On Saturday, the St. Louis Cardinals system went 2-3 while scoring just 10 runs in total. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Quinn Mathews, fanned 11 in seven scoreless innings for Springfield. Other standouts include Chandler Redmond, Matt Svanson, Chase Adkison and Gerardo Salas.
Memphis Redbirds – off Saturday
The Memphis Redbirds (21-23) did not play on Saturday as the game was moved to Friday, August 16th as part of a doubleheader. They will complete their road series at the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (22-20, MIA) on Sunday.
Sunday’s game: at Jacksonville, RHP Michael McGreevy (5-7, 4.26) vs. TBD 4:05 CT.
The Springfield Cardinals (27-17) defeated the Frisco RoughRiders (24-20, TEX) 4-1 on Saturday at Riders Field. Starter Quinn Mathews earned his second win in three decisions with Springfield, throwing seven scoreless innings, and allowing five hits while striking out 11 and walking none.

The Cardinals struck first in the first with Chandler Redmond’s three-run bomb to left field. Redmond added a solo moonshot to center field to extend their lead to 4-0 in the top of the eighth.

Frisco put one on the board in the bottom of the eighth with an RBI single to make the score 4-1.
Benito Garcia threw an inning, yielding one run on two hits while striking out one. Matt Svanson threw a scoreless ninth while striking out two to earn the save. His 44 appearances and 22 saves are the most in Double-A this season.
Matt Svanson is 22 for 22 in saves this season with Springfield. He leads all of Double-A baseball and is second in the Minors this year.

Springfield allowed one run on seven hits while striking out 14.
Redmond hit 2-for-4 with two homers, four RBI, and two runs scored. Jimmy Crooks went 3-for-5 with a run scored. Nathan Church was 2-for-4 with a HBP. The Cardinals totaled four runs on nine hits with two walks and 11 strikeouts.
Sunday’s game: at Frisco, RHP Brandon Komar (6-1, 2.24) vs. Emiliano Teodo (5-3, 1.72) 6:05 CT.
Peoria 1 at Wisconsin 8 (Game 1)
Behind a leaky bullpen, the Peoria Chiefs (22-24) lost the first half of the doubleheader 8-1 to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (28-17, MIL) on Saturday at Neuroscience Group Field. This was the completion of Friday’s suspended game.
Before the stoppage, starter Hancel Rincon threw four innings, allowing one run on three hits while walking one and striking out five. Wisconsin struck first in the third with a sacrifice fly.
Johnfrank Salazar tied the game at one apiece with his RBI single in the top of the seventh.
In the bottom of the seventh, reliever Hunter Hayes allowed a two-RBI double and an RBI single.
Roy Garcia took the mound in the eighth and gave up two RBI singles and a throwing error by third baseman Michael Curialle let two more runs score.
Hayes took his second loss this season, throwing three innings, and yielding three runs on four hits while walking one and striking out four. Garcia pitched an inning, giving up four runs, two earned, on three hits while walking one and striking out three. Peoria allowed eight runs, six earned, on 10 hits while walking three and striking out 12.
Salazar went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Leonardo Bernal and Alex Iadisernia tallied the only other hits for the Chiefs. Brody Moore was 0-for-2 with two walks and a run scored. The Chiefs totaled one run on four hits with three walks and eight strikeouts.
Peoria 5 at Wisconsin 2 (7 innings, Game 2)
The Peoria Chiefs (23-24) split the Saturday doubleheader with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (28-18, MIL) with their 5-2 Game 2 win at Neuroscience Group Field. Starter Pete Hansen threw 4 1/3 innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits while walking two and striking out six.
The Timber Rattlers struck first in the second with an RBI single and another run scored on the same play after center fielder Chase Davis committed a fielding error and first-baseman Brayden Jobert committed a throwing error.
Chase Adkison put the Chiefs on the board in the fourth with a sacrifice fly. The Chiefs tied the game in the fifth when Tre Richardson grounded into a double play that scored Brody Moore.
Peoria took the lead in the sixth with Adkison’s RBI double. Leonardo Bernal’s bases-loaded walk and a wild pitch that let Davis score extended the visitors’ lead to 5-2.
Adkison doubled with two RBI. Jobert singled, doubled and scored a run. Alex Iadisernia went 2-for-4 with a run scored. The Chiefs totaled five runs on eight hits with five walks and six strikeouts.
Tanner Jacobson earned his third win this season, throwing 2 2/3 scoreless innings, and yielding two hits while striking out one. Peoria allowed two runs, one earned, on seven hits while walking two and striking out seven.
Sunday’s game: at Wisconsin, LHP Ixan Henderson (1-0, 4.50) vs. Ryan Birchard RHP (0-1, 12.00) 1:10 CT.
The Palm Beach Cardinals (31-14) were shut out 5-0 by the Jupiter Hammerheads (23-22, MIA) on Saturday at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium. Starter Gerardo Salas took his fifth loss this season, pitching six innings, and allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits while striking out two.
The Hammerheads struck first in the third with a two-RBI single.
Angel Cuenca replaced Salas in the seventh and conceded an RBI single, and in the eighth, he allowed a two-RBI single.
Cuenca pitched 1 2/3 innings, giving up three runs on five hits while walking and striking out one. Augusto Calderon threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings while striking out one. Palm Beach allowed five runs, four earned, on 11 hits while walking one and striking out four.
Ryan Campos, Ross Friedrick, and Cade McGee recorded the only hits for the home team. The Cardinals totaled no runs on three hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.

DSL Cardinals 0 at DSL Angels 11
The Dominican Summer League Cardinals (26-25) were destroyed 11-0 by the DSL Angels (38-17, LAA) on Saturday at the Los Angeles Angels DR Complex. Starter Jefferson Moran took his first loss this season, throwing two innings, and allowing four runs on three hits while walking two and striking out four.
The Angels took an early 3-0 lead in the first with a three-RBI double. They extended their lead in the second when Moran threw a wild pitch that let a run score while catcher Paulo Asprilla caught a runner trying to advance to third.
Reiner Lopez replaced Moran and gave up a two-RBI in the third to make the score 6-0. The home team added another insurance run in the fourth with a sacrifice fly.
Jose Suriel took over the mound in the fourth, and in the fifth, he gave up an RBI single. Xavier Cruz replaced Suriel and allowed a two-run homer in the sixth and an RBI double in the seventh to make the score 11-0.
Lopez pitched an inning, allowing three runs on two hits while walking three. Suriel threw two innings, yielding a run on two hits while striking out two. Cruz pitched two innings, giving up three runs on five hits. Giovanni Vargas was the only pitcher to escape unscathed as he threw a scoreless inning while walking two and striking out two. The Cardinals allowed 11 runs on 12 hits while walking seven and striking out eight.
Yaxson Lucena went 3-for-4. Daniel Rojas was 2-for-4. Andru Arthur singled and was hit by a pitch. Yoerny Junco recorded the only other hit for the Cardinals. The Cardinals totaled no runs on seven hits with a walk and 15 strikeouts.
The DSL Cardinals are off Sundays.
