Cardinals Minor League Notebook – July 14, 2024

The St. Louis Cardinals system went 4-2 on Saturday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, LH Pete Hansen, spun 7 2/3 scoreless innings with 10 strikeouts for Peoria. Other standouts include Quinn Mathews at the Futures Game, Nick Raposo, Bryan Torres, Brandon Komar and Leonel Sequera.

NL Futures 6 at AL Futures 1 (7 innings)

The National League Futures team topped the American League Futures 6-1 on Saturday at Globe Life Field.  The Cardinals’ representative, Quinn Mathews, threw a scoreless inning, allowing one hit while striking out two.

The NL took an early lead in the third with a solo shot to right-center. The visitors extended their lead to four in the top of the fourth with a bases-loaded walk, a bases-loaded hit by pitch, and a sacrifice fly.

The AL responded in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single.

A solo bomb in the top of the sixth gave the NL Futures that run back, making the score 5-1.

Mathews came in to pitch the bottom of the sixth when he forced the first batter to ground out, struck out the second batter, allowed a single to third, and struck out the final batter of the inning.

The visitors added one final run in the seventh with an RBI groundout to make it 6-1.

Memphis 7, Norfolk 12

The Memphis Redbirds’ (8-9) struggles continue with their fifth loss in their last six games, by 12-7 score to the Norfolk Tides (8-8, BAL) on Saturday at AutoZone Park.  Bullpen starter Victor Santos took his fifth loss this season, throwing 2 2/3 innings, and allowing nine runs on seven hits while walking four.

The Tides struck in the top of the first with a two-RBI single, a bases-loaded walk, an RBI forceout, and a sacrifice fly.

The Redbirds responded in the bottom of the first with Thomas Saggese’s RBI groundout.

Norfolk extended their lead to eight in the third with a grand slam.

In his Memphis debut, Benito Garcia took the mound after the grand slam, and in the top of the fourth, he allowed an RBI groundout and back-to-back homers to make the score 12-1.

Jared Young’s two-run blast in the bottom of the fourth cut the deficit down to single digits.

In the eighth, César Prieto’s solo longball and Nick Raposo’s three-run dinger made the score 12-7.

Young was 1-for-3 with a home run, a walk, two RBI, and two runs scored.  Raposo hit 2-for-4 with a homer, a double, three RBI, and a run scored.  Prieto went 1-for-4 with a homer, a walk, an RBI, and a run scored.  The Redbirds totaled seven runs on six hits with seven walks and six strikeouts.

Garcia threw 3 1/3 innings, yielding three runs on six hits while walking two and striking out one.  Nick Raquet pitched three scoreless innings, allowing three hits while striking out two.  Memphis allowed 12 runs on 16 hits while walking six and striking out three.

Sunday’s game: vs. Norfolk, RHP Gordon Graceffo (8-5, 3.86) vs. Brandon Young RHP (2-1, 3.78) 1:05 CT.

Springfield 10, Wichita 2

The Springfield Cardinals (11-6) destroyed the Wichita Wind Surge (5-12, MIN) 10-2 on Saturday at Hammons Field.  Starter Brandon Komar earned his third win this season, throwing six scoreless innings, and allowing one hit while striking out five.

Springfield took the lead with the first pitch of the game when Bryan Torres drove a solo shot to right-center field.

The Cardinals extended their lead in the third with Chandler Redmond’s three-run moonshot to right-center.

Torres’s two-RBI triple, Nathan Church’s RBI single, and Mike Antico’s RBI forceout in the fourth doubled Springfield’s lead to 8-0.

Antico added an extra insurance run with a solo homer in the seventh, and R.J. Yeager’s RBI single in the eighth gave the home team a double-digit lead.

Wichita finally put two runs on the board in the ninth with a two-run home run.

Leonardo Taveras threw 2 1/3 innings, yielding two runs on five hits while walking two and striking out two.  Andrew Marrero pitched 2/3 of an inning, walking one.  Springfield allowed two runs on six hits while walking three and striking out seven.

Torres hit 3-for-5 with a home run, a triple, three RBI, and four runs scored.  Church was 3-for-4 with a double, a walk, an RBI, and two runs scored.  Antico went 3-for-4 with a homer, a walk, two RBI, and a run scored.  Redmond went deep and plated three. The Cardinals totaled 10 runs on 14 hits with four walks and seven strikeouts.

Sunday’s game: vs. Wichita, RHP Edwin Nuñez (0-5, 7.43) vs. Andrew Morris RHP (4-1, 1.17) 1:05 CT.

Peoria 2 at Quad Cities 0

The Peoria Chiefs (12-8) shut out the Quad Cities River Bandits (8-12, KC) 2-0 on Saturday at Modern Woodmen Park.  Starter Pete Hansen earned his fourth win this season, throwing 7 2/3 scoreless innings, and allowing three hits while striking out 10.

The Chiefs put a run on the board in the sixth on Chris Rotondo’s RBI single.

Peoria added an extra insurance run in the ninth with Michael Curialle’s RBI single that brought home Tre Richardson.

Alex Iadisernia went 1-for-3 with two walks and a run scored.  Rotondo was 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.  Curialle was 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.  The Chiefs totaled two runs on nine hits with four walks and seven strikeouts while hitting 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position.

Nathanael Heredia did not record an out, yielding two walks in the eighth.  Tyler Bradt cleaned up the mess, earning his second save this season. Bradt pitched 1 1/3 innings, giving up a hit and a walk while striking out two.  Peoria allowed no runs on four hits while walking three and striking out 12.

Sunday’s game: at Quad Cities, RHP Darlin Saladin (2-0, 0.77) vs. Frank Mozzicato LHP (4-6, 3.02) 1:00 CT.

Palm Beach 2, Clearwater 6

The Palm Beach Cardinals (12-7) fell to the Clearwater Threshers (7-13, PHI) 6-2 on Saturday at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.  Starter Chen-Wei Lin took his fifth loss this season, throwing four innings, and allowing six runs on six hits while walking two and striking out eight.

Clearwater took the immediate lead in the top of the first with an RBI double and a grand slam that made the score 5-0. The Threshers added an insurance run in the top of the second with a two-run homer.

The Cardinals cut the deficit down to four in the bottom of the second with Brayden Jobert’s two-run bomb.

Jobert went 1-for-3 with a home run, two RBI, and a run scored.  Ross Friedrick and Anyelo Encarnacion each tallied one hit.  The Cardinals totaled two runs on three hits with a walk and nine strikeouts.

Angel Cuenca threw two scoreless innings, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out one.  Ettore Giulianelli pitched two scoreless innings, yielding one hit while striking out four.  Zack Showalter pitched one scoreless inning, giving up a walk while striking out three.  Palm Beach allowed six runs on nine hits while walking four and striking out 16.

Sunday’s game: vs. Clearwater, RH Hunter Kublick (2-1, 4.84) vs. TBD 11:00 CT.

FCL Cardinals 3, FCL Nationals 2 (11 innings)

The Florida Complex League Cardinals (18-29) walked it off against the FCL Nationals (22-25, WSH) with a score of 3-2 in extra innings on Saturday at Roger Dean Stadium Complex.  Starter Leonel Sequera pitched five scoreless innings, allowing two hits while striking out eight.

Randel Clemente took the mound in the top of the sixth and allowed an RBI double and an RBI single for a Nationals 2-0 lead.

The Cardinals responded in the bottom of the sixth with Luis Piño’s RBI double. He later came around to score after a throwing error on a pickoff attempt.

The score remained unchanged until the 11th when Jonathan Mejia’s RBI single brought Samil De La Rosa home.

Piño hit 3-for-3 with a double, a walk, an RBI, and a run scored.  Mejia went 2-for-4 with a walk, an RBI, and a run scored.  Yancel Guerrero was 2-for-4.  The Cardinals totaled three runs on nine hits with two walks and eight strikeouts.

Clemente pitched an inning, allowing two runs on two hits while walking one and striking out one.  Antoni Cuello, Juan Severino, and Samuel Fabian combined for three scoreless innings of relief, yielding one hit and three walks while striking out five.  Wilmer Ortega earned his first win, pitching two innings, and giving up a walk.  The Cardinals allowed two runs on five hits while walking five and striking out 14.

The FCL Cardinals are off Sunday.

The Cardinals will play a doubleheader on Monday as they will complete their suspended game with the Astros from July 11th.  The Astros were leading 6-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning.

DSL Cardinals 8, DSL Mariners 2 (7 innings)

The Dominican Cardinals (13-14) decimated the DSL Mariners (7-22, SEA) 8-2 on Saturday at the St. Louis Cardinals DR Complex.  Starter Gabriel Chinchilla threw three innings, allowing one run on no hits while walking three and striking out three.

The Mariners struck in the first when Chinchilla threw a wild pitch that allowed the runner on third to come home.

The Cardinals responded with eight in the third with Christian Saez’ and Fernando Roquez’s bases-loaded walks, Andru Arthur and Yoerny Junco’s two-RBI doubles, Yairo Padilla’s RBI groundout, and Facundo Velasquez’s RBI single.

Reliever Justin Hernandez came into the game to pitch the seventh.  He plunked a batter and walked two before being replaced by Alan Reyes, who walked in a run.

Oliver Gonzalez earned his second win this season, pitching three innings, giving up one hit while striking out four.  Hernandez did not record an out, yielding one run on no hits while walking two.  Reyes threw an inning, walking one and striking out three.  The Cardinals allowed two runs on one hit while walking six and striking out 10.

Padilla went 2-for-3 with a walk, an RBI, and a run scored.  Junco and Arthur were each 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI, and a run scored.  The Cardinals totaled eight runs on eight hits with eight walks and nine strikeouts.

Padilla swiped three bases during Saturday’s matchup.

The DSL Cardinals are off Sunday.

Monday’s game: vs. DSL Nationals (13-14, WSH), TBD vs. TBD 10:00 CT.
