Cardinals Minor League Notebook – July 1, 2024

The St. Louis Cardinals system went 2-2 on Sunday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Springfield C Jimmy Crooks, fell a single short of a cycle, walked, drove in two and scored twice. Other standouts include Gavin Collins, Jared Young, Quinn Mathews, Jacob Buchberger, Hunter Hayes and Chase Davis.

Memphis 8 at Gwinnett 5

The Memphis Redbirds (4-2) beat the Gwinnett Stripers (2-4, ATL) 8-5 on Sunday at Coolray Field.  Starter Adam Kloffenstein threw five innings, allowing four runs on seven hits while walking four and striking out one.

The Redbirds scored first in the first with Nick Dunn’s RBI single and Luken Baker reached on a fielders choice that scored Dunn.

Gwinnett responded in the second with an RBI single.

Jared Young and Gavin Collins went back-to-back to make the score 4-1.

The Stripers tied the score in the fifth with an RBI single and a two-RBI single.

Memphis broke open the game in the seventh with Baker’s solo bomb to right field, Collins’s two-RBI single, and Matt Koperniak reached on an error that plated Young.

The home team could only earn one run back in the eighth with a solo homer to make the score 8-5.

Victor Santos earned his third win, throwing 2 2/3 innings, and yielding a run on three hits while striking out three.  Ryan Loutos received his eighth save, pitching 1 1/3 scoreless innings while striking out two.  Memphis allowed five runs on 10 hits while walking four and striking out six.

Young went 2-for-3 with a double, a homer, two walks, an RBI, and two runs scored.  Collins went 2-for-5 with a home run, three RBI, and a run scored.  Baker was 2-for-5 with a homer, an RBI, and a run scored.  The Redbirds totaled eight runs on 13 hits with three walks and eight strikeouts.

The Memphis Redbirds won four of the six games in their road series against the Gwinnett Stripers.  The Redbirds will go home to face the Nashville Sounds (3-3, MIL) on Monday.

Monday’s game: vs. Nashville, LHP Packy Naughton (0-1, 3.38) vs. RHP Evan McKendry 7:05 CT.

Springfield 8, Arkansas 2

The Springfield Cardinals (2-4) defeated the Arkansas Travelers (4-2, SEA) 8-2 on Sunday at Hammons Field.  Starter Quinn Mathews threw 5 1/3 innings, allowing two runs, none earned, on one hit while walking three and striking out three.

The Cardinals struck first in the first with Jimmy Crooks’ RBI triple and Jacob Buchberger’s RBI double.

The Travelers cut the deficit to one with an RBI single in the fifth and an RBI single in the top of the sixth, tying the game at two apiece.

Crooks and Buchberger went back-to-back in the bottom of the sixth as Springfield took a 4-2 lead.

Springfield broke open the game in the eighth with Chandler Redmond’s RBI forceout, Dakota Harris’ RBI single, a wild pitch that allowed Redmond to score, and Matt Lloyd’s RBI forceout.

Crooks went 3-for-4 with a double, a triple, a home run, a walk, two RBI, and two runs scored.  Buchberger went 2-for-4 with a double, a homer, a walk, two RBI, and two runs scored.  Harris was 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored.  The Cardinals totaled eight runs on 10 hits while walking six and striking out six.

Ryan Shreve earned his sixth win, throwing 1 2/3 scoreless innings, and giving up three hits while walking one and striking out one.  Jack Ralston earned his first save, throwing two scoreless innings while striking out one.  Springfield allowed two runs, none earned, on four hits while walking four and striking out five.

The Springfield Cardinals only won two of the six games in their series against the Arkansas Travelers.  On Monday, the Cardinals will continue playing at the NW Arkansas Naturals (4-2, KCR).

Monday’s game: at NW Arkansas, RHP Edwin Nuñez (0-5, 7.07) vs. Tyson Guerrero LHP (1-4, 5.64) 7:05 CT.

Peoria 1, Quad Cities 4

The Peoria Chiefs (3-6) fell to the Quad Cities River Bandits (4-5, KCR) 4-1 on Monday at Dozer Park.  Starter Inohan Paniagua took his fifth loss this season, throwing five innings, and allowing two runs on five hits while walking five and striking out three.

The River Bandits struck first in the first with two RBI singles.Quad Cities extended their lead to 4-0 in the top of the seventh with a two-RBI triple.

The Chiefs finally put a run on the board in the bottom of the seventh with Darlin Moquete’s RBI single.

Chris Rotondo went 3-for-4 with a run scored. Osvaldo Tovalin went 2-for-4.  Moquete was 1-for-3 with an RBI.  The Chiefs totaled one run on seven hits with 11 strikeouts.

Tyler Bradt threw two innings, yielding two runs on two hits while walking one and striking out four.  Roy Garcia pitched two scoreless innings, giving up one hit while striking out one.  Peoria allowed four runs on eight hits while walking six and striking out eight.

The Peoria Chiefs dropped four of the six games in their home series against the Quad Cities River Bandits.  They will continue playing on Monday at the South Bend Cubs (4-5, CHC).

Monday’s game: at South Bend, LHP Pete Hansen (1-6, 4.52) vs. Erian Rodriguez (0-1, 4.00) 6:05 CT.

Palm Beach 1, St. Lucie 5

The Palm Beach Cardinals (4-4) were defeated by the St. Lucie Mets (3-6, NYM) 5-1 on Sunday at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.  Hunter Kublick took his first loss this season, throwing two-plus innings, and allowing five runs on three hits while walking four and striking out four.

The Mets chased Kublick in the third with a bases-loaded walk, a two-RBI single, an RBI double, and a sacrifice fly.

Chase Davis

The Cardinals scored in the fourth with Chase Davis’s solo shot to right field to close the gap to 5-1.

Davis went 2-for-3 with a homer, a walk, an RBI, and a run scored.  Johnfrank Salazar tallied the only other hit, a single.  The Cardinals totaled one run on three hits with four walks and four strikeouts.

Hunter Hayes

Out of the pen, Hunter Hayes pitched five scoreless innings, yielding one hit while striking out three.  Angel Cuenca threw one scoreless inning, allowing one walk.  Ettore Giulianelli pitched one scoreless inning, giving up one walk while striking out two.  Palm Beach allowed five runs on four hits while walking six and striking out nine.

The Palm Beach Cardinals split their series with the St. Lucie Mets, winning three games apiece.  Palm Beach will start a road series on Monday at the Jupiter Hammerheads (5-4, MIA).

Monday’s game: at Jupiter, RHP Jason Savacool (1-3, 4.76) vs. TBD 5:30 CT.

FCL Cardinals – Off Sundays

The Florida Complex League Cardinals (15-24) are off Sundays.  They will continue playing on Monday against the FCL Astros (19-19, HOU).

Monday’s game: vs. FCL Astros, TBD vs. TBD 11:00 CT.

DSL Cardinals – Off Sundays

The Dominican Summer League Cardinals (9-11) are off Sundays.  They will continue playing on Monday against the DSL Giants Black (16-4, SFG).

Monday’s game: vs. DSL Giants Black, RHP Jefferson Moran (2-0, 1.59) vs. TBD 10:00 CT.
