Cardinals Minor League Notebook – July 22, 2022

The St. Louis Cardinals system went 2-0 on Thursday as both rookie teams won. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, OF Luis Pino, went 2-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored for the FCL club. Other standouts include Jose Davila, Alexander Beltre and Luis Rodriguez.

Memphis Redbirds – Off

The Memphis Redbirds (50-40) are 4.5 games back of the Nashville Sounds in third place in the International League West.

Springfield Cardinals – Off

The Springfield Cardinals (10-8) are one game behind the Wichita Wind Surge in the Texas League North.

Peoria Chiefs – Off

The Peoria Chiefs (7-14) are eight games back of the South Bend Cubs in fifth place in the Midwest League West.

Palm Beach Cardinals – Off

The Palm Beach Cardinals (12-9) are in first place in the Florida State League East Division by one game.

FCL Cardinals 7, FCL Astros Blue 4

The Florida Complex League Cardinals (13-16) defeated the Astros Blue (6-24) at Roger Dean Stadium on Thursday.

Starter Jose Davila tossed six scoreless innings and yielded two hits, one walk and five strikeouts. The 19-year-old Venezuelan right-hander is no. 35 on The Cardinal Nation’s Cardinals Prospect List.

There were no runs on the board until Luis Pino blasted a two-run homer in the fifth, his second of the year. The 18-year-old, born in Cuba, is The Cardinal Nation’s 17th-ranked prospect.

The Cardinals used four different pitchers to close out the last three innings. Edwin Nunez gave up three runs, one earned, on a hit and a walk in 2/3 of an inning. Augusto Calderon recorded his second win after he threw a scoreless 1 1/3 innings with three strikeouts. Randel Clemente surrendered a run in 2/3 of an inning and Americo Lugo saved his first game of the year after he recorded the final out.

After the Astros scored three runs in the seventh, the Cardinals plated five in the eighth to retake the lead for good. Brandon Hernandez came across on an error to tie the game at 3-3. Tre Fletcher also scored on an error. Pino brought in two with a double and Adari Grant scored Pino to make the score 7-3.

Pino had two of the six Cardinals hits and scored four runs. The lineup went 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position but recorded four extra-base hits.

The defense was not great on Thursday afternoon for the Cardinals as they committed five errors. Hernandez had two, both fielding errors. Davila, Samil De La Rosa and Raul Guzman each committed one.

The Cardinals are 8.5 games behind the Nationals in the FCL East.

DSL Cardinals 4 at DSL Brewers2 2 (5 innings)

The Dominican Summer League Cardinals (19-17) topped the Brewers 2 (18-16) in a five-inning contest on Thursday.

Alexander Beltre went all five innings and surrendered two runs on six hits and one walk. The left-hander fanned three and earned his first win of the year.

The Cardinals scored all four runs in the third inning without a run-generating hit. Carlos Carmona, Miguel Vargas and Alejandro Loaiza all walked with the bases loaded. Carmona came across on a wild pitch.

Luis Rodriguez

The lineup recorded five hits and eight walks in only five innings. Luis Rodriguez was on base four times, going 2-for-2 with two walks and a run scored. Every Cardinal except Maycol Justo reached base at least once.

The Cardinals are 3.5 games behind first place Colorado in the DSL South.
