Cardinals Minor League Notebook – July 19, 2024

The St. Louis Cardinals system went 0-1 on Thursday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Andru Arthur, reached base in all four plate appearances. The center fielder and leadoff man had two singles, a hit-by-pitch, a home run, two RBI and two runs scored in the DSL Cards’ extra-inning loss.

Memphis Redbirds – All-Star Break

The Memphis Redbirds were off Thursday because of the All-Star Break.  The Redbirds will begin a three-game series at home against the Iowa Cubs (8-10, CHC) on Friday.

Friday’s game: vs. Iowa, RH Michael McGreevy (5-7, 4.70) vs. TBD 7:05 CT.

Springfield Cardinals – All-Star Break

On Thursday, the Springfield Cardinals (12-6) enjoyed their last day off during the All-Star Break.  The Cardinals will play on Friday at the Amarillo Sod Poodles (6-12, ARI) in a three-game series.

Friday’s game: at Amarillo, LH Quinn Mathews (0-0, 2.53 vs. TBD 7:05 CT.

Peoria Chiefs – All-Star Break

The Peoria Chiefs (12-9) were off Thursday due to the All-Star Break.  They will resume play on Friday at Dozer Park against the Beloit Sky Carp (10-11, MIA) in a three-game series.

Friday’s game: vs. Beloit, LHP Brycen Mautz (1-10, 5.92) vs. TBD 7:05 CT.

Palm Beach Cardinals – All-Star Break

The Palm Beach Cardinals (13-7) did not play on Thursday because of the All-Star Break.  They will begin a three-game series at the Daytona Tortugas (12-7, CIN) on Friday.

Friday’s game: at Daytona, RH Gerardo Salas (5-4, 2.65) vs. TBD 5:35 CT.

Florida Complex League Cardinals – off Thursday

The FCL Cardinals (18-32) were off Thursday.  They will return to the field on Friday at the FCL Mets in Port St. Lucie (22-28, NYM).

Friday’s game: at FCL Mets, RH Ronny Oliver (2-3, 4.86) vs. TBD 11:00 CT.

DSL Cardinals 6 at DSL Giants Black 7 (eight innings)

The Dominican Summer League Cardinals (15-17) blew an early lead against the DSL Giants Black (24-9, SFG) to lose 7-6 in extra innings on Thursday at the Academia De Béisbol Felipe Alou.  Starter Branneli Franco threw 4 1/3 innings, allowing four runs, one earned, on two hits while walking three and striking out seven.

The Cardinals struck first in the first with Rainiel Rodriguez’s RBI double, Bracewell Taveras’s RBI double, and Brayan Amoroso’s RBI single. Andru Arthur extended their lead to 5-0 with a two-run bomb to right field in the top of the second.

The Giants put one on the board in the bottom of the second with an RBI groundout. A throwing error by Franco allowed two runs to score in the third and an RBI single later in the inning brought the Giants to within one.

The Giants tied the game in the sixth when catcher Rodriguez allowed a passed ball on a strikeout with two outs in the inning. After the regulation seven innings, the score remained tied.

A dropped third strike allowed Rodriguez to come home in the top of the eighth to give the Cardinals a 6-5 lead.

An RBI double tied the game for the Giants and an RBI single walked it off in the bottom of the eighth.

Jesus Garcia took his first loss this season, throwing three innings, and yielding three runs, one earned on three hits while walking two and striking out three.  The Cardinals gave up seven runs, two earned, on five hits while walking five and striking out 10.

Arthur went 3-for-3 including a home run, two RBI, and two runs scored.  Rodriguez was 1-for-3 with a double, a walk, an RBI, and two runs scored.  Taveras hit 1-for-4 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored.  The Cardinals totaled six runs on six hits with five walks and seven strikeouts.

Friday’s game: vs. DSL White Sox (10-23, CWS), RH Oliver Gonzalez (2-0, 2.89) vs. TBD 10:00 CT.
