The St. Louis Cardinals system went 0-5 on Sunday as the pitching yielded 43 runs. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Springfield OF Justin Toerner, had three hits including a home run, a walk, four RBI and an outfield assist. Other standouts include Paul DeJong, Chase Pinder and Jake Burns.

The Memphis Redbirds (50-40) were topped by the Nashville Sounds (MIL, 54-35) at First Horizon Park on Sunday.
Matthew Liberatore tossed six innings and gave up five runs on nine hits and two walks. The left-hander fanned six.
The Redbirds scored five runs in the third inning. Ben DeLuzio plated two with a double and Paul DeJong brought across one. Luken Baker added another run with a double. In the fifth, DeJong hit a solo shot, his 14th for Memphis. Clint Coulter and Delvin Pérez hit back-to-back solo home runs in the sixth to take what looked to be a comfortable 8-1 lead.
However, Memphis yielded nine runs in the sixth through eighth innings – five charged to Liberatore and five to James Naile. The 29-year-old reliever surrendered five runs on four hits and two walks and took his third loss in Memphis.
DeJong is heating up with two hits, two RBI and two runs scored. Baker and Pérez both had two hits. The lineup went 4-for-8 with runners in scoring position.

Pérez, Irving Lopez and DeLuzio all stole a bag.
The Redbirds went 4-2 against first place Nashville this week and are 4.5 games back of the Sounds.

The Springfield Cardinals (10-8) were topped by the Tulsa Drillers (LAD, 7-11) at Hammons Field on Sunday night. Every Cardinals pitcher yielded at least one run.
The game was tied at 3-3 after the second inning. In the first, Matt Koperniak scored a run. Nick Raposo and Justin Toerner each plated a run in the second.
Michael McGreevy tossed just three innings and gave up three runs on three hits and two walks. Michael Brettell threw 1 2/3 innings and was charged with three runs. Johan Quezada pitched 1 1/3 innings and surrendered one run.
In the fifth, the Cardinals scored six runs to take a 9-7 lead. Nick Dunn doubled to plate one. Chase Pinder scored on an error and Roberto Baldoquin brought a run across. Raposo scored on a wild pitch and Justin Toerner hit a two-run homer, his second of the season. Toerner scored another run in the seventh and Pinder plated two.

The lead was lost as Leonardo Taveras yielded five runs in 1 1/3 innings. Domingo Robles took his fourth loss of the season and gave up four runs in the final 1 2/3 innings.
The Cardinals tried to stage a late comeback in the ninth inning. After Koperniak reached, Pinder hit a two-run home run, his eighth of the year. With the tying run at the plate, Malcom Nunez struck out and Chandler Redmond grounded into a double play.
The Springfield lineup recorded 16 hits and 11 walks but could not win the game. Toerner had three hits, one walk, four RBI and two runs scored. Pinder went 2-for-4 with two walks, two runs scored and four RBI. Dunn had two hits and four walks. The lineup went 7-for-20 with runners in scoring position.
Mike Antico took two bases for a total of 50 stolen bags between Peoria and Springfield and is 13-for-13 at Double-A. Toerner recorded an outfield assist.
Springfield went 4-2 against Tulsa this week and are one game back of first place Wichita.

The Peoria Chiefs (7-14) fell to the South Bend Cubs (CHC, 15-6) on Sunday at Dozer Park.
Starter Dionys Rodriguez tossed three innings with one run surrendered on three hits, one walk and three strikeouts. Nathanael Heredia pitched three innings with a run yielded on three hits. The left-hander fanned three and recorded his third loss.
After the Cubs scored one in the third, Brady Whalen plated Ramon Mendoza to tie the game at 1-1. South Bend scored a run in each of the fifth and eighth innings.
Chris Roycroft recorded a scoreless inning with one strikeout. Gianluca Dalatri yielded a run in the eighth inning and Colin Schmid pitched a scoreless ninth inning.
With the tying run at the plate in the ninth, the Chiefs struck out three times in three at-bats to end the game.
Mendoza had two hits, the only Chief with multiples. The lineup drew just one walk and went 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position.
The Chiefs went 2-4 against the Cubbies this week and are eight games back of first place.

Palm Beach 7, Lakeland 8 (Game 1, 7 innings)
The Palm Beach Cardinals (12-8) were edged by the Lakeland Flying Tigers (8-11) at Roger Dean Stadium on Sunday morning in Game 1 of a doubleheader.
Starter Alex Cornwell tossed four innings with six runs yielded on nine hits and one walk. The left-hander took his third loss of the season.
After the Flying Tigers scored four runs in the first, the Beach Birds plated one in each the second and third innings. Elijah Cabell hit a solo shot in the second, his fourth of the year. Lizandro Espinoza scored one in the third.
Bryan Pope pitched a scoreless two innings with three strikeouts. Chris Holba surrendered two runs in the seventh inning.
The Cardinals tried to stage a late comeback in the final two innings but fell short. In the sixth, Darlin Moquete, Leonardo Bernal and Mora each drove in a run but Lakeland added two more in the top of the seventh. In the home half, Thomas Francisco hit a two-run homer, his first in 2022 for Palm Beach, but the lineup could not score again.

The Cardinals went 2-for-8 with runners in scoring position. Bernal went 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Cabell went 1-for-2 with two walks, two runs scored and one RBI.
Cabell recorded an assist in left field.
Palm Beach 5, Lakeland 6 (Game 2, 8 innings)
The Palm Beach Cardinals (12-9) fell to the Lakeland Flying Tigers (DET, 9-11) at
Roger Dean Stadium in Game 2 of the Sunday doubleheader. This was a makeup game from Saturday, July 16th.
Inohan Paniagua tossed three innings and gave up three runs on six hits and two strikeouts. Jack Ralston recorded a scoreless two innings with two strikeouts.
After the Flying Tigers were up by three, the Beach Birds staged a late comeback, only to fall short again. In the seventh, Patrick Romeri plated two with a double. Sander Mora tied the game with an RBI double and the contest went into extra innings.
After Lakeland scored three in the top of the eighth, Palm Beach could only answer with two in the home half. Francisco plated two with an RBI double to make the score 6-5.
Gustavo Rodriguez pitched two scoreless innings and fanned three batters. Nelfri Contreras gave up three runs, two earned, on two hits and one walk in the eighth inning. The left-hander took his second loss this season.
The lineup went 6-for-11 with runners in scoring position and struck out 10 times in eight innings. Jake Burns went 2-for-2 with two walks and a run scored. Francisco and Romeri each plated two runs.
The Cardinals went 3-3 against the Tigers this week and are in first place by one game.
