Cardinals Minor League Notebook – April 3, 2023

The St. Louis Cardinals system was 0-1 on Sunday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Iván Herrera, doubled and homered in Memphis’ second consecutive one-run, late-inning loss.

Memphis 5 at Charlotte 6

The Memphis Redbirds (1-2) fell to the Charlotte Knights (CWS, 2-1) on Sunday afternoon at Truist Field. It was the Redbirds’ second consecutive one-run loss in the late innings.

Starter Connor Thomas tossed 4 1/3 innings and surrendered five runs on eight hits and one walk. TCN’s no. 19 prospect struck out four.

The Redbirds got on the board early with four runs in the first two innings. In the first, Iván Herrera recorded an RBI double and Luken Baker singled in a run. Chase Pinder added a two-run home run in the second.

Memphis tied the game in the sixth after Herrera blasted a solo shot, his first of the season.

Kyle Leahy took the loss after he gave up a run on a wild pitch in the eighth inning. The right-hander pitched well overall, yielding only one hit and fanning four batters in 3 2/3 innings.

Baker and Herrera both had a multi-hit day. Herrera drove in two runs and came across twice. The lineup struck out 10 times and went 2-for-7 with runners in scoring position.

Scott Hurst stole his third bag of the season.

Memphis went 1-2 in Charlotte this weekend. Their home opener is Tuesday at AutoZone Park.
