Cardinals Minor League Notebook – August 22, 2022

The St. Louis Cardinals system went 2-2 on Sunday. The Cardinal Nation’s Players of the Day are Pedro Pages and Clint Coulter, who combined for eight hits, four RBI and three runs for Memphis. Other standouts include Brady Whalen, Wilfredo Pereira, Todd Lott and R.J. Yeager.

Memphis 6 at Gwinnett 8

The Memphis Redbirds (59-57) fell to the Gwinnett Stripers (ATL, 58-59) on Sunday afternoon at Coolray Field. Six Redbird pitchers were used in the contest.

Coming off the injured list, starter Aaron Brooks only threw two innings and surrendered two runs on five hits and one walk. Fill in starter Garrett Williams went next and gave up five runs in 1 2/3 innings. The left-hander struck out three and took his fourth loss of the season. Freddy Pacheco was charged with a solo home run in 1 1/3 innings but had three strikeouts.

After the Stripers scored two in the first, the Redbirds tied the game in the fourth inning. Clint Coulter recorded an RBI single and Cory Spangenberg doubled to score Pedro Pages who had doubled. Gwinnett responded with a five-run bottom half.

Zack Thompson tossed a perfect sixth inning with two strikeouts. Kodi Whitley and Kyle Ryan both recorded a scoreless inning.

The Redbirds tried to mount a comeback in the final two innings. Coulter recorded another RBI after he singled to plate Pages. In the ninth, Luken Baker scored a run via sacrifice fly and Pages had an RBI double. Coulter brought across his third run of the game to make the score 8-6.

Scott Hurst, Pages and Coulter each had four hits. Pages had three doubles and scored three times. Coulter recorded three RBI. The lineup had 16 hits but went 4-for-16 with runners in scoring position.

Ben DeLuzio had an outfield assist.

Memphis went 1-5 against Gwinnett this week. They are 11 games behind Nashville in the International League West.

Springfield 6, Arkansas 5

The Springfield Cardinals (24-21) edged the Arkansas Travelers (SEA, 20-25) with a late comeback at Hammons Field.

In a rehab start, St. Louis’ Jack Flaherty surrendered a run in four innings. The right-hander yielded four hits, walked one and struck out seven. Regular starter Domingo Robles was charged with four runs in three innings on five hits, two walks and three strikeouts.

With the Cardinals down 5-0 in the seventh, they began a comeback. Chase Pinder came across on a Brady Whalen ground out. Matt Koperniak doubled to score Masyn Winn and Julio Rodriguez plated one in the eighth. With the bases loaded, Whalen tripled and the Cardinals took the lead.

Michael Brettell earned his fifth win of the season after a scoreless eighth. Dalton Roach tossed a scoreless ninth inning and earned his fourth save.

Whalen had two hits and three RBI. Koperniak had a run and an RBI. The lineup went 4-for-11 with runners in scoring position.

Whalen and Winn both took a bag.

The Cardinals went 4-2 against the Travelers this week and are six games behind Wichita in the Texas League North.

Peoria 7, Quad Cities 8

The Peoria Chiefs (20-28) fell to the Quad Cities River Bandits (KC, 20-28) at Dozer Park on Sunday afternoon.

Starter Wilfredo Pereira surrendered a two-run homer in six innings. The right-hander fanned an impressive 13 batters. Nathanael Heredia yielded two runs in only 1/3 of an inning.

In the first, Jacob Buchberger doubled to score a run but the River Bandits responded with two in the second. In the fourth, Patrick Romeri recorded an RBI single to tie the game. Osvaldo Tovalin doubled in the sixth to plate one and Noah Mendlinger extended the lead to 4-2. Tommy Jew and Todd Lott both brought a run across in the sixth.

In 1 2/3 innings, Chris Gerard gave up three runs and took his first High-A loss. Andre Granillo was charged with an unearned run in the ninth inning.

After Quad Cities scored six runs in the last three innings, Peoria tried to mount a comeback. Aaron McKeithan singled to bring Buchberger across and advance Francisco Hernandez to third. With the tying run at third and two out, Mack Chambers struck out on three pitches.

Lott had four hits, two runs scored and an RBI. Buchberger and Chambers each had two hits. The lineup had 14 hits and went 7-for-20 with runners in scoring position. The pitching struck out 17 batters.

Jew took two bases. The center fielder has 27 this year.

The Chiefs went 2-4 against the last place River Bandits this week. They are 10 games out of first place in the Midwest League West.

Palm Beach 5, Fort Myers 1

The Palm Beach Cardinals (26-22) topped the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels (MIN, 20-26) on Sunday at Roger Dean Stadium.

Starter Hancel Rincon surrendered an unearned run in five innings. The right-hander fanned seven batters and earned his second win of the season.

In the third, Joshua Baez singled to score a run. Jimmy Crooks III doubled in the fourth and plated R.J. Yeager to take a 2-1 lead. Yeager tripled in the fifth and brought across two runs. The first baseman came across on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 5-1.

Gustavo Rodriguez tossed a scoreless three innings with two strikeouts. Andrew Marrero recorded a 1-2-3 ninth and fanned two batters.

Yeager went 1-for-2 with a triple, two RBI and two runs scored. TCN’s no. 12 prospect, Baez, had a hit, a walk, an RBI and a run. The lineup went 3-for-9 with runners in scoring position.

Yeager stole the first bag of his professional career and Scott took his eighth.

The Beach Birds went 2-4 against Fort Myers this week. They are tied for first with the Mets in the Florida State League East.
