Cardinals Minor League Notebook – August 10, 2025

The St. Louis Cardinals minor league system was 1-3 on Saturday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Springfield’s Cade Winquest, threw 6 ⅓ innings of two-run ball for his second win and first quality start at Double-A. Other standouts include Jimmy Crooks, Darlin Moquete, Jeremy Rivas, Jose Davila and Yaxson Lucena.

Memphis Redbirds 2, Durham Bulls 6

The Triple-A Memphis Redbirds fell to the Durham Bulls at AutoZone Park on Saturday.

Ian Bedell made his first start for Memphis since his activation from the injured list on Wednesday. The right-hander pitched three innings and allowed one run on three hits, one walk, and two strikeouts.

Left-hander Anthony Veneziano threw a scoreless fourth inning in his organizational debut. Alex Cornwell fanned two and yielded a run across two innings. Nick Raquet surrendered a run in the seventh inning, taking the loss. Skylar Hales surrendered three runs in the eighth as the Bulls pulled away. Gerson Moreno tossed a scoreless ninth.

Durham scored the first run of the game in the initial inning.

Memphis took the lead with a pair of runs in the third. Mike Antico singled and moved to second on a JJ Wetherholt groundout. José Fermín walked. Nathan Church blooped a single to score Antico.

Jimmy Crooks followed with a sharp single to bring Fermín home and put Memphis in front 2-1.

The Bulls answered with single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to regain the lead and added three insurance runs in the eighth to extend their lead to 6-2.

The Redbirds loaded the bases in the eighth on consecutive singles from Church, Crooks and Matt Koperniak. All three were left on base, however.

The Redbirds scored two runs on eight hits. Crooks was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Church singled twice and drove in a run. Matt Lloyd recorded the lone Memphis extra-base hit, a double. The lineup left 10 runners on base.

The Redbirds did not record a stolen base.

On defense, third baseman Wetherholt made a throwing error. Pitcher Cornwell picked a runner off second base.

Memphis is 59-52 overall, and 18-20 in the second half. They will look to secure a series split on Sunday.

Sunday’s game: vs. Durham, RHP Aaron Wilkerson (5-2, 3.70) vs. TBA. 1:05 PM CT.

Springfield Cardinals 6 at San Antonio Missions 2

The Double-A Springfield Cardinals bested the Missions in San Antonio on Saturday.

Cade Winquest made his fourth start for Springfield. The right-hander pitched 6 ⅓ innings and allowed two runs on four hits, one walk and four strikeouts. Winquest earned his second Double-A win and holds a 2.08 ERA with Springfield.

Left-hander Michael Watson fired 1 ⅔ scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts. Austin Love fanned two in a scoreless ninth inning.

The Missions took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning.

The Cardinals answered with a four-run fifth. Miguel Ugeuto and Brody Moore hit back-to-back singles. Darlin Moquete scorched his first triple of the season to bring both runners home.

Chase Davis followed with a single to plate Davis. Jeremy Rivas lined the fourth single of the inning. Dakota Harris flied into a sacrifice double play, with Davis home to extend the lead to 4-1.

The Cardinals added a pair of runs in the seventh. Moquete reached on a throwing error by the pitcher. Chase Davis doubled to put two runners in scoring position. Rivas connected for his second hit of the game to score both runners and stretch the lead to 6-1.

 Springfield’s Love stranded two San Antonio runners on base in the bottom of the ninth to secure the win.

The Cardinals scored six runs on 11 hits. Davis was 2-for-4, including a double, two runs scored, and an RBI. Moquete was 2-for-4 including a triple, two runs, and two RBI. Rivas singled twice and drove in two. Harris singled and drove in a run.

It was a rough night on the bases for the Cardinals as Moquete, Graysen Tarlow, and Joshua Baez were all caught stealing second base. Tarlow was also picked off first base.

Defensively, third baseman Harris committed a fielding error.

Springfield is 68-39 overall, and 25-13 in the second half. They will look to take five of six from San Antonio on Sunday.

Peoria Chiefs 3, Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 4

The High-A Peoria Chiefs dropped a tight contest to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers at Dozer Park on Saturday.

Frank Elissalt made his first start in the organization, and second appearance with the Chiefs. The right-hander pitched 3 ⅔ innings and allowed four runs on two hits, three walks and one strikeout. Elissalt took the loss.

Fresh off the injured list, D.J. Carpenter secured the final out of the fourth inning without a run allowed. Jose Davila made his first relief appearance of 2025 and fired five shutout innings on just three hits with seven strikeouts.

Wisconsin took a 1-0 lead in the first inning.

Peoria tied the game in the home third. Anyelo Encarnacion and Won-Bin Cho walked. Encarnacion advanced to third on a Jon Jon Gazdar flyout. The Chiefs executed a double steal, with Cho swiping second base, and Encarnacion taking home to tie the game at one apiece.

The Timber Rattlers answered with a three-run fourth.

The Chiefs narrowed the gap to one with a pair of runs in the sixth. Zach Levenson singled and Jesus Baez walked. Levenson came around to score on a throwing error from the catcher on a pickoff attempt to move the Chiefs closer at 4-2.

Travis Honeyman dropped a single to move Baez to third base. Ryan Campos drove in Baez on his 20th double of the season to move Peoria within a run at 4-3. Following a Josh Kross walk, back-to-back strikeouts cut the Chiefs’ rally short.

Peoria left the bases loaded in the eighth and the tying run at second base in the ninth in the close loss.

The Chiefs scored three runs on just three hits. Campos walked twice, doubled, and drove in a run. Levenson singled and scored a run. Honeyman singled. The lineup drew 10 walks but went 2-for-16 with runners in scoring position and stranded 11 runners.

On the basepaths, Cho swiped two bags to increase his season total to 15. Encarnacion stole home for his third steal of the year.

On defense, third baseman Baez made a throwing error.

Peoria is 43-63 overall, and 17-24 in the second half. They will look to split the series on Sunday.

Sunday’s game: vs. Wisconsin, RHP Nate Dohm (3-5, 2.88) vs. RHP Travis Smith (4-4, 3.26) 2:05 PM CT.

Palm Beach Cardinals at Dunedin Blue Jays (game one, suspended)

The Low-A Palm Beach Cardinals’ first game of their road doubleheader with the Dunedin Blue Jays was suspended on Saturday due to inclement weather. The game will resume in the top of the third inning on Sunday as the opener of a doubleheader.

Action will resume as Palm Beach holds a 2-0 lead from solo home runs by Rainiel Rodriguez and Jonathan Mejia in the first inning. In his professional debut, Ty Van Dyke threw two perfect innings with three strikeouts.

Palm Beach Cardinals at Dunedin Blue Jays (game two, canceled)

The second game of Saturday’s doubleheader between Palm Beach and Dunedin was canceled due to inclement weather. It will not be made up as the two teams do not play for the rest of the season after Sunday.

With two wins on Sunday, Palm Beach would take four of five from Dunedin.

Palm Beach is 51-53 overall, and 19-20 in the second half.

Sunday’s games: at Dunedin. Saturday’s suspended game is slated to resume in the third inning at 11:00 AM CT. The regularly scheduled game will follow. Palm Beach pitchers are expected to be RH Nelfy Ynfante (3-5, 5.81) and TBA.

DSL Cardinals 5 at DSL Nationals 8 (7 innings)

The Dominican Summer League Cardinals lost a close seven-inning contest to the DSL Nationals on Saturday.

Daniel Gomez started for the Cardinals. The right-hander tossed three innings and allowed six runs, five earned, on eight hits, one walk, and no strikeouts. Gomez took the loss.

Kriscol Peralta surrendered two runs in the fourth inning. Earle Zulueta tossed the remaining two innings, keeping the Nationals from scoring further.

The Nationals took a commanding 8-0 lead via a run in the fourth and a big seven-run fifth inning.

The Cardinals dented the large gap with a three-run sixth inning. Kenly Hunter legged out an infield single and moved to third on two consecutive wild pitches. Juan Rujano was hit by a pitch. Hunter came home on the third wild pitch of the inning. Rujano scored on Yaxson Lucena’s third home run of the season, a two-run shot, to move the Cardinals to 8-3.

Down to their final three outs in the shortened contest, the Cardinals could only score twice. Michael Cordero drew a walk and advanced on a wild pitch and groundout. Yeferson Portolatin reached base on a fielding error, with Cordero home. Hunter lined a double to bring Portolatin home and move the Cardinals within three at 8-5.

The DSL Cardinals scored five runs on five hits. Lucena was 3-for-3, including a home run and two RBI. Hunter was 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored, and an RBI. Cordero walked twice and scored a run.

On the bases, Lucena swiped his third base of the season.

On defense, third baseman Cordero and catcher Chaparro each made a throwing error.

The DSL Cardinals are 26-23 on the season. They are tied for second place in the DSL Southeast Division, six games out of first place. The Cardinals are off Sunday and will play a road contest with the DSL Cubs Blue on Monday.

Monday’s game: at DSL Cubs Blue. Pitching probables have not yet been announced. First pitch is scheduled for 10:00 AM CT.
