Cardinals Minor League Notebook – August 5, 2024

The St. Louis Cardinals system went 3-1 on Sunday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Memphis CF Mike Antico, went 4-for-6 with a home run, two doubles, four RBI, and a run scored. Other standouts include Luken Baker, Jordan Walker, Chris Rotondo, Ixan Henderson, Darlin Moquete and Chase Adkison.

Memphis 8 at Durham 6

The Memphis Redbirds (15-18) utilized the longball, hitting four homers, to beat the Durham Bulls (14-19, TB) on Sunday at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.  Starter Ian Bedell pitched just three innings, allowing two runs on four hits while walking two and striking out two.

The Redbirds struck first in the top of the third when Matt Koperniak and Luken Baker went back-to-back with a two-run shot and a solo shot, which was followed by Mike Antico’s RBI double to make the score 4-0.

The Bulls responded with an RBI groundout and an RBI single in the bottom of the third to cut Memphis’s lead in half. A wild pitch by reliever Andre Granillo enabled another run in the sixth to make the score 4-3.

Memphis hit back-to-back bombs again in the top of the seventh with Antico’s three-run shot and Jordan Walker’s solo blast to make the score 8-3.

Durham responded with a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh. The home team’s rally fell short in the ninth with an RBI double and an RBI single to make the final 8-6.

Continuing his rehab, Riley O’Brien earned his first win this season, pitching a scoreless inning while striking out two.  Granillo pitched 1 2/3 innings, yielding one run, none earned, on two hits while walking one and striking out two.  Jacob Bosiokovic threw an inning, giving up one run on one hit while striking out one.  Connor Thomas allowed one hit while striking out two in a scoreless inning.  Chris Roycroft let in two runs on four hits in the ninth.  Memphis allowed six runs, five earned, on 12 hits while walking three and striking out nine.

Leadoff man Antico went 4-for-6 with a home run, two doubles, four RBI, and a run scored.  Walker was 2-for-6 with a homer, an RBI, and a run scored.  Baker went 2-for-4 with a home run, a double, a walk, an RBI, and a run scored.  The Redbirds totaled eight runs on 14 hits with five walks and six strikeouts.

The Redbirds came away with four wins in their six-game road series with the Durham Bulls.  They will hope to carry this momentum into their six-game homestand against the Gwinnett Stripers (16-17, ATL) that begins on Tuesday.

Springfield 3 at Tulsa 5

The Springfield Cardinals (20-13) fell to the Tulsa Drillers (17-15, LAD) 5-3 on Sunday at ONEOK Field.  Starter Edwin Nuñez went just two innings, allowing three runs on two hits while walking three and striking out four. He took his eighth loss this season against no wins in 17 starts, as his ERA grew to 7.88.

The Drillers took an early lead in the first with an RBI single. They extended their lead to 3-0 in the second with a two-run shot to right field.

Springfield got on the board in the fourth when Chris Rotondo’s two-RBI single brought home Jimmy Crooks and Chandler Redmond.

Tulsa added insurance with a pair of solo home runs in the fifth and sixth.

The Cardinals’ rally fell short with Noah Mendlinger’s RBI groundout in the seventh the only offense they could produce in the last half of the game.

Mendlinger went 2-for-5 with an RBI.  Rotondo was 1-for-4 with two RBI.  Crooks and Ramon Mendoza recorded the only other hits for Springfield with Crooks scoring once.  The Cardinals totaled three runs on five hits with four walks and seven strikeouts.

In long relief, Benito Garcia pitched four innings, yielding two runs on two hits while striking out three.  Nathanael Heredia threw a scoreless inning while striking out one.  Andrew Marrero also pitched a scoreless inning.  Springfield allowed five runs on four hits while walking three and striking out eight.

The Cardinals split their six-game set at Tulsa.  They will come home to face the San Antonio Missions (15-17, SD) in a six-game series beginning on Tuesday.

Peoria 7, Quad Cities 2

The Peoria Chiefs (18-18) defeated the Quad Cities River Bandits (17-19, KC) 7-2 on Sunday at Dozer Park.  Starter Ixan Henderson had a quality Midwest League debut, earning his first win in High-A while pitching six innings, and allowing two runs on five hits while walking one and striking out five.

The Chiefs struck first in the first with Brody Moore’s RBI single and Won-Bin Cho’s sacrifice fly.

The River Bandits tied the game in the fourth with a two-run home run.

Peoria regained the lead in the fifth with Johnfrank Salazar’s RBI single and Tre Richardson’s RBI single. The Chiefs added on in the sixth on Darlin Moquete’s two-run moonshot to left, his third home run in his past two games.

The home team added a final insurance run in the eighth on Miguel Villarroel’s RBI single.

Moquete went 1-for-3 with a home run, two walks, two RBI, and three runs scored.  Moore and Salazar went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored each.  Richardson was 2-for-3 with a walk, an RBI, and a run scored.  The Chiefs totaled seven runs on 11 hits with three walks and seven strikeouts.

Tanner Jacobson pitched two scoreless innings, yielding a hit while striking out four.  Hunter Hayes threw a scoreless inning while striking out one.  Peoria allowed two runs on six hits while walking one and striking out 10.

The Peoria Chiefs split their home series with the Quad Cities River Bandits.  They will carry a two-game winning streak into the second half of their homestand against the Cedar Rapids Kernels (18-18, MIN) which begins on Tuesday.

Palm Beach 5, Bradenton 4

The Palm Beach Cardinals (24-10) won a close game over the Bradenton Marauders (12-24, PIT) 5-4 on Sunday at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.  Starter Augusto Calderon threw four innings, allowing one run on three hits while walking one and striking out five.

The Cardinals struck first in the first with Ryan Campos’ RBI forceout that plated Chrisitan Martin.

The Marauders tied the game in the second with an RBI double.

Campos drove in another one with an RBI groundout in the third to give the Cardinals a 2-1 lead.

Ian Petrutz’s RBI single in the fifth extended their lead to 3-1.

Bradenton tied the game in the sixth with an RBI double and an RBI single against reliever Angel Cuenca.

Palm Beach regained the lead in the seventh on Chase Adkison’s two-run bomb.

The visitors put one run on the board in the ninth with an RBI single but failed to tie the game.

Cuenca threw two innings, yielding two runs on three hits while striking out one.  Nolan Sparks earned his first professional win, pitching a scoreless inning while striking out one.  Henry Gomez earned his ninth save this season, giving up one run on three hits while walking one in two innings pitched.  Palm Beach allowed four runs on nine hits while walking two and striking out seven.

Martin went 1-for-2 with a walk and three runs scored.  Adkison went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBI, and a run scored.  Petrutz was 1-for-4 with an RBI.  The Cardinals totaled five runs on seven hits with a walk and eight strikeouts while hitting 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position.

The Cardinals won five of six against the Marauders and have a five-game winning streak as they head into a six-game away series at the Dunedin Blue Jays (18-16, TOR) starting Tuesday.

DSL Cardinals – Off Sunday

The Dominican Summer League Cardinals (22-19) were off Sunday.  On Monday, they will return to play at the DSL Rangers Red (29-15, TEX).

Monday’s game: at DSL Rangers Red, RHP Keiverson Ramirez (4-1, 0.71) vs. TBD 10:00 CT.
