Cardinals Minor League Notebook – June 12, 2022

The St. Louis Cardinals went 5-0 on Saturday with every team taking a win except for Palm Beach who rained out. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day is FCL Cardinals 1B Francis Reynoso, who went 4-for-5 with four RBI and four runs scored. The 19-year-old was a single away from the cycle. Memphis SS Paul DeJong had two home runs and five RBI for the Redbirds.

Memphis 9, Durham 2

The Memphis Redbirds (34-25) topped the Durham Bulls (TB, 31-28) at AutoZone Park on Saturday. Jake Woodford went four innings with one run surrendered on three hits and four walks. The right-hander struck out four.

Thomas Parsons earned his fourth win after two innings pitched with one run yielded and two strikeouts.

Alec Burleson drove in a run in the first inning via sacrifice fly. In the third, Scott Hurst plated one and Ali Sánchez scored on a wild pitch in the fourth. Paul DeJong hit a solo shot in the fifth, his seventh of the season in Memphis.

Jacob Bosiokovic, Kyle Ryan and Kodi Whitley all pitched a scoreless inning. Bosiokovic gave up a hit and fanned one. Ryan was charged with two hits and Whitley yielded a walk.

The Redbirds closed out the game with four runs in the eighth. Luken Baker scored on a wild pitch. DeJong blasted his second homer of the game, a three run shot.

Memphis tallied seven hits and six walks. The lineup went 4-for-14 with runners in scoring position. DeJong had two home runs and five RBI. Cory Spangenberg and Evan Mendoza both had two hits.

The Redbirds came out running on Saturday night. Ben DeLuzio and Hurst both stole two bags. Mendoza also stole a base.

Sunday’s game: vs. Durham, LHP Connor Thomas (3-2, 4.07) vs. RHP Ryan Yarbrough, 2:05 CT

Springfield 8 at Midland 1

The Springfield Cardinals (22-34) defeated the Midland RockHounds (OAK, 26-30) on Saturday at Momentum Bank Ballpark. Connor Lunn and Garrett Williams both pitched two scoreless innings. Lunn surrendered one hit and fanned two. Williams had two perfect innings with four strikeouts.

The Cardinals scored five runs in the sixth inning. Chandler Redmond, Malcolm Nunez and Matt Koperniak all walked with the bases loaded. Delvin Pérez plated two with a single.

Edgar Escobar received his third win of the season after he pitched five solid innings with seven strikeouts. The right-hander gave up one run on three hits and a walk.

In the eighth, the Cardinals added on three more runs. Pérez walked with the bases loaded and Nunez scored on a balk. Masyn Winn brought in the final run with a sacrifice fly.

Springfield walked nine times and struck out eight times. Winn went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Nick Dunn had two hits with a run scored. Pérez recorded three RBI and stole his 12th bag of the year.

Sunday’s game: at Midland, RHP Michael McGreevy (2-1, 4.41) vs. LHP David Leal (0-2, 4.40), 2:00 CT

Peoria 5, Quad Cities 3

The Peoria Chiefs (25-31) edged the Quad Cities River Bandits (KC, 20-36) after a late comeback attempt from the opposition.

Zane Mills earned his first win in Peoria after six solid innings. The right-hander yielded two runs, one earned, on five hits and one walk. Nick Trogrlic-Iverson tossed two hitless innings with a walk and four strikeouts.

The Chiefs scored one run in both the first and second innings. Todd Lott drove in a run after he grounded into a double play. Carlos Soto hit his second home run of the year in the second.

Two more runs were added in the fifth after Mike Antico blasted a two-run shot, his sixth of the season. Thomas Francisco added an insurance run in the eighth with an RBI groundout.

Leonardo Taveras ran into some trouble in the ninth with a run, two hits and two walks given up in only 1/3 of an inning. Andre Granillo got out of the bases loaded jam and recorded his second save.

Antico went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. The center fielder has a 1.353 OPS in June. The lineup went 2-for-6 with runners in scoring position and recorded seven hits.

Noah Mendlinger stole his fifth bag of the season.

Palm Beach at Tampa postponed

Due to inclement weather, the Palm Beach at Tampa Tarpons contest was postponed and will be played as a doubleheader on Sunday.

Sunday’s games: at Tampa, RHP Bryan Pope (0-0, 3.63) / RHP Trent Baker (3-5, 2.90) vs. RHP Zach Messinger (0-3, 4.67) / TBA, 11:00 CT

FCL Cardinals 15 at FCL Marlins 1

The Cardinals (3-2) walloped the Marlins (2-3) at Roger Dean Stadium on Saturday. Wilmer Ortega tossed three scoreless innings with two hits given up and four strikeouts.

Augusto Calderon received his first win after a perfect inning pitched. Ludwin Jimenez threw two innings with a run surrendered on two hits, one walk and two strikeouts.

The Cardinals scored seven runs in the top of the first. Carlos Linarez and Edgardo Rodriguez both plated one with singles. Jeremy Ramos hit an RBI double and Samil De La Rosa drove in two with a single and a throwing error from the Marlins. Francis Reynoso hit an RBI triple and Lizandro Espinoza scored the last run of the first.

Reynoso blasted a three-run home run in the fifth, his first of 2022. In the eighth, Robin Heredia was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Reynoso came across again with a balk to make it 12-1 in the eighth. Jose Cordoba hit a two run shot and Luis Pino scored one in the ninth to increase the lead to 15-1.

Randel Clemente pitched a scoreless inning with two strikeouts. Alejandro Cervantes threw a scoreless inning with a hit given up with two strikeouts and Omar Sanchez tossed a scoreless ninth.

Reynoso, the ninth hitter in the lineup, went 4-for-5 with four RBI and four runs scored. The first baseman had two doubles, a triple and a home run. Linarez and Espinoza both had two hits with an RBI and a run scored each. The lineup recorded 15 hits and four walks.

Monday’s game: vs. FCL Marlins, TBA vs. TBA 11:00 CT (The Cardinals are off  Sunday)

DSL Cardinals 5, DSL Brewers (1) 4

The Cardinals (2-4) edged the Brewers (1-4) in a tight game on Saturday. Starter Henry Gomez tossed two innings with two runs given up on two hits and three walks. Bruno Lopez went two innings with six strikeouts and a run surrendered.

The Cardinals scored the first two runs in the second inning. Maycol Justo tripled to bring in two.

Diego Dominguez pitched 2 2/3 innings with one run yielded on four hits and two walks. The 17-year-old fanned two and recorded his first win. Esteban Contreras threw the final 2 1/3 innings and was charged with no runs. The right-hander struck out five and took the save.

The Cardinals took the lead after Yancel Guerrero hit a three-run blast in the sixth inning to make the score 5-3.

The lineup went 3-for-12 with runners in scoring position and struck out 13 times. Guerrero had two hits with three RBI and two runs scored. Justo had the other two RBI. The pitching staff fanned 14 batters but gave up eight walks.
