Cardinals Minor League Notebook – August 27, 2022

The St. Louis Cardinals system was 2-1 on Friday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Memphis left fielder Clint Coulter, was 2-for-4 including a home run, three RBI and two runs scored. Other standouts include Conner Capel, Scott Hurst, Kyle Leahy and Inohan Paniagua.

Memphis 11, Charlotte 1

The Memphis Redbirds pounded the Knights to the tune of 11 runs in a Friday night contest at AutoZone Park. Starter Jack Flaherty, in what could be his final rehab assignment for St. Louis, pitched 5 1/3 innings, gave up one run on four hits, struck out three and walked three to earn the win, his first.

James Naile relieved Flaherty and threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings. Zack Thompson hurled a scoreless eighth. Kodi Whitley tossed a scoreless ninth.

Charlotte put up their only run of the game in the second inning. The Cardinals answered with a six-run third. Clint Coulter doubled. Cory Spangenberg walked. Evan Mendoza plated Coulter and Spangenberg on a double. Mendoza scored on a double by Scott Hurst. Ivan Herrera singled. Conner Capel doubled, Hurst and Herrera came home. Capel scored on a double by Austin Allen.

Springfield added a seventh run in the seventh on a double by Capel. Coulter hit a three-run home run in the eighth, and Hurst plated the fourth run of the inning on a sac fly.

Coulter was 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Capel was 2-for-5 with three RBI. Hurst was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Allen was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Spangenberg was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Mendoza drove in two. .

On the base paths, Herrera stole his third base of the season. Capel was caught stealing. In the field, Capel had an outfield assist at home.

Memphis is 61-59 on the season and is in fifth place in the International League West, 12 games back of first place Nashville.

Saturday’s game:  vs. Charlotte, TBA vs. RHP David Martin, 6:35 CT.

Springfield 4 at NW Arkansas 6

The Springfield Cardinals fell to the Naturals on Friday night by the score of 6-4. Starter Kyle Leahy pitched seven innings, gave up two unearned runs on five hits, struck out five and walked one.

Tyler Pike relieved Leahy and surrendered two outs in the eighth. The left hander was charged with a blown save. Dalton Roach allowed the two winning runs in the ninth and took the loss, his eighth.

Springfield took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on RBI doubles by Nick Dunn and Brady Whalen. Chandler Redmond plated a run on a triple in the fourth to make it 3-0.

NW Arkansas got to the Springfield bullpen and put up two runs in each of the seventh and eighth innings to take a 4-3 lead. The Cardinals tied in the ninth on a single by Matt Koperniak.

The Naturals walked it off with two runs in the home half of the ninth.

Whalen was 3-for-4 with an RBI. Koperniak was 2-for-5 with an RBI. Irving Lopez was 2-for-4.

On the base paths, Chase Pinder stole his fifth base of the season. Koperniak swiped his 10th bag. Koperniak and Errol Robinson were both caught stealing.

Pinder made a fielding error.

Springfield is 26-23 in the second half and is in second place in the Texas League North, five games back of first place Wichita.

Saturday’s game:  at NW Arkansas, RHP Logan Gragg (0-0, 7.43) vs. T.J Sikkema LHP (0-2, 7.36) 6:05 CT.

Peoria 4 at Beloit 1

The Peoria Chiefs beat the Sky Carp in a 4-1 road win on Friday night. Starter Inohan Paniagua pitched six innings, gave up one run on five hits and struck out four to earn his second win.

Jack Ralston relieved Paniagua and threw a scoreless seventh. Levi Prater and Andre Granillo combined for the final two scoreless innings. Granillo earned his fifth save.

Peoria took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run long ball by Todd Lott. The Chiefs made it 3-0 in the second. Tommy Jew singled, Noah Mendlinger doubled, and Jew scored on a sac fly by Jacob Buchberger.

Beloit put up their only run in the third. The Chiefs added a fourth run in the sixth. Buchberger reached on an error and stole second base. Lott reached on an error and Buchberger scored.

Mendlinger was 2-for-4 on the night. Lott had two RBI.

On the base paths, Buchberger stole his 14th base of the season. Aaron McKeithan was caught stealing.

Buchberger made a fielding error.

Peoria is 22-30 in the second half and is in last place in the Midwest League West, 10 games back of first place South Bend.

Saturday’s game:  at Beloit, RHP Wilfredo Pereira (6-5, 4.31) vs. RHP Gabe Bierman, 6:35 CT.

 Palm Beach at St. Lucie (postponed)

Friday’s Palm Beach Cardinals at St. Lucie Mets game was postponed due to wet grounds. It will be played as part of a doubleheader on Saturday.

The 28-23 Beach Birds have a one-game lead over the 27-24 Mets in the Florida State League East Division.
