Cardinals Minor League Notebook – August 14, 2022

The St. Louis Cardinals system went 2-4 on Saturday, again with the rookie squads winning. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, no. 1 prospect Jordan Walker, had two hits, a walk, a stolen base, an outfield assist, an RBI and a run. Other standouts include Alex ladisernia and Enrique Saldana.

Memphis 1, Indianapolis 6

The Memphis Redbirds (57-52) fell to the Indianapolis Indians (PIT, 54-54) at AutoZone Park on Saturday night. The Redbirds lineup only had four hits in the contest.

Matthew Liberatore gave up all six runs on nine hits and two walks in 5 2/3 innings. The left-hander struck out two and took his fifth loss of the season. Johan Quezada tossed a scoreless 1 1/3 innings with two strikeouts.

The only Redbird run came off the bat of Moisés Gómez in the eighth inning. The outfielder hit a solo shot, his MiLB leading 31st of the year between Double-A and Triple-A.

Kodi Whitley threw a scoreless eighth inning and Junior Fernández recorded a scoreless ninth.

Conner Capel, Alec Burleson, Cory Spangenberg and Gómez each had one hit. In his rehab, Juan Yepez started in right field and went 0-for-2. The lineup did not have a runner in scoring position and left three runners on base.

Iván Herrera and Capel both committed an error.

Springfield 3 at Amarillo 5

The Springfield Cardinals (19-19) were defeated by the Amarillo Sod Poodles (ARI, 19-19) on Saturday at Hodgetown.

TCN’s no. 5 prospect, Gordon Graceffo, threw 4 1/3 innings and surrendered one run. The right-hander yielded four hits, two walks and two strikeouts.

The Cardinals put up a run in the first inning as Jordan Walker singled to score Mike Antico. The Sod Poodles responded with a run in the home half but the Cardinals answered back in the second. Irving Lopez plated Nick Raposo with a single. In the fifth, Justin Toerner doubled to bring across Walker.

In his Springfield debut, Gianluca Dalatri was charged with two solo home runs in 2 2/3 innings. Dalton Roach took his seventh loss of the season after he gave up two runs in one inning.

Antico, Walker and Raposo had two hits apiece. Even with 10 hits and five walks, the lineup went 3-for-13 with runners in scoring position.

Walker stole his 17th bag of 2022. He also recorded an outfield assist in right field.

Sunday’s game: at Amarillo, RHP Kyle Leahy (7-7, 6.11) vs. RHP Bryce Jarvis (2-3, 7.49) 6:05 CT

Peoria 0 at Great Lakes 6

The Peoria Chiefs (18-23) were blanked by the Great Lakes Loons (LAD, 24-17) on Saturday night at Dow Diamond for their fourth consecutive loss.

Dionys Rodriguez tossed five innings and surrendered four runs on six hits and one walk. The 21-year-old fanned eight batters but took his 11th loss of the year.

Chris Gerard struck out four in two innings but was charged with two runs. Nathanael Heredia recorded a scoreless eighth inning.

The Chiefs had five hits and three walks in the contest. Mack Chambers had a hit and two walks. Tyler Reichenborn had the only extra-base hit, a double in the second inning. The lineup went 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position.

Sunday’s game: at Great Lakes, RHP Inohan Paniagua (1-1, 4.70) vs. RHP Emmett Sheehan (6-2, 3.14) 12:05 CT

Palm Beach 5 at Bradenton 7

The Palm Beach Cardinals (23-18) lost to the Bradenton Marauders (PIT, 27-14) at LECOM Park on Saturday.

Starter Jose Davila surrendered three runs, two earned, on four hits, four walks and three strikeouts in four innings.

In the second, Alex ladisernia singled to score a run but the Marauders responded in the bottom half. Thomas Francisco blasted a solo home run in the fifth, his fourth for Palm Beach. In the sixth, ladisernia and Darlin Moquete each brought a run across to take a 4-3 lead.

Bryan Pope yielded three runs, one earned, in 2 2/3 innings. The right-hander struck out four and took his second loss of the year. In his second professional appearance, 2022 15th-rounder Matt Hickey gave up a hit and struck out one. Nelfri Contreras was charged with a run in the eighth inning.

R.J. Yeager and ladisernia each had two hits. Yeager came across twice and ladisernia had two RBI. Victor Scott II and Francisco both had two hits. The Beach Birds went 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position.

Sunday’s game: at Bradenton, RHP Trent Baker (7-7, 3.38) vs. RHP Po-Yu Chen (3-6, 4.63) 11:00 CT

FCL Cardinals 4 at FCL Mets 2

The Florida Complex League Cardinals (21-25) topped the Mets (28-20) at St. Lucie Sports Complex on Saturday.

Alec Willis pitched a scoreless three innings with only one hit given up and two strikeouts. Enrique Saldana earned his third win of the season after a scoreless four innings with four strikeouts.

Samil De La Rosa scored the first run in the fourth inning via sacrifice fly. Won-Bin Cho and Joshua Baez came across on an error in the sixth. Felix Taveras doubled to plate De La Rosa.

Randel Clemente surrendered the only two Mets runs, both unearned. Edwin Nunez saved the first game of his professional career after a hitless ninth inning.

Cho and Brandon Hernandez each had a hit and a walk. Francis Reynoso fanned in all three at-bats and every starter other than Hernandez was punched out at least once. As a team, the Cardinals struck out 15 times and committed five errors but still found a way to win.

Carlos Linarez and Hernandez both stole a bag.

Lizandro Espinoza, Adari Grant, Hernandez, Saldana and De La Rosa all committed an error.

The Cardinals are 8.5 games behind the Nationals in the FCL East.

DSL Cardinals 5 at DSL Tigers2 2 (7 innings)

The Dominican Summer League Cardinals (30-22) beat the Tigers 2 (25-23) in a seven-inning contest on Saturday morning.

Starter Leonel Sequera threw a scoreless three innings with two walks and five strikeouts. Ronny Oliver gave up two runs, one earned, in two innings. The 18-year-old earned his third win of the season.

In the second inning, Yaisel Ramos stole home to take a 1-0 lead. Yancel Guerrero singled to score Arfeni Batista. Jose Suarez doubled in the fourth to plate Guerrero. In the fifth, Marcelo Perez drove in one run with a double and another came across due to a throwing error.

Omar Yanez saved his third game of the year after a scoreless two innings with two strikeouts.

The Cardinals had five hits and six walks. Batista came across twice and Guerrero had a hit, a walk, an RBI and a run scored. The lineup went 3-for-14 with runners in scoring position.

Batista and Guerrero both took a base. Ramos stole two. Keshawn Rombley recorded an outfield assist.

The Cardinals are 5.5 games behind the Rockies in the DSL South.
