex Cornwell earned his fourth win this season, throwing six scoreless innings, and allowing five hits and a walk while striking out seven.

Matt Lloyd’s RBI double and Jacob Buchberger’s RBI double in the fourth gave the Cardinals a 2-0 lead.

The Cardinals extended their lead in the fifth when Nathan Church grounded into a double play that allowed Jeremy Rivas to score.

Springfield added two insurance runs in the ninth on Lloyd’s two-run bomb to right-center field.

Lloyd went 2-for-3 with a homer, a double, two walks, three RBI, and two runs scored.  Buchberger was 2-for-3 with a double, two walks, and an RBI.  Rivas hit 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.  The Cardinals totaled five runs on seven hits with 11 walks and six strikeouts.  Every Springfield hitter reached safely at least once during Saturday’s game.

Ryan Shreve threw two scoreless innings, yielding a hit while striking out three.  Matt Svanson threw a scoreless inning, giving up no hits or walks while striking out one.  Springfield allowed no runs on six hits while walking one and striking out 11.

Sunday’s game: at Corpus Christi, TBD vs. Tyler Guilfoil RHP (3-6, 3.92) 5:05 CT.

Peoria 4 at Cedar Rapids 6

The Peoria Chiefs (0-2) were defeated by the Cedar Rapids Kernels (2-0, MIN) on Saturday at Rise 2 Greatness Field.  Starter Brycen Mautz took his eighth loss this season, throwing 4 1/3 innings, and allowing five runs on six hits while walking one and striking out four.

The Chiefs took an early lead with Dakota Harris’s RBI single and Brody Moore’s RBI double.

The Kernels earned one back with a solo shot in the second.

Cedar Rapids took the lead in the third with a two-run homer.

An RBI double and an RBI single extended their lead to 5-2 in the fifth.

Gustavo Rodriguez took over the mound in the fifth, and in the seventh, he allowed an RBI single that extended the Kernels’s lead to 6-2.

Peoria attempted to fight back with William Sullivan’s RBI single and Joshua Baez’s RBI single, but they fell short with a 6-4 loss.

Harris was 2-for-4 with a walk, an RBI, and two runs scored.  Moore hit 1-for-3 with a double, a walk, an RBI, and a run scored.  Sullivan went 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.  The Chiefs totaled four runs on nine hits with four walks and 11 strikeouts.

Rodriguez threw 2 2/3 innings, yielding one run, none earned, on three hits while striking out one.  Roy Garcia threw a scoreless inning, giving up no hits and three walks.  Peoria allowed six runs, five earned, on nine hits while walking four and striking out five.

Sunday’s game: at Cedar Rapids, LHP Quinn Mathews (2-1, 2.87) vs. John Klein RHP (4-1, 4.66) 1:05 CT.

Palm Beach at Tampa (canceled)

The Palm Beach Cardinals (0-0) matchup with the Tampa Tarpons (0-0, NYY) was canceled on Saturday due to rain.  Today’s game will not be made up, but the postponed game from Friday will be continued on Sunday as part of a doubleheader.

 

Sunday’s games: at Tampa, RHP Jose Davila (2-4, 4.83) vs. Luis Serna (2-3, 4.31) 11:00 CT (Game 1).  at Tampa, TBD vs. TBD (Game 2).

FCL Cardinals 3, FCL Marlins 10

The FCL Cardinals (13-21) were decimated by the FCL Marlins (24-9, MIA) by a score of 10-3 on Saturday at Roger Dean Stadium Complex.  Starter Ronny Oliver took his third loss this season, throwing 1/3 of an inning, and allowing four runs on three hits while walking three.

The Marlins took an early lead in the first with an RBI double, a double steal of second and home, a bases-loaded walk, and a wild pitch that allowed another runner to come home.

Alexander Beltre took over the mound in the third, and in the fourth, he allowed a two-RBI single to extend the Marlins’s lead to 6-0.

The Cardinals earned one back in the sixth with Jonathan Mejia’s RBI single.

Omar Yanes pitched the top of the eighth and yielded an RBI double.

A wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth allowed Mejia to cross the plate and Luis Pino’s RBI double cut the deficit down to four.

Juan Severino replaced Yanes in the ninth and gave up two RBI singles and an RBI groundout.

Randel Clemente threw two scoreless innings while striking out four.  Wilmer Ortega pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings and struck out two.  Samuel Fabian threw one scoreless inning and gave up two hits and one walk while striking out one.  The Cardinals allowed 10 runs, eight earned, on 11 hits while walking 10 and striking out 12.

Mejia went 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored.  Pino was 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI.  Felix Taveras hit 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored.  The Cardinals totaled three runs on nine hits with four walks and 12 strikeouts.

The FCL Cardinals are off on Sunday.

Monday’s game: vs. FCL Astros (16-17, HOU), TBD vs. TBD 11:00 CT.

DSL Cardinals 2, DSL Giants Black 1

The DSL Cardinals (7-7) narrowly beat the DSL Giants Black (12-3, SFG) 2-1 on Saturday at the St. Louis Cardinals DR Complex.  Starter Gabriel Chinchilla threw four innings, allowing three hits while walking one and striking out three.

The Cardinals struck first in the first with Rainiel Rodriguez’s RBI groundout that plated Yairo Padilla.

Bracewell Taveras extended the lead in the sixth with an RBI single.

Oliver Gonzalez replaced Chinchilla in the fifth, and in the seventh, he allowed two singles before being replaced by Giovanni Vargas who allowed an RBI groundout.

Gonzalez earned his first win this season, throwing 2 1/3 innings, and yielding one run on two hits while walking one and striking out two.  Taveras earned his first save this season, pitching a scoreless 2/3 of an inning, and giving up one hit.  The Cardinals allowed one run on six hits while walking two and striking out five.

Rodriguez was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.  Padilla hit 2-for-2 with a hit by pitch and a run scored.  Taveras went 1-for-3 with an RBI.  The Cardinals totaled two runs on six hits with a walk and four strikeouts.

The DSL Cardinals are off on Sunday.
