Cardinals Minor League Notebook – August 2, 2024

The St. Louis Cardinals system was 2-2 on Thursday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day is Memphis LF Matt Koperniak who went 5-for-5 with three doubles, five RBI, and a run scored.  Other standouts include Chen-Wei Lin, Ian Petrutz, Victor Scott II, Chase Davis, and Jacob Buchberger.

Memphis 9 at Durham 6

The Memphis Redbirds (13-17) beat the Durham Bulls (13-17, TBR) 9-6 on Thursday at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.  Starter Steven Matz threw two innings in his rehab assignment, allowing one run on one hit while striking out two.

The Bulls struck first in the second with a solo shot.

They extended their lead in the third with a three-run shot against reliever Alex Cornwell.

The Redbirds put two runs on the board in the fifth with José Fermín’s RBI single and Alfonso Rivas III’s sacrifice fly.

Durham extended their lead to 6-2 with a two-RBI double in the seventh.

Memphis began their comeback in the eighth with Matt Koperniak’s two-RBI double.

In the ninth, the visitors took the lead with Victor Scott II’s two-RBI single and Koperniak’s three-RBI double to make the score 9-6.

Koperniak went 5-for-5 with three doubles, five RBI, and a run scored.  Scott II was 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored.  Fermín hit 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.  The Redbirds totaled nine runs on 11 hits with five walks and 10 strikeouts.

Cornwell earned his second win this season, allowing five runs on eight hits while walking two and striking out two in six innings pitched.  Ryan Loutos threw a scoreless inning to earn his 11th save this season, yielding a hit.  Memphis allowed six runs on 10 hits while walking two and striking out four.

Friday’s game: at Durham, LHP Zack Thompson (2-2, 4.40) vs. TBD 5:35 CT.

Springfield 8 at Tulsa 10

The Springfield Cardinals (18-12) blew a late lead to let the Tulsa Drillers (16-13, LAD) walk it off 10-8 on Thursday at ONEOK Field.  Starter Zane Mills threw three innings, allowing two runs on four hits while walking two and striking out one.

The Cardinals scored first in the top of the second on Jacob Buchberger’s three-run moonshot and Nathan Church’s RBI double.

Tulsa responded with a two-RBI triple to cut the deficit in half.

Chandler Redmond drilled a two-run homer to right-center field to extend their lead to 6-2.

The home team added two more on a two-run shot to left field to cut Springfield’s lead down to two.

A wild pitch in the sixth allowed Buchberger to score and Church grounded into a double play that plated Ramon Mendoza.

The Drillers started the comeback in the eighth with an RBI single and an RBI groundout to make it 8-6.  In the ninth, they continued their comeback with an RBI single and finished it off with a three-run home run to right field to walk it off.

Wilfredo Pereira allowed two runs on three hits while walking three and striking out two.  Nathanael Heredia pitched an inning, giving up two hits and two walks while striking out one.  Leonardo Taveras threw an inning, giving up two runs, one earned, on two hits while walking two.  Andrew Marrero took his third loss this season, yielding four runs on three hits while walking two and striking out three in 1 2/3 innings pitched.  Springfield allowed 10 runs, nine earned, on 14 hits while walking 11 and striking out seven.

Redmond went 1-for-2 with a home run, a walk, two RBI, and two runs scored.  Buchberger was 1-for-3 with a homer, a walk, three RBI, and two runs scored.  Mendoza hit 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored.  The Cardinals totaled eight runs on six hits with six walks and 10 strikeouts.

Friday’s game: at Tulsa, RHP Tink Hence (4-2, 3.20) vs. Carlos Duran RHP (0-0, 1.32) 7:00 CT.

Peoria 5, Quad Cities 15

The Peoria Chiefs (16-17) were crushed 15-5 by the Quad Cities River Bandits (16-17, KC) on Thursday at Dozer Park.  Starter Inohan Paniagua took his seventh loss this season, pitching four innings, and allowing five runs on seven hits while striking out seven.

The Chiefs responded in the second with Won-Bin Cho’s RBI single to make the score 2-1.

Quad Cities extended their lead in the fourth with a two-RBI double and Paniagua threw a wild pitch that allowed another runner to come home to make it 5-1.

Benjamin Arias took the mound in the fifth and allowed an RBI double, an RBI single, and a three-run homer to give them a 10-1 lead.

Chase Davis’s first High-A home run was a two-run bomb to right field to make the score 10-3.

After Arias allowed two hitters to reach in the seventh, Dionys Rodriguez took the mound and gave up a grand slam to the second batter he faced.

The visitors added a final run on an RBI single to extend their lead to 15-3.

Davis hit an RBI groundout in the eighth.

Davis went 1-for-4 with a home run, three RBI, and a run scored.  Curialle went 1-for-1 with a pinch-hit home run, an RBI, and a run scored.  Alex Iadisernia was 1-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored.  The Chiefs totaled five runs on six hits with two walks and 11 strikeouts.

Arias allowed seven runs on five hits while walking one and striking out four in 2 2/3 innings pitched.  Rodriguez yielded three runs on three hits while walking two and striking out one in an inning pitched.  Carlos Linarez pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit.  Peoria allowed 15 runs on 16 hits while walking three and striking out 13.

Friday’s game: vs. Quad Cities, RHP Hancel Rincon (7-5, 4.05) vs. Ethan Bosacker RHP (2-1, 1.76) 7:05 CT.

Palm Beach 5, Bradenton 2

On Thursday, the Palm Beach Cardinals (21-10) defeated the Bradenton Marauders (12-21, PIT) 5-2 at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.  Starter Chen-Wei Lin threw seven scoreless innings to earn his seventh win this season, allowing three hits and a walk while striking out seven.

The Cardinals struck first in the bottom of the sixth with Ian Petrutz’s two-RBI single and Jose Cordoba’s two-RBI single to take a 4-0 lead.

They extended the lead in the seventh with Sammy Hernandez’s RBI double.

The Mauraders fought back with an RBI single in the eighth.

However, the only offense they could put up in the ninth was an RBI single to make the score 5-2.

Zack Showalter threw an inning, yielding one run on a hit while walking three and striking out three.  Angel Cuenca pitched an inning, giving up one run on two hits while walking one.  Palm Beach allowed two runs on six hits while walking five and striking out 10.

Petrutz went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.  Hernandez hit 3-for-3 with a double, a walk, an RBI, and a run scored.  Cordoba was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI.  The Cardinals totaled five runs on nine hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

Friday’s game: vs. Bradenton, RH Leonel Sequera (0-0, 3.00) vs. TBD 5:30 CT.

DSL Cardinals at DSL Nationals – canceled

The game between the DSL Cardinals and the DSL Nationals was canceled due to rain.  The Cardinals will continue play on Friday at the DSL NYY Yankees (15-25, NYY).

Friday’s game: at DSL NYY Yankees, RH Branneli Franco (0-3, 6.59) vs. TBD 10:00 CT.
