Cardinals Minor League Notebook – June 21, 2022

The St. Louis Cardinals system went 0-2 on Monday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day is shortstop Lizandro Espinoza who went 1-for-3 with a walk, an RBI and two runs scored for the FCL Cardinals. Other standouts include Benjamin Arias, Samuel Fabian and Yordalin Pena.

FCL Cardinals 2, FCL Astros Blue 9 (8 innings)

 The Florida Complex League Cardinals (7-4) fell to the Astros (3-8) after the game was suspended in the eighth inning due to lightning.

Starter Benjamin Arias tossed 3 1/3 scoreless innings with two hits, two walks and four strikeouts yielded. Yonael Dominguez threw 1 2/3 innings with a solo home run surrendered. Ettore Giulianelli took his first loss after he gave up two unearned runs.

The first Cardinal run came in the third inning off the bat of Lizandro Espinoza. The shortstop hit a solo shot, the first of his professional career. Luis Pino drove in Espinoza in the sixth inning.

Americo Lugo and Randel Clemente closed the last two innings. Lugo was charged with two unearned runs on three hits and two strikeouts. Clemente had a rough outing with four runs given up on five hits.

The Cardinals lineup had four hits, five walks and 11 strikeouts after batting for only seven innings. Espinoza went 1-for-2 with a walk, an RBI and two runs scored. Pino had two hits and Won-Bin Cho walked twice.

Cho and Espinoza both stole a bag. Raul Guzman, Javier Bolivar and Clemente all committed an error, leading to four unearned runs.

Tuesday’s game: at FCL Astros Blue, TBA vs. TBA 11:00 CT

DSL Cardinals 0 at DSL Cubs Blue 3

The Dominican Summer League Cardinals (5-7) were shut out by the Cubs Blue (5-7) on Monday morning.

Darlin Saladin pitched four innings with a run yielded on two hits and two walks. The right-hander fanned four and recorded his third loss. Samuel Fabian threw two hitless innings. Henry Gomez tossed one inning with an unearned run surrendered on three hits. Omar Yanez gave up a run in one inning.

The Cardinals recorded only four hits against the Cubs. Yordalin Pena went 2-for-4. Yaisel Ramos and Keshawn Rombley had a hit each. The lineup left all four runners on base and did not walk.

Pena stole a bag, the first of his professional career. The Cubs took six bases in six tries, all with Luis Rodriguez catching. Four came while Saladin was pitching.
