Cardinals Minor League Notebook – August 15, 2022

The St. Louis Cardinals system went 3-1 on Sunday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Memphis 1B Luken Baker, was a triple away from the cycle and had five RBI. Other standouts include Conner Capel, Chase Pinder, Mike Antico, Inohan Paniagua and Leonardo Bernal.

Memphis 11, Indianapolis 2

The Memphis Redbirds (58-52) crushed the Indianapolis Indians (PIT, 54-55) at AutoZone Park on Sunday. The Redbirds lineup had 14 hits and seven walks in the contest.

Thomas Parsons tossed 5 2/3 innings and was charged with two runs on four hits and three walks. The right-hander struck out five and earned his eighth win of the season.

After the Indians scored a run in the third, the Redbirds responded with four in the home half. Alec Burleson singled to drive in Scott Hurst. Moisés Gómez blasted his second home run in as many games. TCN’s no. 15 prospect now has an MiLB leading 32 home runs between Springfield and Memphis. Luken Baker drove in a run with a single to take a 4-1 lead.

James Naile recorded a scoreless 1 1/3 innings with two hits and one strikeout.

In the sixth, Conner Capel hit a solo home run, his 10th of the season. Kramer Robertson walked with the bases loaded. Baker doubled in the seventh to plate two runs. Capel recorded an RBI single and Baker hit a two-run home run in the eighth to make the score 11-2.

Ryan Loutos fanned two in the eighth inning and Zach McAllister pitched a perfect ninth.

Baker had three hits, five RBI and a run scored. Capel had three hits, one walk, two RBI and four runs scored. Hurst, Burleson and Gómez had two hits each. The lineup had seven extra-base hits in the contest.

Hurst stole a bag and was caught once. Gómez recorded an outfield assist.

After playing six innings in right field on Saturday, St. Louis rehabber Juan Yepez did not play on Sunday as had been planned.

After a 3-3 week, the Redbirds are eight games behind first place Nashville in the International League East.

Springfield 15 at Amarillo 11

The Springfield Cardinals (20-19) outslugged the Amarillo Sod Poodles (ARI, 19-20) on Sunday night at Hodgetown. The Cards’ lineup had 16 hits and six walks.

Starter Kyle Leahy gave up four runs, three earned, in five innings on six hits and three walks. The right-hander fanned six and earned his eighth win of 2022.

The Cardinals scored an impressive 10 runs in the first four innings. In the first, Matt Koperniak grounded out and scored Mike Antico. Antico hit a two-run homer in the second, his fifth for Springfield. Julio Rodriguez blasted his ninth home run of the year in the third, a three-run shot. Antico recorded an RBI double in the fourth. Chase Pinder homered for the 10th time this season to make it 10-3.

Griffin Roberts surrendered three runs in 1 2/3 innings on three hits and two strikeouts. John Beller was charged with a run in 1 1/3 innings with two strikeouts.

The Cardinals added five more runs in the sixth inning. Justin Toerner hit a solo shot, his fifth of the year. Pinder singled to score a run, his fourth of the game. Chandler Redmond hit a three-run homer, his 18th of the season.

Michael YaSenka closed out the ninth inning with three runs yielded on two hits, one walk and two strikeouts.

Mike Antico

Antico and Rodriguez each had three hits, three RBI and two runs scored. Pinder recorded two hits, two walks, three runs and four RBI. The lineup had four doubles and five home runs. In a very offense-heavy night, Jordan Walker was taken out of the game for a pinch runner after he reached on a fielders’ choice in the fourth inning.

Masyn Winn and Antico each took a base. Between High-A and Double-A, Winn has 33 and Antico has 56. Antico also recorded an outfield assist.

The Cardinals scored 59 runs after a 3-3 week in Amarillo. They are five games behind first place Wichita in the Texas League North.

Peoria 0 at Great Lakes 1 (10 innings)

The Peoria Chiefs (18-24) were blanked and walked off in the 10th inning by the Great Lakes Loons (LAD, 25-17) at Dow Diamond on Sunday.

TCN’s no. 19 prospect, Inohan Paniagua, tossed 6 1/3 scoreless innings with only one hit and one walk surrendered. The right-hander fanned seven batters. Nick Trogrilc-Iverson recorded a scoreless 2 2/3 innings with only one hit.

As the game was still tied at the end of the ninth, the game went into extra innings. In the 10th, Osvaldo Tovalin was placed on second and L.J. Jones walked. After Tyler Reichenborn put down a bunt to advance the runners, Mack Chambers and Aaron McKeithan both struck out.

Andre Granillo surrendered the only run of the game in the 10th after he gave up a single that scored the ghost runner. The right-hander took his third loss of the season.

Todd Lott, Jacob Buchberger, Ramon Mendoza and Noah Mendlinger all had a hit. The Peoria lineup struck out 11 times and left five runners on base.

The Chiefs won the first game of the set but then lost five straight to the Loons. They are seven games behind South Bend in the Midwest League West.

Palm Beach 7 at Bradenton 1

The Palm Beach Cardinals (24-18) topped the Bradenton Marauders (PIT, 27-15) on Sunday at LECOM Park.

Starter Trent Baker gave up one run in four innings on three hits, five walks and six strikeouts.

In the first, Alex ladisernia grounded out and scored Victor Scott II to take an early 1-0 lead. The Marauders answered with a run in the home half but the Leonardo Bernal blasted a solo shot in the second. The catcher also hit a solo homer in the fourth inning. Scott II came across in the fifth as Thomas Francisco grounded into a double play.

Gustavo J. Rodriguez

Gustavo Rodriguez recorded four scoreless innings and yielded four hits. The right-hander fanned four and earned his second win of the season. Andrew Marrero tossed a perfect ninth inning with two strikeouts.

The Cardinals added three runs in the seventh inning. Darlin Moquete hit a two-run home run, his eighth of the year. R.J. Yeager plated Scott II via sacrifice fly.

Leonardo Bernal

Bernal went 4-for-4 with two solo home runs and three runs scored. Moquete had two hits and Scott II came across three times. The two combined for six of the nine Cardinals hits. Francisco had four of the seven walks. The lineup grounded into four double plays.

The Beach Birds went 2-4 in Bradenton this week. They are tied for first with St. Lucie in the Florida State League East.
