Cardinals Minor League Notebook – August 23, 2022

The St. Louis Cardinals system went 1-1 on Monday with a Florida Complex League win. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, outfielder Luis Piño, had a home run and two RBI. Other standouts include Javier Bolivar and Anyelo Encarnacion.

Memphis Redbirds – Off

After a 1-5 road trip, Triple-A Memphis is 11 games behind Nashville in the International League West.

Springfield Cardinals – Off

The Double-A Cardinals are six games behind the Wichita Wind Surge in the Texas League North.

Peoria Chiefs – Off

The High-A Chiefs are 10 games out of first place in the Midwest League West.

Palm Beach Cardinals – Off

The Class-A Beach Birds are tied for first with the St. Lucie Mets in the Florida State League East.

FCL Cardinals 6 at FCL Astros Orange 5

The rookie-level Florida Complex League Cardinals (25-28) edged the Astros Orange (25-28) on Monday at The Ballpark of the Palm Beaches.

Starter Alec Willis tossed three innings and surrendered two runs on four hits, one walk and three strikeouts. Diorys Guerrero yielded three unearned runs in three innings. The left-hander fanned six and earned his second win of the year.

After the Astros scored two runs in the second, the Cardinals responded in the third and fourth. Jose Cordoba singled to score Javier Bolivar and Roblin Heredia plated one in the fourth. In the fifth, Luis Piño blasted a solo shot, his third of the season.

Augusto Calderon recorded his first save of the season after a scoreless three innings with six strikeouts.

In the seventh, the Cardinals took the lead. Piño grounded out and Won-Bin Cho came across. Cordoba scored on an error and Lizandro Espiñoza drove in Adanson Cruz via sacrifice fly to take a 6-5 lead.

Bolivar had two hits, one walk and a run. Piño had two RBI and Cho went 1-for-3 with two walks and a run scored. Cardinals pitching struck out 15 batters.

Bolivar stole a bag and Adanson Cruz had an outfield assist.

The Cardinals are 7.5 games behind the Mets in the FCL East. They play their last game of the season on Tuesday.

DSL Cardinals 2 at DSL Rockies 3

The rookie-level Dominican Summer League Cardinals (33-25) were walked off by the Rockies (40-19) on Monday afternoon.

Darlin Saladin pitched three innings and yielded a run on two hits, three walks and five strikeouts. In two innings, In two frames, Esteban Contreras surrendered an unearned run and fanned four batters.

Anyelo Encarnacion

The Cardinals and Rockies traded runs in the third and fourth innings. In the third, Anyelo Encarnacion singled to score Yancel Guerrero. Arfeni Batista brought across Justin Guerrero via sacrifice fly in the fourth.

Oliver Lopez gave up an earned run in 1 1/3 innings. The Rockies won the game after an error committed by Yancel Guerrero.

Encarnacion and Yancel Guerrero each had two hits. Jose Suarez and Marcelo Perez walked twice. The lineup went 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position and left 11 runners on base.

Encarnacion and Suarez both stole a bag.

The Cardinals are 6.5 games back of the Rockies in the DSL South. They also play their final game of the year on Tuesday.
