Cardinals Minor League Notebook – August 11, 2022

The St. Louis Cardinals system was 1-2 on Wednesday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, 1B Chandler Redmond, had a historic night, going 5-for-6 with solo, two-run, three-run home runs and a grand slam for 11 RBI in Springfield’s blowout win. Other standouts include teammates Masyn Winn, Matt Koperniak and Jordan Walker.

Memphis vs. Indianapolis (postponed)

The game between the Memphis Redbirds and Indianapolis Indians at AutoZone Park was postponed due to rain. The game will be made up on Thursday, August 11 as part of a doubleheader.

Springfield 21 at Amarillo 4

The Springfield Cardinals blew away the Sod Poodles by a 21-4 score on Wednesday night. Pressed into action when scheduled starter Connor Lunn was placed on the injured list, Domingo Robles pitched five innings. The left-hander gave up four runs on five hits, struck out three and walked one to earn his third win of the season.

Michael Brettell relieved Robles and threw two scoreless innings. Griffin Roberts tossed the final two scoreless innings.

The Cardinals posted three runs in the first inning to take the lead. Nick Dunn singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Jordan Walker singled to score Dunn. Matt Koperniak walked. Nick Raposo plated Walker on a single. Koperniak scored on a Chandler Redmond single.

The lead increased to 4-0 in the second on an RBI double by Masyn Winn. Amarillo scored three runs in the third to cut the lead to 4-3.

Springfield added two runs in the fifth on a Redmond long ball. In the bottom of the fifth the Sod Poodles scored their fourth and final run of the game.

From the fifth on, the Cardinals poured it on. They scored five runs in each of the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings. In the sixth it was an RBI single by Koperniak and a grand slam from Redmond.

In the seventh, Walker hit a two-run blast and Koperniak, Redmond, and Justin Toerner thumped solo home runs. A two-run homer by Winn and a three-run blast from Redmond in the eighth plated the final five runs.

Redmond finished the game with a new team record 11 RBI, while going 5-for-6 with four home runs (another record) – a solo, two-run, three-run and grand slam.

According to the Cardinals, Redmond is just the second player in the history of professional baseball to complete a home run cycle.

Winn was 3-for-6 with three RBI and three runs scored. Walker did the same. Koperniak was 3-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored. Raposo was 2-for-6 with an RBI. Toerner was 3-for-5 with an RBI. The offense in total hit eight home runs and scored 21, both of which are franchise records.

On the base paths, Mike Antico stole his 18th base of the season. Toerner swiped his eighth. Koperniak was caught stealing. Antico was picked off first base.

Springfield is 19-16 in the second half and is in second place in the Texas League North, 2 games back of first place Wichita.

Thursday’s game:  at Amarillo, RHP Edgar Escobar (7-7, 6.65) vs. Blake Walston LHP (3-3, 6.38) 7:05 CT.

Peoria 2 at Great Lakes 3 (10 innings)

The Peoria Chiefs were edged by the Loons in an extra inning contest on Wednesday night. Starter Wilfredo Pereira pitched 5 2/3 innings, gave up one run on five hits, fanned seven and walked one.

Reliever Nathanael Heredia surrendered one run in 1 2/3 innings. Andre Granillo allowed one unearned run in 1 2/3 innings. Granillo took the loss, his second.

Great Lakes took a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Peoria answered with two runs in the fourth to take the lead. L.J. Jones hit a solo home run. Francisco Hernandez singled and stole second base. Luis Rodriguez reached on an error and Francisco Hernandez scored.

The score remained 2-1 until the eighth when the Loons tied it up. The game went into the 10th. The Chiefs failed to score in the top of the inning, but Great Lakes pushed a run across in the home half of the 10th to walk it off.

Todd Lott and Osvaldo Tovalin were both 2-for-5. Jones had the only RBI.

On the base paths, Hernandez stole his 16th base of the season. Tommy Jew swiped his 23rd bag. Lott stole his fourth. Mack Chambers was picked off first base.

In the field, Tovalin made a throwing error.

Peoria is 18-20 in the second half and is in fifth place in the Midwest League West, six games back of first place South Bend.

Thursday’s game:  at Great Lakes, RHP Zane Mills (3-7, 4.38) vs. Nick Nastrini RHP (4-3, 4.15) 6:05 CT.

Palm Beach 3 at Bradenton 4 (10 innings)

The Palm Beach Cardinals were edged by the Marauders in an extra innings contest on Wednesday afternoon. Starter Tink Hence pitched three innings, gave up one run on three hits and fanned five.

Bryan Pope relieved Hence and threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings. Roy Garcia surrendered two runs in 1 2/3 innings. Gustave Rodriguez hurled 1 2/3 scoreless innings. Matt Hickey tossed a scoreless inning. Andrew Marrero relinquished the winning unearned run in the 10th and took the loss.

Bradenton scored the first run of the game in the third. Palm Beach took a 3-1 lead in the fifth. Brody Moore singled, and Leonardo Bernal followed with a double that scored Moore. Bernal scored on a sac fly by Darlin Moquete. Chris Rotondo singled, Nathan Church reached on a throwing error and Rotondo scored.

The Marauders tied it at 3-3 in the seventh. The game went into the 10th and Bradenton scored in the home half of the inning on a walk off sac fly.

Bernal went 3-for-4 with an RBI and was the only Cardinal with multiple hits.

In the field, Hence picked a runner off first base.

Palm Beach is 23-15 in the second half and is in first place in the FSL East.

Thursday’s game:  at Bradenton, Alfredo Ruiz LHP (3-0, 2.45) vs. Luis Peralta LHP (0-5, 6.64) 5:30 CT.

FCL Cardinals – Off

The Florida Complex League Cardinals (19-24) are in fifth place in the six-team FCL East, 8 ½ games out of first place.

Thursday’s game:  vs. FCL Marlins, TBA vs. TBA 11:00 am CT

DSL Cardinals – Off

The Dominican Summer League Cardinals (28-21) are in fourth place in the nine-team DSL South Division, 4 ½ games out of first.
