Cardinals Minor League Notebook – April 6, 2022

The St. Louis Cardinals system went 1-0 on Tuesday, Opening Day for Memphis. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day is left fielder Alec Burleson, who had a home run and an outfield assist.

Memphis 2, Gwinnett 1

In the first game of the Triple-A Redbirds’ 2022 season, Memphis edged the Gwinnett Stripers by the score of 2-1 at AutoZone Park on Tuesday night. T.J. Zeuch got the Opening Day start for Memphis and the right hander pitched 4 1/3 innings. He gave up one run on five hits, fanned eight and walked two.

James Naile relieved Zeuch and tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings. Junior Fernandez followed with 1 1/3 scoreless innings to collect the win. Kyle Ryan and Jacob Bosiokovic combined for the final 1 2/3 scoreless innings. Bosiokovic earned the first save of 2022.

Gwinnett scored first on a solo home run off Zeuch in the third inning. The Redbirds tied the game in the fifth when Corey Spangenberg singled, stole second base, and came home on a single by Kramer Robertson.

Alec Burleson

Memphis took the lead in the seventh on a solo home run to left center field by Alec Burleson, The Cardinal Nation’s no. 14 prospect. The Redbirds offense had six hits, with Spangenberg’s 2-for 3 the only Memphis player with multiple hits.

Robertson and Spangenberg each had a stolen base. Robertson was picked off first base. In the field, Burleson had an outfield assist at second base, and Connor Capel had an outfield assist at home.

Wednesday’s game:  vs. Gwinnett, Matthew Liberatore (Mem, 0-0, 0.00) vs. Touki Touissant (0-0, 0.00) 12:05 CT.
