The St. Louis Cardinals system went 3-1 on Thursday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Springfield LH Alex Cornwell, threw eight shutout innings, allowing three hits and three walks while striking out five. Other standouts include Matt Lloyd, Jordan Walker, Leonardo Bernal, Jose Suarez and Chris Rotondo.

The Memphis Redbirds (23-25) were crushed by the Charlotte Knights (22-24, CWS) on Thursday at AutoZone Park.
Starter Zack Thompson took his third loss this season, pitching 3 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on six hits while walking two and striking out four. The Knights took an early lead with a three-run homer in the top of the third.
Mike Antico responded with a solo longball in the bottom of the third to make the score 3-1.

Charlotte added two more in the fourth with two RBI singles.
The Redbirds fought back in the fifth with Jordan Walker’s RBI single to make the score 5-2.
The visitors took that run back in the seventh with an RBI single.

An RBI double and an RBI single in the ninth put the game out of reach, making the score 8-3.
Ryan Shreve threw three innings, yielding a run on five hits while walking one and striking out two. Andre Granillo threw 2 1/3 innings, giving up two runs on three hits while striking out four. Memphis allowed eight runs on 14 hits while walking three and striking out 10.
Walker went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Matt Koperniak was 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, and a run scored. Antico hit a home run and walked. The Redbirds totaled three runs on eight hits with four walks and six strikeouts.

The Springfield Cardinals (31-17) shut out the Tulsa Drillers (22-25, LAD) 7-0 on Thursday at Hammons Field. Starter Alex Cornwell earned his sixth win this season, throwing eight scoreless innings, allowing three hits and three walks while striking out five.

Matt Lloyd’s two-run dinger to left field in the fourth gave the Cardinals the early lead.

Chris Rotondo smacked a two-run homer of his own in the fifth to double their lead to 4-0.

Springfield added three insurance runs in the sixth on Lloyd’s two-RBI double and Aaron McKeithan’s bases-loaded walk.
Lloyd went 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, four RBI, and two runs scored. Rotondo recorded the only other hit, a homer, with two walks and two RBI. The Cardinals totaled seven runs on four hits with eight walks and five strikeouts.
Edwin Nuñez threw a scoreless ninth inning while walking two and striking out two. Springfield allowed no runs on three hits while walking five and striking out seven.
Friday’s game: vs. Tulsa, LHP Quinn Mathews (2-1, 2.62) vs. Orlando Ortiz-Mayr RHP (7-6, 4.76) 7:05 CT.
On Thursday, the Peoria Chiefs (27-24) walked it off in back-to-back nights against the Fort Wayne TinCaps (17-34, SD) at Dozer Park. Starter Hancel Rincon threw six innings, allowing two runs on four hits while walking three and striking out five.
Kade Kretzschmar’s sacrifice bunt and a fielding error allowed Won-Bin Cho to score and Alex Iadisernia’s RBI groundout gave the Chiefs a 2-0 lead in the second. Leonardo Bernal’s RBI double in the third extended their lead to 3-0.
Two sacrifice flies in the fourth for the TinCaps brought the game to within one.
Osvaldo Berrios took the mound in the top of the eighth and conceded two RBI singles that gave Fort Wayne a 4-3 lead.
Peoria tied the game in the bottom of the eighth with Cho’s sacrifice fly.
Bernal ended the game in the 10th with a two-run moonshot to give the Chiefs the 6-4 win.

Bernal went 3-for-5 with a home run, a double, three RBI, and a run scored. Iadisernia hit 2-for-4 with an RBI. Cho was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. The Chiefs totaled six runs on seven hits with one walk and 12 strikeouts.
Benjamin Arias threw a scoreless inning while striking out one. Berrios pitched two innings, yielding two runs, none earned, on three hits while striking out two. Hunter Hayes earned his first win with Peoria, throwing a scoreless inning, and giving up a hit and a walk while striking out two. Peoria allowed four runs, two earned, on eight hits while walking four and striking out 10.
Friday’s game: vs. Fort Wayne, LHP Pete Hansen (5-7, 3.75) vs. Jagger Haynes LHP (2-5, 4.15) 7:05 CT.
The Palm Beach Cardinals (35-14) defeated the St. Lucie Mets (17-32, NYM) 7-3 on Thursday at Clover Park.
Starter Jose Davila threw four innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits while walking three and striking out six. The Mets took the quick lead in the first with an RBI single and an RBI double.
The Cardinals responded in the fifth with Lizandro Espinoza’s two-run bomb and Joshua Baez and Josh Kross’ RBI walks to take a 4-2 lead.
Palm Beach extended the lead to 6-2 with J.J. Wetherholt’s RBI groundout and Jose Suarez’s RBI single. Christian Martin added one final run in the seventh with an RBI double.
Michael Watson pitched the eighth and gave up a sacrifice fly that cut the Cardinals’ lead to 7-3.
Randel Clemente earned his fourth win this season, conceding two walks while striking out four in two scoreless innings. Augusto Calderon yielded a hit in his scoreless inning. Watson pitched an inning, giving up a run on two hits while walking one and striking out one. Angel Cuenca pitched the scoreless ninth while striking out one. Palm Beach allowed three runs, two earned, on seven hits while walking six and striking out 12.
Espinoza was 1-for-5 with a home run, two RBI, and a run scored. Baez reached safely four times with four walks and an RBI. Suarez hit 2-for-5 with an RBI. Kross went 1-for-4 with a walk, an RBI, and a run scored. The Cardinals totaled seven runs on seven hits with 11 walks and eight strikeouts.
Friday’s game: at St. Lucie, RH Chen-Wei Lin (8-5, 3.06) vs. TBD 5:10 CT.
