Cardinals Minor League Notebook – August 9, 2022

The St. Louis Cardinals system went 1-1 on Monday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, DH Luis Rodriguez, had two hits and four RBI for the DSL club. Other standouts include Brandon Hernandez and Yancel Guerrero.

Memphis Redbirds – Off

The Redbirds are eight games back of Nashville in the International League West.

Tuesday’s game: vs. Indianapolis, TBA vs. TBA 7:05 CT

Springfield Cardinals – Off

The Cardinals are 2.5 games behind first place Wichita in the Texas League North.

Tuesday’s game: at Amarillo, TBA vs. TBA 7:05 CT

Peoria Chiefs – Off

The Chiefs are 6.5 games behind first place South Bend in the Midwest League West.

Tuesday’s game: at Great Lakes, RH Inohan Paniagua (0-1, 6.75) vs. TBA 6:05 CT

Palm Beach Cardinals – Off

The Beach Birds are two games ahead of St. Lucie in the Florida State League East.

Tuesday’s game: at Bradenton, RH Trent Baker (7-7, 3.19) vs. RHP Bubba Chandler (0-1, 5.59) 5:30 CT

FCL Cardinals 1, FCL Astros Orange 4 (7 innings)

The Florida Complex League Cardinals (18-24) fell to the Astros Orange (20-22) in a seven-inning contest at Roger Dean Stadium. The Cardinals were no-hit until the final frame.

Enrique Saldana tossed two innings and gave up a run on three hits, one walk and two strikeouts. The right-hander took his second loss of the season. Augusto Calderon surrendered two runs in 1 2/3 innings.

The only Cardinal run came in the seventh inning. TCN’s no. 12 prospect, Joshua Baez, walked and advanced on a wild pitch. Brandon Hernandez broke the no-hitter and singled to plate Baez. With the tying run at the dish and only one out, the Cardinals could not score again.

Victor Villanueva threw 2 1/3 innings and yielded one run, two hits and four strikeouts. Omar Sanchez recorded a scoreless seventh inning.

Hernandez had the only Cardinal hit in the contest. The lineup walked six times, however, and left eight runners on base.

Carlos Linarez stole his fourth bag of the season.

The Cardinals are 9.5 games out of first place in the FCL East.

Tuesday’s game: at FCL Marlins, TBA vs. TBA 11:00 CT

DSL Cardinals 7, DSL Colorado 3

The Dominican Summer League Cardinals (27-21) topped Colorado (29-20) on Monday afternoon. Every player in the lineup was on base at least once.

Starter Darlin Saladin pitched 4 2/3 innings and surrendered three runs on six hits, three walks and three strikeouts.

After Colorado scored two runs in the second, the Cardinals tied the game in the third. With a runner on second and third, Luis Rodriguez singled to tie the game at 2-2. Colorado responded in the fourth but the Cardinals tied it again in the home half. TCN’s no. 11 prospect, Jonathan Mejia, hit an RBI triple.

Henry Gomez recorded his fifth win of the year after a scoreless 3 1/3 innings. The right-hander is 5-0 this season. Miguel Martinez tossed a scoreless frame with three strikeouts.

In the sixth, the Cardinals broke the tie. Yancel Guerrero singled to score a run. Rodriguez added two more with a double. Guerrero grounded into a force out in the seventh to plate one more.

Rodriguez had two hits and four RBI. Justin Guerrero had two hits and Yancel Guerrero had two RBI and two runs scored. The lineup went 3-for-12 with runners in scoring position.

Yancel Guerrero and Miguel Vargas both took a base.

The Cardinals are 4.5 games behind the Rockies in the DSL South.
