On Monday, the St. Louis Cardinals system was 1-1 with both games in rookie ball. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, DSL starter Jefferson Moran, threw one-hit ball for five shutout innings. Other standouts include Heriberto Caraballo, Yairo Padilla and Edward Guribe. We also set up Tuesday’s full system schedule.

Memphis – off
Memphis (36-33) just finished a road series at East Division rival Norfolk (35-34) (BAL) against whom they split the six-game set. The Redbirds were eliminated from contention for the first-half International League West Division title, claimed by Omaha (47-20) (KC). Memphis is “best of the rest” in the 10-team West Division, sitting in second place, 12 games back.
The Redbirds return home this week, hosting Jacksonville (MIA) before heading back on the road next week.
Tuesday’s game: vs Jacksonville (31-38), 12:05 pm CT, RH Nick Raquet (0-2, 5.19) vs. TBD
Springfield – off
It was a perfectly dreadful home series for the S-Cards (33-30) against fourth-place Northwest Arkansas (31-32) (KC) as Springfield was swept, going 0-6. The current losing skid of seven games caused the S-Cards to drop into second place in the Texas League North Division standings as the first-half games dwindle down to a precious few. Springfield is 1 ½ games behind Arkansas (SEA).
This upcoming week features the S-Cards traveling to last place (South) Corpus Christi (HOU).
Tuesday’s game: at Corpus Christi (24-39), 6:35 pm CT, RHP Edwin Nuñez (0-3, 5.91) vs RHP Tyler Guilfoil (3-6, 4.07)
Peoria – off
The sixth/last-place Chiefs compiled a strong home series last week versus fifth-place South Bend (27-36) (CHC), taking five of six contests. Although Peoria (25-38) has been eliminated from first-half contention, being 15 back of Wisconsin (MIL), they trail South Bend by just two games and can claw their way out of the Midwest League West Division cellar with a strong week at second-place Cedar Rapids (MIN). At the very least the Chiefs look to play spoiler against the Kernels which are one game away from elimination.
Tuesday’s game: at Cedar Rapids (36-26), 6:35 pm CT, RH Inohan Paniagua (5-3, 3.47) vs. TBD
Palm Beach – off
Palm Beach (35-28) split their six-game series at third-place Daytona (30-33) (CIN), dropping them into second place in the Florida State League East Division standings, a game behind Jupiter (MIA). Facing a magic number of three to stave off elimination, the Beach Birds head to Tampa (NYY) for the second stanza of a two-week road trip.
Tuesday’s game: at Tampa (23-40), 6:30 pm ET/5:30 pm CT, RH Gerardo Salas (2-4, 2.77) vs. TBD
FCL Cardinals 1 vs. FCL Mets 5
The fifth-place Florida Complex League Cardinals (12-18) never led in their Monday home game versus third-place FCL Mets (13-16), losing 5-1.
The long ball proved to be the Cardinals’ downfall as their hurlers served up three home runs accounting for four of the Mets’ five scores. Starter Yadiel Batista (L, 0-3) shut down his opponents the first time through the order but surrendered a two-run bomb to Mets centerfielder Simon Juan, the first of his two long balls on the day. Batista yielded four hits in five frames, striking out four and did not issue a free pass.
Yordy Herrera pitched around a one-out walk and two-out hit batsman for a scoreless sixth only to serve up a solo shot the next inning. Antoni Cuello permitted two tallies in his only inning of work on three hits overall, one of them being Juan’s second bomb. Juan Severino pitched a one-two-three ninth.
The home team was kept off the board until catcher Heriberto Caraballo led off the eighth with his second home run of 2024. The only other one of the team’s five hits to go for extra bases was a double by first baseman Yancel Guerrero, who went 1-for-4 with a strikeout.
Tuesday’s game: OFF
DSL Cardinals 7 at DSL Phillies 0 (7)
A Dominican Birds duo combined on a seven-frame one-hitter as the DSL Cardinals (4-6) soared past the DSL Phillies Red (4-5), 7-0, in seven innings. The victory, combined with a Nationals’ loss, lifts the Dominican Birds into tie with said Nationals for fifth in the Dominican Summer League Central Division standings, 6 ½ games behind the Giants Black. The Giants remain undefeated at 11-0 but must lose someday, don’t they?
The only hit permitted by starter Jefferson Moran (W, 1-0) during his five-inning stint was a double with two gone in the fourth. The 20-year-old issued two free passes with six ground- to four fly-ball outs along with three strikeouts.
Rookie Jesus Garcia tossed the last two innings, walking two and matching Moran’s three K’s.
The visitors got on the board immediately when designated hitter Edward Guribe lined a single to left, knocking in shortstop Yairo Padilla (single) and center fielder Facundo Velasquez (hit-by-pitch). Guribe added a triple to his two-bagger, going 2-for-3 with a base-on-balls, two runs scored and three RBI.
Eight of the nine in the Cardinals batting order either had a hit or scored a run or both. Padilla and third baseman Daniel Rojas co-led the 10-hit parade, both players with three hits. Padilla singled three times in five at bats and scored once from the top of the order and Rojas went 3-for-4 out of the nine hole. Second baseman Bracewell Taveras joined Guribe with two hits, his in four at bats, driving in one.
Padilla was also active on the basepaths, stealing three bases, half of the Dominican Birds’ six for the game. Rojas added two and Velasquez swiped his first bag of the season.
Defensively, Padilla committed a fielding bobble, his third miscue overall.
Tuesday’s game: vs fifth place (tie) Nationals (4-6), 11:00 am ET/10:00 am CT, RHS Keiverson Ramirez (0-0, 2.25)
