Cardinals Minor League Notebook – August 16, 2022

The St. Louis Cardinals’ rookie clubs went 1-2 on Monday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Javier Bolivar, blasted a game-winning home run for the FCL club. Other standouts include Jose Cordoba and Anyelo Encarnacion.

Memphis Redbirds – Off

The Triple-A Redbirds (58-52) are eight games behind Nashville in the International League East.

Springfield Cardinals – Off

The Double-A Cardinals (20-19) are five games behind first place Wichita in the Texas League North.

Peoria Chiefs – Off

The High-A Chiefs (18-24) are seven games out of first place in the Midwest League West.

Palm Beach Cardinals – Off

The Class-A Beach Birds (24-18) are tied for first with St. Lucie in the Florida State League East.

FCL Cardinals 1 at FCL Nationals 13 (Game 1, 7 innings)

The Florida Complex League Cardinals (21-26) were crushed by the Nationals (31-17) on Monday in Game 1 of the doubleheader.

Starter Benjamin Arias gave up five runs, four earned, on three hits and three walks in 1 1/3 innings. The right-hander struck out two and took his third loss of the season.

The only Cardinal run came in the third inning off the bat of Brandon Hernandez. The cleanup hitter singled to score Tre Fletcher.

Augusto Calderon surrendered five runs on four hits, two walks and four strikeouts in two innings. Americo Lugo tossed 2 2/3 innings and yielded three runs, one earned, after he fanned four.

Hernandez had the only hit for the Cardinals. The lineup went 1-for-5 with runners in scoring position.

Ryan Holgate and Won-Bin Cho each stole a bag.

Lizandro Espinoza committed two errors and Diego Velasquez had one.

FCL Cardinals 3 at FCL Nationals 2 (Game 2, 7 innings)

In a seven inning contest, the Florida Complex League Cardinals (22-26) edged the Nationals (31-18) after a late comeback at The Ballpark of the Palm Beaches.

In his debut, 2022 draftee Hunter Hayes surrendered two runs in the first inning. Also in his first outing, Chandler Arnold recorded a scoreless inning. Omar Sanchez recorded a scoreless two innings on one hit, a walk and a strikeout.

After the Cardinals were down 2-0 in the first, they scored all three runs in the seventh inning. Luis Pino singled to score Tre Fletcher. Down to their final out of the game, Javier Bolivar hit a go-ahead home run, his second professional homer.

The third and fourth pitchers to make their professional debuts on Monday, D.J. Carpenter and Tanner Jacobson each recorded a scoreless inning. Jacobson had two strikeouts and earned his first win. Edwin Nunez struck out two batters and saved his second game of the year after a scoreless seventh.

Jose Cordoba had the only multi-hit game with two. Bolivar recorded the game-winning home run. The lineup went 2-for-3 with runners in scoring position.

Fletcher and Pino both took a base.

The Cardinals are 8.5 games behind the first place Nationals in the Florida Complex League East.

DSL Cardinals 3, DSL Braves 4

The Dominican Summer League Cardinals (30-23) fell to the Braves (30-22) on Monday after the Braves scored the go-ahead run in the ninth inning.

Starter Darlin Saladin surrendered three runs, one earned, in 3 2/3 innings on four hits, three walks and four strikeouts.

After the Braves scored one in the third, the Cardinals responded in the home half. TCN’s no. 11 prospect, Jonathan Mejia, doubled to bring in Anyelo Encarnacion.

The Braves answered in the fourth with two and the Cardinals plated two in the bottom half. Carlos Carmona recorded an RBI single and Miguel Vargas came across on a wild pitch.

Samuel Fabian threw a scoreless 2 1/3 innings with one strikeout. Miguel Martinez was charged with the go-ahead run in the ninth and took his second loss of the season. The 19-year-old yielded two hits, one walk and six strikeouts.

Anyelo Encarnacion

Encarnacion had three of the eight Cardinal hits. Mejia had a hit, a walk and an RBI. The lineup went 3-for-10 with runners in scoring position.

Encarnacion stole his 11th bag of the season. Carmona had an outfield assist.

Mejia committed his 17th error of the year and Martinez recorded his second.

The Cardinals are 6.5 games behind the Rockies in the Dominican Summer League South.
