Cardinals Minor League Notebook – August 27, 2023

The St. Louis Cardinals system went 2-2 on Saturday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Memphis left fielder Chase Pinder, hit a grand slam in the Redbirds’ Game 1 win. Other standouts include Nick Raposo, Tekoah Roby, R.J. Yeager and Zane Mills.

Memphis 13 at Charlotte 7 (7 innings, Game 1)

The Memphis Redbirds (22-27) topped the Charlotte Knights (CWS, 10-39) on Saturday at Truist Field.

Michael McGreevy tossed six innings and surrendered five runs on 10 hits and no walks. TCN’s no. 3 prospect fanned seven and received his eighth win. In relief, Grant Black yielded two runs in the seventh inning.

The Redbirds put up four runs in the first inning. Juan Yepez brought in the first via sacrifice fly. Red hot Moisés Gómez blasted a two-run home run and Nick Raposo hit a solo shot. Iván Herrera plated one with a sacrifice fly in the second. In the third, Irving Lopez grounded into a double play and Gómez came across. Raposo scored on a wild pitch to make the score 7-0.

Memphis added six runs between the fifth and sixth innings. Lopez hit his first Triple-A home run in the fifth, a two-run blast. Chase Pinder hit a grand slam in the sixth, his third long ball for the Redbirds.

Matt Koperniak went 3-for-5 from the leadoff spot for the Redbirds. Herrera, Raposo and Pinder all recorded two hits. Raposo was 2-for-2 with two walks, one RBI and four runs scored. Gómez came across three times and Pinder had a grand slam.

On the base paths, Kramer Robertson took his 21st bag of the year.

Memphis 1 at Charlotte 4 (7 innings, Game 2)

In Game 2 of the doubleheader, the Memphis Redbirds (22-28) fell to the Charlotte Knights (CWS, 11-39) on Saturday night.

Connor Thomas took his fourth loss of the season after he was touched for three runs, two earned, on seven hits and two walks in four innings. Kyle Leahy threw two innings and gave up a run.

The only Memphis run came in the fifth inning to tie the game. Matt Koperniak’s solo home run was his 10th at Triple-A. The Knights made it 4-1 in the bottom half.

The Redbirds recorded five hits and three walks. Nick Dunn doubled and Koperniak homered. The lineup went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position.

In the field, José Fermín committed a throwing error. Irving Lopez had an outfield assist.

Sunday’s game: at Charlotte, RHP Gordon Graceffo (4-2, 4.46) vs RHP Luis Patino (3-5, 6.79) 11:05 CT

Springfield 3, Corpus Christi 5 (10 innings)

The Springfield Cardinals (24-26) were defeated by the Corpus Christi Hooks (HOU, 25-25) at Hammons Field in the 10th inning.

In his first game in the Cardinals system, first with Springfield and first off the IL, Tekoah Roby gave up one run in three innings. TCN’s no. 6 prospect struck out six.

After the Hooks plated one in the first, Pedro Pagés RBI double in the second tied the score. In the sixth, Mike Antico grounded into a forceout to bring Victor Scott home and re-tie the game at 2-2.

Working out of the bullpen, Logan Gragg fanned seven batters in five innings with one run yielded. Nick Trogrlic-Iverson was charged with three runs, one earned, in the final two innings. The right-hander took his fourth loss.

Corpus Christi put up three runs in the 10th inning. The Cardinals tried to come back in the home half. Noah Mendlinger grounded out to plate Jacob Buchberger but the rally ended there.

Scott and Pagés both had two hits for Springfield. Pagés and Jose Alvarez each doubled. The lineup was 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position with eight runners left on base.

Errol Robinson committed a throwing error, his fifth of the season.

Sunday’s game: vs. Corpus Christi, LHP Alex Cornwell (2-1, 2.70) vs. RHP Diosmerky Taveras (1-3, 5.36) 1:35 CT

Peoria 5, West Michigan 2

Behind another late comeback, the Peoria Chiefs (30-23) defeated the West Michigan Whitecaps (DET, 30-22) on Saturday at Dozer Park.

Starter Zane Mills pitched six innings and yielded two runs, one earned, on five hits and two walks. The right-hander fanned three.

Peoria scored all five runs between the seventh and eighth innings. Jimmy Crooks singled to plate one and Brody Moore tied the game with a single in the seventh inning. Nathan Church’s double in the eighth brought two runs across. Crooks grounded out to make the score 5-2.

Edwin Nunez tossed three no-hit innings with two strikeouts. TCN’s no. 25 prospect earned his third High-A win.

R.J. Yeager and Ramon Mendoza both recorded three hits for Peoria. Church and Crooks both drove in two runs. The lineup had 12 hits and four walks in the contest.

On the bases, Yeager stole his ninth bag for the Chiefs. Mills committed an error.

Palm Beach Cardinals – Off

The Palm Beach Cardinals (24-27) had an off day on Saturday.
